  7. Chicken Processing plant on The Absolute Worst Working Environment? · · Score: 1

A few years ago, the consulting company I was working for had me traveling. A big chemical company was upgrading their servers and workstations.

All went well until we arrived to one of their plants in North Carolina. The plant itself was fine. It was the Chicken processing plant next to the chemical plant that was the problem. Image the smell of chicken fat fermenting in an open vat... for a day or two.

Occasionally, we would see a semi-truck with a trailer. You know: the trailer has four sides, an open top and it typically used to haul coal or dirt. Now, instead of hauling coal or dirt, it hauls a slimy chicken goo which is in some sort of liquid form. And to top it all off, the driver likes to take corners a little too fast so that the chicken goo splashes over the edge and splatters on the ground. (We kept our windows rolled up whenever we drove in/out of this place... just to be safe).

On the plus side, it was December when I was there. The chicken goo had to ferment several days in order to get that throat-gagging smell. Imagine being there on a hot, steamy and overly sunny July or August day.

I was at a Groupwise seminar a little while back. The presenter stated that Exchange has 75 Million users while Groupwise has around 30-35 million. So it only makes sense that Exchange has all the virus' written for that application because it is used twice as much. One problem... Lotus Notes has approximately 80 million users but virus' are rarely written for Lotus Notes (or Groupwise for that matter). So the problem is not that Exchange is not used more often than any other email system, it's just an easier target.

The USA is not in a state of war; no war has been declared by Congress since WWII, so we haven't been in a state of war for nearly 60 years.

Well... yes and no. Officially, you are correct. The last *official* war in which the US was involved was WWII. Technically speaking, the US has been at war on and off since WWII (Korean WAR, Vietnam WAR, Gulf WAR I, Golf WAR II). Congress only OFFICIALLY tells us that we are at war. Then they can mandate that factory X will start making bombs (for example) instead of squirt guns (like they did in WWII).

In times of war, in times of danger, that is when we MOST need our civil liberties defended. These are the times when a free and open government is most essential to our very survival. Freedom is not a luxury that we cast aside when times get tough, it is the very thing that allows our country to live at all.

I agree with you, but we need to clearly define what these liberties are. For example, during WWII coastal cities like Miami (for example) did not like the idea of a black out. And at the beginning of the war, they did not turn off their lights. However, the city lights perfectly silhouetted the merchant ships for the U-Boats. Easy pickings. I believe that congress had to mandate that the coastal cities go to a total blackout. My point behind this? Some people may declare that being FORCED to turn off their lights was a violation of their civil liberties!

3 - Sun sued MS to pull the MS version of Java

With groupwise, you have all the functionality of any other Enterprise level Email system. With the security of GroupWise, you have less worries with some of the Virus' that can plague many of the MS Email systems.

The Directory Services of Novell is far superiour of any other company's, mostly because it is more mature (going on what... 9, 10 years now?). Novell's eDirectory can handle about a billion objects in the Tree. Maybe more now, I am not sure

In short, they don't. However, the campaigns keeps MS's face and name out there to the general public. It is a proven fact that companies that advertise during a bear market will be on top when the economy improves. (At the very least, they will be better off than before the bear market).
