It's sad to see the open source community bickering like this about two good applications that could be even better. (Sigh...) so much energy wasted that could be spent coding...
Bill G doesn't need to beat Linux; we're doing it ourselves.
This has got to be the most pointless discussion ever on Slashdot. I mean, come on, you're on a Slashdot (FRIGGIN SLASHDOT!) discussing religion, morality, and pseudo world history. That does it, I'm turning off my computer and staring blankly into space for the rest of the day.
As a developer, your opinion probably isn't going to make a difference. In my experience, some project managers will give you lip service about your input into project timelines, but in the end all that matters is what the sales/marketing person told the customer. Most of the time (and especially in times like these) the slave drivers get the most recognition from the upper management.
Is it right? Absolutely not.
Does it produce better products. Absolutely not.
But just try to explain this to a CFO who wants revenue THIS quarter.
The average Slashdot reader must be even dumber than I thought. Obviously this is fiction...
You want a real story about people traveling into space? Ask the Russians. Some of their cosmonauts were still alive when they floated away from earth.
This moron is going to freeze immediately. Falling at that speed, at that altitude, is going to freeze him solid. I mean, come on, a commercial jetliner flies at around 30,000 ft (less than 6 miles), where its -30 to -70 F. It only gets colder as you go up, and when you factor in the windchill....this guy is going to come down like a big French popsicle.
How a parachute will work at 30 miles up with no air pressure...
This guy seems to have no concept of rocketry, aerodynamics, or atmoshpere. I'd have to say it's a publicity stunt.
As much as I wish it were otherwise, the market dictates the technology, not the other way around.
The funny thing is that this discussion is taking place on Slashdot, which is horribly uncompliant with any W3C standard.
Unfortunately most of the tech community are hypocrites that would rather spout off than work together to find a solution.
Which is why Microsoft is still around...(sigh)
...if people checked the files they downloaded. Right now, without the RIAA involved, there are sooo many currupt/partial/bogus files out there. It seems that most people download files, and then either don't check them, or don't care, and leave the bogus file in their shared folder, where other unsuspecting users download them. If people cleaned up their shared folders once in a while, this wouldn't be such a problem. After all, how many bogus files can the RIAA possibly put out there? How many machines can they set up for sharing them? Their presence would be a drop in the bucket. If everyone deleted bogus files instead of passing them on, their whole plan wouldn't work.
Have people actually been downloading or sharing songs off this new album? It seems to me that there is just less interest, not more pirating. Just about everyone I know has two or three MP3s from "Play", but I can't say I know anyone who's got MP3s off "18". Speaking strictly from my little window on the world, I don't see any negative correlation between sharing and album sales. In fact, the opposite seems true.
On the other hand, I have heard frustrated artist attack their fans before. Artists like Billy Corgan have become famous for it. But the real problem is not that hard-core fans are not buying their albums; the real problem is that they are failing to attract new fans. How much radio play has Moby gotten with this album? How many TV shows and movies are using tracks off it for their soundtracks (like Porcellin for Party of Five)? Most popular albums don't break sales records by selling to the true fans, but rather to the fickle masses.
I've got to take issue with this. Where I work my clients nearly all use Netscape 4.7. Why do they use an outdated browser when they can get a new (more standards-compliant) browser for FREE?? Because for one reason or another, they don't care. I could educate them, but this would require a baseball bat and some rubber hose.
So, as much as I'd like to code in XHTML 1.1 and use style sheets for all my formatting, I'm stuck hacking something up to work with good ol' Netscape 4.7.
The simple truth is that you can't drive technology from the supplier side. And you can't create dynamic, attractive web site that have complex layouts by adhering to the most recent standards.
Most techies are hypocrites. They chastize others for not adhering to certain standards, while ignoring other standards themselves. For Pete's sake, look at the source for this site!
I don't mean to be difficult, but isn't it extremely cold at 30 miles up? Since one of his return options is to eject with a parachute, I think this sheds some light on the kind of "preparation" going on here. Nevermind the lack of oxygen and air pressure (which will make his parachute useless,) if this guy makes it to 30 miles, he's gonna wish he was on fire.
The RIAA can bite my ass. Most of the music that is being released these days is awful anyway. Maybe they should spend less time and money "protecting" their latest singer/rapper/actor/model/tv commercial star's lipsinc soundtrack, and start looking for real talent.
Whhhhhaaaaatttt???
That's just embarrassing.
Care to elaborate on where exactly I misused a coma?
Didn't think so...
You sir, are an idiot!
Dammit, use both hands when you type! Your crank can wait until you tab back to goatse.cx.

You silly Canadians, you have high-speed internet access in even fewer parts of your country than the US.

Then change the theme, stupid!

Our PM is a former history teacher, with no technical experience whatsoever!
A study on Open-source Software funded by Microsoft- that's 1 degree of separation. It must be .Net!

Oh wait, I'm just some schmuck talking about kernal development. Can that get me arrested too?

I hope this is a joke. Katz, do you even skim the replies to your articles??? Please fire yourself already.
Wow, even Katz's writing is better than the gibberish on that site.
Subpar post as usual Katz. Go back to your wandering speculations on globalization.
