IIRC, there was a brief scene in Fellowship of the Ring showing younger Bilbo in the cave when he finds the Ring (i.e. during the story of The Hobbit). It seems to me like Ian Holm would be just fine playing a younger Bilbo in the new movie (with appropriate makeup).
I agree with the parent. In my opinion, the best reason for CS students to take higher math is not so much for its practical application to real-world projects, but to train the mind to think logically about solving problems in general. I think this is applicable to all areas of life.
Personally, I think that my understanding of math has made me a much better programmer than I would have been otherwise.
It says on the linked page that "MEDIA ONLY Must be purchased with corresponding License". I'll take it that you are correct though and a promise is sufficient.
I agree with the parent, but we do we do about it? I think it all comes down to the fact that nobody is willing to sacrifice their "piece of the pie" for the greater good of humanity, especially when they know it may very well make no difference in the grand scheme of things. It's unfortunate that we haven't come up with a better system than money to motivate people, but it isn't an easy problem to solve.
No one raindrop thinks that it is responsible for the flood.
I don't think you can buy a media kit from Microsoft without purchasing software licenses in the same order. At least, this is what they told us where I work. The reason, of course, would be so that people aren't installing an unlicensed $25 copy of Windows on every computer at the office. The threat of piracy is also increased due to the fact that the Keyless Media Kits are intended to be sold to companies, and DO NOT require activation so that deployment is easier.
I believe that all the parent poster was saying is that it's silly to expect EVERYTHING you buy to be refundable in pieces. I agree completely. Do we really need to get up in arms over the cost of the OEM Windows install on your new $399 PC?
'If you should happen to touch the inside of the Bridge while you are passing over the barrier, the Bridge will close and you may become trapped as well.
To release yourself, press the red controller button. If, for some reason, your magic should fail and you still cannot release yourself, press game reset and "reincarnate"'.
I'd like to see other developers use that excuse.
'If, for some reason, your karma should fail and you still cannot release your system, press "Ctrl-Alt-Del" and "reincarnate"'
Because a "chess tree" like you describe is an O(n^n) algorithm. The sun would probably become a red giant and consume the solar system before a single chess game played out this way would complete.
Perhaps someone with a better knowledge of physics could enlighten me, but doesn't it seem that a 2000-lb. car in freefall would fall a little faster than the "passengers" inside (wind resistance and what not)? It doesn't look like they are strapped in or anything...

Thank you. I was beginning to think I was the only one here who read the article and thought "Oh boo-fucking-hoo. Those RIAA bastards ".
This ridiculously obvious PR attack against the RIAA is as bad as any they themselves have ever created.
Come on, people...

There's a place called "Beaver Stadium"?!!
Oh, come on, you were thinking it too...

Max: Mind if I drive Sam?
Sam: Not if you don't mind me clawing at the dashboard and screaming like a cheerleader.
