  5. My Letter To the Author on Don't Sever A High-Tech Lifeline for Musicians · · Score: 2, Insightful

Dear Janis, I must say I was shocked by your article in the LA Times (http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/suncomme ntary/la-oe-ian2feb02,0,2630989.story?coll=la-head lines-suncomment) I too am a musician, engineer and a journalist, and have what I feel is a firm understanding of music law. The article you wrote fails to make one very important point: it is one thing for an artist to offer their music up as a free download (provided they have the rights to it) and its a very different thing for people to download something that the artist has not authorized. There are many musicians who offer free downloads on their websites, which is a great promotional opportunity. Buy peer 2 peer services offer the potential for people to get any music they want (for free) without the artist's consent. A good analogy would be a market giving away free samples, and then saying since that increased food sales, all the food in the store should be free. I highly suggest you write a follow up to your article as it is perpetuating the notion that music should be free.

  9. Re: Apples and oranges... on xtunes Forced to Change Name, Appearance by Apple Lawyers · · Score: 1

BAH! Rather then try and make something original, the xTunes project just copied pre-existing software. This is the problem with thing like KDE, the GIMP, etc. They're just bad imitations of good software. The open source community has an opportunity to make innovative software, instead they seem hell bent of making clones of windows software and poor copies of mac stuff.

  10. Re:Maybe the X Consortium should sue Apple on xtunes Forced to Change Name, Appearance by Apple Lawyers · · Score: 1

There is no way in hell you can argue that xTunes isn't a (pathetic) attempt at an iTunes rip off. Thats what the issue is about here, so don't try and pretend like the xTunes guys aren't trying to bite off apple here.

Actually, Watson was a rip off of Sherlock. Sherlock came first. That is why the watson people can't really complain. Apple kind of just took it back. And xTunes was utter shit anyways. Dreadful at best. Who cares.

I don't really like the tabs, they take up too much screen space. I like OmniWeb because is it has a very minimal interface. I want to see the page I reading, not crap all over the place from the browser. I just use the dock to manage multiple windows, which works great, and effectively does the same thing.
