    Thanks for clearing up that! It had been puzzling me for a while, and the "stolen mobile" theory was only based on reading the contract and anecdotal evidence. Why is it not surprising that it was Philips? :-)

    The USA also has the largest absolute number of prisoners (~2 million) in the world, compared to Chinas ~1.5m or so. Well it helps to keep the unemployment figures down I guess.

    I have relatives in Fiji, and have rung them. I am sure there are people who have relatives in Tahiti or the Cook Islands.

    I wonder if diallers "humanise" the modem dialling or it it can be detected by looking at the spacing of the digits... not really worth it I suppose.

    IIRC at one stage Mercury 121 (mobile) phones banned the two rather large countries of Pakistan and Nigeria from being called, presumably since that's where all the stolen mobile phones were calling.

    I thought "The Spirits Within" was a typical Square game, although it did have more interactivity (on the PS2 controller) than their other games.

    And people wonder why there is energy wastage in the West. Your PC or VCR or TV on "standby" may well use more electricity than my living room light (14 watts) when it is turned on! The PS2 may use less (4 watts) but that is still non-zero. Some people pay for electricity you know.

    Especially the keyword "monorail" which triggers automated bots into posting partial scripts of a certain Simpsons episode.

    Well, here in the UK members of the RIAA have been warned about ASBOs (anti-social behaviour orders - used on "problem" kids). If they continue to illegally flypost for their megacorps, the record company executives will be personally jailed. There should be more of that sort of thing.

    So create a file called batman.avi or whatever (of a game of ping-pong) which you own, and send down a DMCA takedown notice to Warner's ISP. (who knows, maybe AOL has an automatic takedown policy for threats)

    A trivial example I posted 15 years ago is by ordering the definition of global functions. If you have n functions in a file then you have n! ways of ordering them (assuming they are all prototyped correctly).

    Well in that situation I wouldn't see why e.g. tribes from british colombia would complain about their historic rights.

    Even if you go by present boundaries, countries like turkey, egypt, pakistan would come under bin ladens claims. As for the other mosque, I don't think Israel intends to walk into the sea any time soon.

    Well US troops are AFAIK not in the land that the holy mosque was in. i.e. they are in parts of saudi arabia that were not muslim when mohammad was around, but were later conquests. So where would the borders lie? Would american troops stationed in spain count as being in the way?

    Also, the insurgents seem to agree with the USA: they think 50 muslim civilian lives is worth injuring 1 US soldier; if they thought otherwise, they would not keep making that tradeoff. :-(

    This reminds me of a story I heard about health systems.

    If you're poor, you use the public health system.

    If you're well off, you use the private health system.

    If you're Kerry Packer (really well off) you treat the public health system as your own private health system.

    The story goes he had a heart attack or something and an ambulance saved his life. He found out that most amubulances didn't have that piece of equipment (i.e. he was lucky) so he paid for all the ambulances in the country to be upgraded to have that equipment, in case he needed it again :-) [or paid 50% of the cost to be matched by the govt.]
