  1. Lubuntu on GNOME 3: Beauty To the Bone? · · Score: 1

I know - yet another proposal to use a different Linux Distro but I am very happy with lubuntu (http://lubuntu.net/) which has a very clean look and just works.

On a side note: what still puzzles me is - for 15 years I've tried to explain the desktop metaphor to non-technical people among friends and family and now that we 24"+ screens and it starts to make sense, we move back to the single application paradigm...

  2. Re:Games on Why Linux Is Not Yet Ready For the Desktop · · Score: 1

Having installed Ubuntu 9.04 on various machines in my family (my mom's not exactly a power user), I can't really follow your argumentation. Nor the agitation.

    A) No. Installing Ubuntu is easy. A proper dual-boot setup takes some experience - especially if you use Firefox/Thunderbird profiles etc from both OSs.
    B) There is a problem with USB WiFi adapters but everything else worked out of the box. If you want to use the latest and greatest HW, stick to Windows.
    C) It is a matter of use cases: my experience is that Linux is good enough. And yes, if you must use program X which only runs under Windows, well, then stick to Windows.
    D) Yes, mainstream games suck on Linux. Get a console - PC gaming is dying anyway.

So again, if you have special requirements (hardware, software), stick to Windows, otherwise I found that Linux (Ubuntu in this case) is good enough for the average desktop user (judging from the small sample that I support in my spare time).

Oh, and keep your karma. You may need it when Windows 7 is out ;-)

As other posters have pointed out, come back in three years. He will be interested in what you are doing anyway and learn quickly when he's ready - but for now he needs to learn tons of other stuff.

    That's simply not true.

I use this feature since 1.0.2 and it works fine. It's not enabled by default (all accounts use the smtp server of the first account you enter) but then again it's not too hard to find (Properties > Outgoing Server > Advanced).

  6. Free as in speech on Linux Beer Hike Goes to Ireland · · Score: 1

You may have a look at the source - i.e. the boiler, pipes etc, if you ask at the local brewery :)

But since the Irish beer is of excellent quality there is no need to debug it anyway.

And furthermore who wants to add features to beer??

You could add the suppression of religious freedom (Falun-Gon) and the occupation of Tibet as further marks of an authoritarian state.
Yes, China has a long record of violations of human rights, but it's not a fascist state.

When everybody's talking about black or white, it's important to remember that there is a lot of grey in between.

  8. Insightful? on CIA Warns China Might Be Planning Cyber Attack · · Score: 1

It's very disturbing to see such an unqualified comment modded to "insightful".

Chinese culture and politics are different and difficult to understand - agreed. But that's true for the USA from the european perspective as well. Sometimes.

Ok, just put them on axis of evil list and switch the status flag to "enemy". I don't think that politics is binary-coded.

  9. that's what they try to hide on Xbox Price Drops For Australia And Europe · · Score: 1

You're right, but by lowering prices for the XBox, they lure people to a new platform - once it's established they start cashing in on the games.
Compare to pirated Windows copies that helped to establish the platform for MS Office.

  10. /.'s responsibility on Modeling Linking on the Web · · Score: 1

IMO it is the responsibility of news sites to pick up the less known projects and present them to a wider audience.
That's why I like the stories on small innovative projects best. The fact, that a new Apache release is out, will reach you anyway.

Although user contributions adhere the same critical mass principle, good editing can counter the effect and thus provide news, that you won't find everywhere else. I hope, Slashdot will be able to keep its quality...
