A guy asks a simple question, and he gets his intentions questioned? He obviously wants to watch videos of him and his wife getting it on when he's travelling and he doesn't want his boss getting a copy to wank off to or share on the internet. Where I work, our local drives are shared. Occasionally we have our machines available for remote access. Sure, I do personal stuff on off hours and even leave browser cache files sitting around because the people around here are cool and I don't gotta worry. But I'd never leave naked pictures of my girlfriends sitting around.

You basically just stated his problem back to him. He has two seperate laptops. He needs to store personal information (nudie pics of his wife, etc) when using it for personal uses. He doesn't want to carry around two of them (probably travels a lot).

This shouldn't be too difficult. The easiest immediate solution is to use a boot CD to boot the firewire/usb drive. Shouldn't be hard since he plans to use Linux. Even simpler, you could even use something like the Knoppix live CD and then use the external drive just to store data (mpegs of wife stripping or whatever).

I can't say I know of any laptops that can boot directly to a firewire/usb drive, but I would be interested in this as well.

My daddy couldn't pay for extra RAM, like the gigabytes of RAM your dad bought for you. We were lucky to have what little RAM we had. Hell, we couldn't even afford Internet access. I had to crack accounts at the local university just to have some goddamn internet access. And they were shell accounts. I had to run a PPP emulator on my shell account if I wanted that kind of access. Though most of my time was spent at the # prompt. Yes, I said # prompt, I usually had root access thank you very much.

Sure, NT is nice. But did you have to suffer through MS-DOS 5 and Win3.x?!?? I started with DOS 2.10. But did I complain? No, I just used it and thanked god for giving me the opportunity to use a computer. And all I had was my cartridge BASIC to keep my entertained. Those were the days, when you can boot off of a RAM cartridge. None of these mechanical parts-having magnetic or optical mumbo jumbo.

So true. I heard about Slashdot after about 6 years of *NIX experience (though I'm no guru, but I do know a thing or two). It is the Linux fanboys who are the majority that read Slashdot. You know, the ones who brag about how they switched to Linux and will never used Windows again, even though they just heard about Linux one or two months ago.

I agree to some extent. Lets face it, Linux is for people who already have UNIX experience. That's why I got into it. Its not as powerful in the GUI department as it is in other areas. The power of *NIX has always been in the back end of things.

BTW I also agree with someone who responded to you (RH8 is a POS). Redhat 8.0 isn't all that great. I kept hearing about how great it is from someone I work with. So I tried it out myself. The default install has much to be desired. It'll take a good deal of reconfiguring to get it how I want it. The seemed to have oversimplified it. I don't even think its good for first-time users, though there may a few good points.

  12. Re:Awww Crud! on Danish Anti-Piracy Organization Bills P2P Users · · Score: 2, Funny

I actually think it is a good thing. Piracy is still illegal no matter how much we may like it. I would also be pleased to see some of those people downloading child pornography get slammed and may some software to track their usage and IP's and pass them onto authorities for further investigation.

So is it illegal now to download media that you already own? How does this organization determine who is downloading content they already own?

As for child pornography. I think it is disgusting and wish it didn't exist. However, I don't think people downloading it should get into trouble for it. Here's why: I went on Kazaa the other day and did my usual search for "amateur" and then proceeded to download every file that came up. When I was checking out the porn, to my horror, one of the files was child pornography. I assure you the file name did not indicate this in any way. I immediately deleted it, but it already ruined my porn viewing for the night. I was furious. So now how do you determine who is intentionally distributing or downloading child pornography? Even if it is written in the filename, people like me who mass download stuff may still get it (which sucks, but its a risk we take).

And back to illegal thing. I download amatuer porn. There is nothing illegal about watching some guy bang his wife, or some chick get naked in her dorm room.

If you want free music, make and support free music. If you want free software, make and support free software.

This point I sincerely agree on. I'd like to add: make and support free amateur porn!

Sure, there is plenty of Internet access in major cities, but not too many can afford it. I can't see the portals really caring too much. It really depends on how much these ISPs are asking for. The profit that would come from India is so ridiculously small. But if I were one of these big portals, I would give these ISP's the finger just on principle. I mean, what if ISP's all over the world pulled this tactic? It doesn't surprise me, though; India is a poor, desperate country who can only make money off of other countries.

    2) Install OS and setup remote access
    3) Remove video card

Personally, I wouldn't do this myself and I think video onboard isn't such a bad thing. But running a PC without video is completely possible.
