I have to laugh at all the people responding "He used a mac!"... they totally missed the point of what you were saying. Namely, that the Alien AI would be adaptive and self-healing, and would totally block out Windows, leaving Mac as the only option...:)
Having used FreeBSD, Linux, Windows XP Pro, and Windows 2K3 Standard, my opinion is this: FreeBSD for servers, Windows XP Pro for the desktop.
It works very well for me - in fact, well enough that I'm considering trying out Vista when they release that. Part of the reason it works so well for me, is that instead of being locked in to IE, OE, and Office, I have opted instead to use Firefox, Thunderbird+Lightning, OpenOffice, and other OSS tools (like Eclipse). Theoretically, I could swap out Windows XP Pro and barely even notice the difference.
Why don't I? Because I don't feel like it just yet. It's comfortable.
No, I simply didn't own one. I haven't seen a console I was compelled to purchase since the NES. And even then, I was 8, so I didn't buy it myself:)
However, the DS and the Wii are changing my mind.
Xbox360 also kind of interested me, when I played Call of Duty 2 on it for a few minutes. However, the PS3 doesn't interest me at all. Sony's "We are the Alpha and the Omega" attitude towards consoles TOTALLY puts me off. Not interested.
Yay! Yet another use for powered USB ports.

Too bad the one in my keyboard is unpowered, and my tower is in such an awkward position.:(
S'ok:) I suspect the policy at Shaw may not last much longer; they may have to give up their DVR monopoly if they want the CRTC to turn a blind eye to their burgeoning telephone business.
That's a good point, and you're right - I was referring to "ricer" gamers. Also, when I said I don't own a console, I neglected to mention that I do own a DS:) I don't have many games for it, but it's a fun unit.:)
Wii isn't targetted at "dedicated" gamers - it's for casual gamers or people who haven't tried gaming before. It might be a shot in the arm for the console industry as a whole, in fact. Heck, I haven't owned a console since the NES, and I'm thinking of getting a Wii... I just wish they'd called it the Revolution instead:)
I'd love to have a DVR, but unfortunately my local Cable company has a monopoly and will not work with 3rd-party DVRs. And the one they sell costs $748, which is WAY out of my comfort zone.
But seriously, it's not due to lack of technology that I haven't got a laptop, it's due to lack of necessity. It would be a luxury, one I can't afford just yet. What I meant by the GP was that this made it easier for me to withstand the urge to look into purchasing one. My desktop with dual monitors will suffice for now...

That's like accusing Firefox of failing to make the web safer because PCs still ship with IE. It's not Firefox's fault! Blame the supplier. They are at fault.
That's not true. V for Vendetta had Dell logos ... ;-)
The line is delivered with such egotism and authority that she can't NOT know unix! In fact, *only* Unix admins can be that cock-sure and arrogant.
(Sidenote: I am a Unix admin, at times.)

I bet that one was Number 11 :) It was excusable, because ... hey ... it was Jeff Goldblum!
Our jobs are BORING. Admit it. If the true essence of our profession was placed on film, people would walk out of the theatre.
... ;-)
Unless, that is, it was encapsulated in a vehicle like "Office Space"
And here's a youtube video!
But when will they finally breed the North American House Hippo!? Huh? That's what I want to know.

Oh, so they do work with Shaw, and they do sell the retail PVRs in my area? Interesting ...
The name is Pond. James Pond.
Couldn't they just give it a Dual-branded Japanese name as well?

My local government cable authority is the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. I'll look into it.

You assume that the FCC has any jurisdiction over my country.
:)
Perhaps the CRTC has a similar mandate.
Can it remotely control the Digital Cable Box? It's some motorola brand thing ...

Yes, you can, and right now the price is too high :) I have to wait until after I buy a house ...
BlueTooth, actually. ;-)

Have I mentioned lately how *GLAD* I am that I haven't purchased a laptop yet?
:)
This sort of shakedown can only serve to improve the product before I finally pull the trigger and make that purchase

It could be done in the same manner as comments are on Gizmodo - give you 60 seconds to reconsider. :)
