this remided me of another good point; most schools give a student:computer ratio..
my school's ratio was 1:10(one of the top 10 more wired campus' according to yahoo.)
it should be noted that the people who did the study were hired by the school and complete scum. they counted ever gvsu OWNED computer, including professors office computers, secretaries, the scrap heap in IT.... if it could 'turn on,' it counted. Check and see how easy it is to get a computer in the main lab around lunchtime during midterms. THAT'LL be a good way to find out.
this should make your choice up, but it should give you an Idea how full of shit the schools salesmen are.
this is actually a good point. my school, had flaunted a 7:1 girl to guy ratio(one of the reasons I chose it:)....
however it should be noted, while we have one of the best known nursing schools in the US, our CS PROGRAM SUCKS. 2 or 3 good professors, the rest are hacks(not in a good way).
it should also be noted that the 7:1 ratio doesn't apply to CS.... here it's a 1:10 ratio the other way:(
my school's(gvsu) professors openly admit that they do not follow the guidelines and that the classes names misleading.
your best be would be gather up a handful of seniors and ask THEM specific questions. not the honor students either, the guys in the back of the room. ask them, what do you think of Professor so-and-so? is this class about artificial intelligence REALLY ABOUT artificial intelligence? is it the depth you were hoping for?
NEVER EVER EVER EVER E V E R believe/listen to the school. I'd trust satan himself over a college recruiter.
do you have to ask? I can think of 1billion + reasons, and ALOT of them are kids.
fact 1: shovel your software on the youngsters, they chose it when they go into the real world. look at what colleges have done over the past 20 years with *nix.
fact 2: there are alot of people in china.
fact 3:if, say, 1/4 of the population is children(low estimate, I know), and they're being exposed to this software, well, that's 1,000,000,000/4= 250,000,000 kids growing up on something that will basically cost sun little more than opening up an FTP server for them...
and we all know how asia in general has a knack for making copied CD's:)
heck, I can't even get ups to deliver a freakin DSL modem without a hassle- I REALLY feel sorry for anyone who tries to ship valuables these days-
best advice: get yourself a bigass u-haul and a troupe of acrobatic midgets. Have them ride in the back of the truck... when you hit a corner and it starts to tip, the midgets can climb up on each other and hold it in place. problem solved! (warning: make sure your midgets are strong.)
no, it was actually gonna work to MS's favor- when the stripped down version hung, they'd have their infinite preparation time! :) (laugh, it's funny.)
all of those people who'll have 300 to spend will have an Iron-clad way to dupe people out of money- maybe I should start my own "non-accredited professional tutoring service"?
it'll be just like a business card- just because you have one, doesn't mean your legit. anyone here ever see bordello of blood?:) dennis miller was a private eye with a business card... ONE business card.
that's what you'll see- a modular windows- the "core" part that's little more than win3.1 and you'll be able to add on the extra(THEMES) which will include all the games. they'll both come on the CD, and you'll only have those 2 options. no half way. if you want solitare, you have to take the rest of the middlewear.
well, the less there is, the less it'll crash- I have 0% microsoft OS on my webserver, and it never crashes:)
oh I had another thought- James bach really shot himself in the foot. he spent all that time learning XP inside and out and now microsoft will NEVER hire him:)
I gotta agree-chuck one of those puppies somewhere that'll get warm... hmmm. maybe the air intake of someones engine... you could be a real party-pooper at a camp fire. anyplace that gets warm and depends on an open flame.... I guess the pilot light on a furnace would count, wouldn't it?
sad part is the first thing that came to my mind was this sentence....
"ok, so he's using a fire based pokemon- ...I know what to use."
while I'm not john mayer, I feel obligated yet again to mention his motto- "you can burn a CD, but you can't burn a t-shirt"
decent people like him who are in touch with the technology will thrive in the next 10 years... I'd be happy if every major label went bankrupt and all the indie's took over.
rock on wilco- I didn't see that post earlier, but I'll check them out tomorrow.
