  1. We already have curbside PC recycling in Boston on Dell Offers Curbside Computer Recycling · · Score: 1
    It works like this:

    1. Leave monitor/PC by curb for trash pickup.
    2. Trash pickup won't take them (they're supposed to be dropped off at DPW)
    3. PC/monitor gets kicked around by local kids for several weeks.
    4. Broken glass causes flat tire or injury. Lead & cadmium from monitor leaches into soil.
    5. Street sweeping eventually picks up the broken little bits.

I see this about once a month in my neighborhood. I admire Dell for trying to provide a solution, but I don't think it's easy enough for the teeming masses.

  2. who provides his T1? on Spam King Lives Large off Others' E-Mail Troubles · · Score: 1

The article says he's got a T1 going to his home. Can we figure out who he got it from and petition them to shut down his connection? Without that, he can't run his business from home. Can someone local also check and see if he's in violation of any zoning laws for running this operation out of his home?

  3. implement in routers on Throttling Computer Viruses · · Score: 2, Interesting

This technique sounds like it would work well if implemented in routers (to prevent the spread outside your office) or even extending it to switches/hubs (which would protect others on your LAN). It wouldn't require a whole lot of hardware, either. Doesn't sendmail have a similar process to throttle outgoing mail to prevent spam? How's that working for admins with a lot of users? Is it slowing down legit email?

  6. real world analogy on More on Intel v. Hamidi · · Score: 1

Imagine that Hamidi breaks into Intel's offices and has a party in the cafeteria. He carefully cleans up afterwards so there was no monetary loss by Intel. He can still be prosecuted for breaking and entering.

I think he should be prosecuted for the criminal act. Intel should be able to sue for realisic damages, which in this case are quite small.

  7. Re:The only way... on Recycle Fee For Each PC? · · Score: 1

My roadside already is! Here in Somerville, MA you must take monitors & TV's (not sure about PC's) to the DPW as hazardous waste. What happens is people leave them out for the curbside trash collection anyway. The collection guys don't pick them up because hey, they're not supposed to. The monitor gets left on the curb until some kid smashes the tube or kicks it into the street. Eventually the owners bag the broken bits or street cleaners sweep them up. So in addition to the landfill problem, now we have a few piles of this nasty stuff sitting around on the street every week.
