  1. shameless plug on A Simple, Family-Oriented CMS? · · Score: 2, Interesting

my friend and i wrote exactly what you're talking about for our senior project. dotorg. that will do what you want; it's pretty easy to set up, you can share files, it's easy to secure (uses jaas) and you can write your own plugins for it.

  2. Re:Nonsense, but not for the reason you'd think on How Linux Beats Windows in ID Management Ease · · Score: 1
I used to think that writing a password on a sticky note was the dumbest idea. But then a week ago I almost did it. Where I work, they just updated their password policy, and it has some pretty strange requirements that make things almost impossible to remember:
    • 10-15 characters (not bad)
    • at least 1 lowercase letter, at least one uppercase letter (ok)
    • at least 1 digit (no biggie)
    • can't start or end with a digit (just like a variable, still not rough)
    • no substring can be a dictionary word, where words like "ayu" and "ber" are dictionary words (wtf!?)

so, of the first five passwords i tried, none of them passed the test because of its absurd dictionary rule. i eventually just came up with a way to count that makes my password fairly easy to guess given the constraints, but also fairly easy to remember. come on, is not allowing the password "ayud4m3p0rf4v0R!" really going to compromise my security?

i'm starting to think biometrics will be nicer because i doubt they're going to make me change my fingerprint.

look at the ten-millions of consoles that sell each year, then look at the (hopeful here) millions of apples that sell each year. which one is the better market to be in? especially considering that whatever next-gen console you buy, you're buying ibm.

seeing how the consoles seem to be a pissing contest for each company in terms of features and speeds, and that ibm's chips are both easier to develop for (i'm a risc fan) and are generally considered better, i think they do have an inside track.

I almost got in trouble for that in high school. I was in a computer science class, and I sat at the same computer most of the time. One day, I'm pulled out of my history class to see the principal and the cs teacher. She accused me of "hacking the computer", because it wouldn't start up anymore.

I had to emphatically explain that I had no reason to do it, nobody gained anything, and that I never opened the computer, so I couldn't have fried the cpu. I got lucky, and eventually the thing blew over. Unfortunately, this shows how dumb most HS teachers/administrators are. If a computer breaks and you're in the room and you're known as a geek, you're probably fucked.

Well, if they set up specs for the systems and required that manufacturers go by that, then the support wouldn't be that much of a nightmare. Your driver argument makes no sense, because lots of hardware manufacturers already provide drivers for OS X. It's not another straggling unix distro; it's an operating system with customers who are willing to spend money for what they want. Accordingly, hardware vendors generally support them.

Not so much nerds, as the environment that we work in. Workers are encouraged to excel and out-perform others, because they get more recognition and hope that leads to more pay and promotions. Someone above discussed airline mechanics unions, where they guarantee some amount of training and skill. This would be difficult to do in some of today's IT squads, because there are some people who are still looking for the "any" key, but who call themselves coders. The amount of competition between workers is how you keep unions from forming, and employers are doing a good job of maintaining that competition. It's a lot like slavery back in the early days of America, where slave owners would separate the slaves into separate classes (in-house slaves, field slaves, etc.) to discourage unity.