my next thought is how close their upgrade utility is to apt-get or rpm- does anyone know of a good place to get distro comparisons? I'd really like to see the strengths and weaknesses of this vs. redhat and debian.
depending on if I can find the ISO's, I'll give it a try when I fully convert my system over from win2k.
I tried SuSe before, and it was really cool, but it's gonna have a hardtime beating debian as my desktop OS of choice.
it's determinate on whether or not they have the ISO's available... if they don't, they're losing out on me as a user. probably alot of others as well.
and yes, I do plan on buying the distro I decide on.
my favorite is when artists who support the stuff START gettting big because they're doing it.
John Mayer is this posterboy of this phenomenon. he started off locally and posting mp3s on mp3.com, and the next thing he knows, he's on conan obrien, leno, vh1 mtv, etc... check him out if you get a chance. his 2 cds are the only one's I've bought in the last 4 years- I mainly listen to hippie music from the 60's and blues.
that's why I fill out my info so the companies who do put it together get:
Sensitive private characteristics: Sexual Preference: beastiality, necrophelia Medical History: sheds whole nails every 6 weeks, gastrointestinal inflamation Crinimal record: indecent exposure(old folks home), defecation on public highway, urination from tall buildings(3 counts)
Yeah, those are pretty private
Non-sensitive private information: Buying habits: yani CD's, thighmasters, books on.NET Web browsing habits:/., any pr0n, vegatablemating.com
granted this is NOT what I'm like, but if they ask, I'm more than obliged to tell them this sorta stuff. like when the jahova's wittnesses knock on my door, and ask me if I have found jesus yet, and I tell them "yeah I locked him in the basment last week." they usually go away then. hollings is trying to win you over. don't fall for it. I'm half tempted to move to his district just to vote against him.
somehow I don't think they'll let you bring BFG's on board- the security guards I saw didn't exactly seem like they would be able to comprehend the difference:)
I'd rather see the load being taken off the power supply. I mean, graphics are nice, but as Michael alludes to, it's gonna take a friggin nuclear power plant to supply the juice- I'd rather see the hardware focusing on lower power consumption. you know, perfect what they got before moving to the next step. Now that I live off campus, I see how much juice my machines run, and well, 300watt powersupplies suck for electric bills.
so yeah, I'm disenfranchised with the the entire college situation. yea, I meant disillusioned- good call.
as for the accents, I have foreign friends, but the problem being that I am already having a difficult time with the material already, orjust don't understand them
and when it comes to professors, tell that to the Java 162 class I graded for. the prof knew nothing about java(or how to teach for that matter) and just confused the hell out of the kids- especially when he contradicted the book(which was a bad book in my opinion in the first place). When you use method and class interchangably, yeah, you have problems:)
any company who can't find the "time, money or brains" to convert ASP to php as never fully reaped the benefits of "the Intern."
I've worked for two companies converting Access Databases to SQLserver databases and writing webpage frontends- while this doesn't directly apply to the topic, it should be mentioned that they were paying me $8/hour, and it woulda cost ALOT MORE for a pro to come in and do it.
I write php in my spare time on my website, and if I ever get the chance, I'll reccomend php all the way because I personally find it easier, quicker, and more intuitive than ASP. that's my opinion tho, and I know someone will disagree with me.

(one discontented student)
porn. lots of porn.
what else would they be looking at? I know that's what I'd be doing.
I feel even more violated about this that I do about face recognition.
do you have to ask?

wildfire, my friend...that's what it'll be.
...paying for MY cable- so I owe it to AOL/TW to watch their commercials?
I think not.
They can get in that long line of people who are full of crap and can blow me.
I guess they can just lose a customer over this.
/. is more entertaining anyways.

for using phpTriad last year.
I swear, I just can't get it right. I must be a visionary or something.
and I agree with alot of the people here- I had a heck of a time trying to configure sql server 2k- I'm guessing IIS configures much the same way.
I'll take a config file over that mess any day.

um, perhaps you didn't understand the first time... try this...
I'll take hard for $0 Alex...
:)
