    The TECH is still there. DVD "seamless" branching is alive and well and working just fine. There's plenty of multi-angle non-adult films out there.

    The point is that it isn't merely the card that does this, but the system behind it.

    Also, storing anything on the card itself beyond an identifier -- my Visa doesn't hold my balance -- seems silly.

    I kept waiting for the article that said, "So we went down to a transit terminal armed with as many different RFID and NFC cards as we could find, trying to see which ones worked and which didn't." Then we used our easily purchasable RFID/NFC card reader to see what information the cards we tried had in common with the Federal IDs and the transit cards -- and here's our findings.

    Now, I understood *that* sort of journalism would have taken a hundred bucks and a couple of hours, but... ...sheesh, people.

    A big drawback to the card system is that it eliminates this ploy.

    Yeah, 'cause it'd be impossible to allow people with a card linked to an account to pre-buy fares at a lower rate.

    If you cant' trust your daughter to do some driving at 16, you did a shitty job of parenting..

    So much angst...

    My daughter is on the cusp of driving. And assuming there aren't any major behavioral changes between now and then, she'll get the privilege of driving.

    ....but if technology allows me to be notified if her car goes into Mexico, I'll continue to assume a trust-but-verify stance with my children.

    They go to bed on time -- but that doesn't mean I don't peek in their bedrooms from time to time.

    I've taught my daughter to be responsible.

    ...that doesn't mean I shouldn't be notified if she's had a lapse in that responsibility.

    Kids should break a few rules. That's part of growing up. Getting alerted on it and going all batshit crazy about it are two different things. I'll respond appropriately when my kid sneaks her first beer or stays out past curfew or pretends her friends parents are home when she stays the night somewhere. Now that I'm an old man, I know I didn't get nearly as much past my parents as I thought I did. :)
