There's a book I read called Mining the Sky by John Lewis that makes a good case for the economics of getting building materials from space instead of firing them up the gravity well - the Moon is a bit barren unless we can find water there, but one of the numbers he brings up is that even one of the smaller metallic asteroids (say 1km across) in near earth orbit could contain billions of dollars worth of iron, not to mention the 'trace' amounts of precious metals that would probably also run into the billions.
There's also a lot of silicon up there for building solar satellites, but man, I've played Sim City, I know what trouble beaming power from space can be...
I know the best thing to do is to take the high ground and ignore him, but I'd quite like to see Rockstar and every other company he's ever ranted against to follow on from this, and just say "we're not going to make that game, so I guess we'd better donate $10,000 to charity too," maybe some good could come out of this...
I'd also like to say I got through GTA3 and Vice City without ever knowing you could pick up hookers to regain health and kill them to get your money back, I only found out later from reading one of his 'ban this filth' articles - and that's the only thing from a game I've ever reenacted in real life, so thanks a lot, Jack...
Maybe I've just seen too many bad movies, but what really stretched my suspension of disbelief watching Hulk was the way all the helicopters didn't turn into huge fireballs as soon as they crashed into the ground.... you mean military vehicles aren't really built out of Semtex?
Interesting that that particular statistic should be brought up - the percentage of people who did want MS broken up was 21% - the same as in Slashdot's poll. Funny that two polls biased in completely different directions should agree on something....
I get the feeling that the people behind LinuxOne are some kind of avant-garde performance artists, like the guys who nailed a million dollars to a board and set fire to it... Surely no-one could really be this supremely arrogant and stupid, to alienate their entire potential user base after all this hype, without seriously meaning to...
There are several bigger telescopes on the drawing boards - I remember reading about plans for an array of telescopes out in deep space that would have the ability to resolve landmasses on an Earth-size planet 10 lightyears away - cool or what?:)
Netscape have been blowing goats for years (now there's an image), even when they had the monopoly in the browser market and were charging for Navigator - I was driven into the arms of IE3 by too many failed downloads and crashes in Netscape - I don't think attributing their downfall entirely to dark powers is completely fair...
I have Linux just sitting on my machine, I've yet to find a 'killer app' for it... I use NT for day-to-day work, and I'm not stuck with a single desktop any more - I run the Litestep window manager and have Cygwin for all my command-line needs, so I get the benefits of a unix interface and still get to use all my Windows apps...the best of both worlds:)
Surely it's time to change that stupid, stupid Borg icon on MS stories? There's been so many of them in the past couple of weeks, it's getting old... It's like 'Windoze' or 'Micro$oft' - OK, it was mildly amusing the first time, but after a few YEARS it starts to wear a little thin, no?
I get them from paying attention to current events. It was just a year or so ago that the UK tried to institute mandatory bedtimes for all school children. The attempt failed, not because it was seen as something outside the purview of government (as it would be in the US), but because the government lacked the will to put the plan into effect over the objections of the parents. With slightly less willfull parents, or a more determined government, it might have happened. Would you want a cop knocking on your door every night at 8PM to enforce "lights out"?
Not exactly...The point was not to have policemen tucking little kiddies into bed at night, but to have a set curfew that would give police greater powers to break up gangs of teenagers who congregate in public areas late at night committing acts of petty vandalism and generally causing a nuisance... I'm all for civil liberties, but I'd still like to have intact wing mirrors on my car when I get up in the morning:)

Been done: Eros ex Mathematica aka Math Porn...

Dr. B in the flesh :)
--welcome the cloners back with open arms
How many corporations do YOU know that would allow that kind of situation to even begin... much less allow it to continue?
Um....IBM? ;)

Well of course I support them...No-one else will, therefore they are now the underdog :)

Can't believe no-one's mentioned the movie yet...Bill gets shot in the face, I think that neatly encapsulates all the points raised here :)
