I noticed Magnatune was created in April of 2003. So in 3 years (36 months) they've "signed" 12 metal bands.
That's *one* every three months. Not a very impressive rate.
Considering all the unsigned bands out there (I don't recall the website, but there's one that streams unsigned metal acts, they've got *hundreds*) that are *dying* for exposure, I wonder how hard Magnatune is really trying.
BTW, one label that "does it all", as you postulated?
allofmp3.com
Say what you will of their legality, they've got the tunes, straight.mp3, no nonsense, no DRM, no bull.
I see that site trotted out all the time, so I went and looked at it.
In the "Metal and Punk" section, they have 18 bands. Total. 18.
I'm a metalhead, I don't like punk. Dicsounting the solidly punk bands in that list (anything listed with the term "punk" in it), there are 12 bands there, 1 of which is totally instrumental.
My collection of metal spans over 300 CDs and an additional 6000 mp3s, Magnatune's got nothing.
From an article I read on the effect of telecommuting, employees are *more* effective, or accomplish more, in less amount of time, when working from home, as it allows for a more relaxed atmosphere, among other benefits.
But it's been a little while since I read the article, and I may have it wrong.
Now I don't know if this "idea" MS has, is aimed at countries outside the USA, or not, but I can tell you, I have enough trouble *giving* away old PCs (sub 1 Ghz), much less sell, or renting them.
There are so many old PCs being disposed of throughout the world that no one wants to begin with, this idea of renting one seems destined to fail.
So someone made a car that'll outrun mine. Big deal.
I want to see that car hold its re-sale value like mine (hint: I own an Abarth), or better yet, appreciate in value (hint: I used to own a TVR, which I sold for more than it cost new.)
This is all well and good in theory, but do you have *any* idea just how many *business-grade* applications *demand* the user be an Admin?
I do a ton of work for medium scale businesses, and the software they use, is almost 100% custom written to fill a niche (whatever niche the business happens to be in) and I've run across a few that are so badly written (with regards to security anyway) that the software *requires* you to log in as "Administrator", logging in as any other name, even if that account is set to Admin, breaks the software.
Yes it's dumb, yes it'sd a risk, but until MS can convince software programmers to adapt to the new way of writing things (and that will take forever, knowing the development cycle for some of this software) we will continue to have this problem.
>>Charity is not zero-sum
Actually, it is. Look at, for example, the Scandinavian countries. They opened their borders to war-refugees, gave them food, clothing, shelter, tax breaks, and so on, and the only thing they got for it, was a rise in crime.
The backlash has begun. Nationalism is on the rise, partly fueled by the end of compassion for these "refugees" who refuse to integrate into their new home.
This is but one example, if you would like, I'll be happy to supply you with more.
>>That explains why they are not helping him, but it does not explain why they are opposing him. And they are opposing him.
Well I for one, oppose the 100$ laptop because it doesn't solve the problem.
The problem being, of course, corrupt gov'ts, starvation, death, famine, plague, civil wars, and general atrocity.
There is only so much money, supplies, and compassion to go around, and this is siphoning off some of that, for a project doomed to failure (note, even if they hit the target of 100$, or 50$, or even 1$, it's *still* a failure in that it doesn't address, solve, or even acknowlege the problem.)
Having owned a number of Italian sports cars (only up to a Maserati, never could afford a Ferrari)I can agree that build quality is "cavalier", but when you drive one, really drive one, you can tell these cars were built by human beings that have a passion for building performance cars with character and soul.
*Any* of your japanese (and yes, I've owned those too) cars, whether economy cars, or sports cars (300zx, rx-7) are sterile, and feel as if they were designed and built by a computer.
And your "riceboy" car *may* beat a Ferrari in the 1/4 mile, but it will *never* beat a Ferrari for style, love, or resale value.
Who says I do? But your question is not relevant to mine, or to the story as listed. MS is offering (and attempting to make money) off a service to "fix" (or repair) problems found in their *own* OS.
That's either chutzpah to the nth degree, or sheer arrogance on their part.
This just goes to show that Muslims (or for that matter, anyone what takes religion too seriously) have no sense of humor. The slightest perceived insult, or slight, and they go off on a killing spree.
Stupid sods. I'm Danish, you want a pice of me? Bring it on. We Danes are not afraid of anyone.
>>...Living in those slums is almost like being in the Third World, I'd guess....
And you'd be completely, totally, and utterly wrong.
I've been in both places (in the 1st, as a building inspector, in the 2nd, as a visitor) and the difference is like night and day. Americas slums still have power, water, sanitation and are more or less environmentally resistant. 3rd world slums are literal garbage dumps. Power is a concept, not a reality. Water is a death sentence. Sanitation is an unknown idea. Never mind safety from roving death squads, armed gangs, slave traders, or worse.
You've never worked in the real world have you?
Trade some "functionality"? Are you kidding me?
Windows is the *standard* because the applications that businesses *require* to you know, stay in business, exist only for Windows.
I hate MS as much as the next guy, but get a clue, there's a *reason* Windows is everywhere.
Fair enough.

Not at all, I'm simply stating that the level of defense is only as good at the AV scanner is.
If nothing is detected, but the scanner is crap, then you might be rooted, but not know it.

"Detected" being the operative word here.

Colour me not impressed.
Read "For those who walk in darkness" to find out what happens when meta-normals refuse to register.
Excellent reading (just ignore the cartoon based off the book)

Gee-
/. at all...
And here I was going to funny with my OP. I tell ya, I don't understand
Why don't you just use your phone to, you know, talk?
Yeah, but this is slashdot, whenever someone makes a comment about Linux, I'm never sure if they are serious, or high on crack.
>>Time is an illusion
Lunchtime doubly so.
>>Or you could just boot Linux onto your Xbox 1, run windows Vista through an emulation, then play Halo 2.
You are kidding right? Right?

Why don't you fix your fucking software in the first place?

I could go on, but I think you get the picture.
Not only invite them in for tea, but discuss the things that *they* want to talk about (this will take a long time)
While you are earnestly talking with them, start removing your clothes, slowly, one item at a time.
I once got down to undoing my pants before they left, and they've never bothered me again.
Here's how I did it-
Wait until you get some kind of spam in your postbox that comes with an envelope that's already pre-paid for postage.
Steam it open, wrap it around a brick, and send it back.
