The tech market here in Portland is SO in the tank it's scary.
TO ALL SLASHDOTTERS:
Anyone looking for a contract network engineer with high end Cisco router/switch experience? I'll pay you for the opportunity to reassure myself I'm in the right field!!!
Speaking from the perspective as an Intel contractor who does product development/QA on wireless gear....I would NOT buy an Intel wireless device. They often develop gear in a joint venture with GemTek of Taiwan.
Most slashdotters probably know that nearly all the wirless cracking/sniffing/snooping tools require the Prism chipset. Intersil/Prism makes some of the best 802.11 gear, and that is what is used by Cisco Aironet, and Orinoco (Lucent) gear. If Intel starts using a better wireless chipset...I would see this as a good thing.
Until they do..i repeat. I WILL NOT buy the gear my own employer develops.
Speaking from experience in the Portland Oregon market.... someone is on crack
Most of my friends in the tech field are all hurting in a bad way.
I have inside info from several different hiring managers complaining about the sheer number of applicants for one position. (network security slots in health care and a few actual tech shops) where the manager and HR have had to deal with 500 applicants for one position.
The supply/demand model for tech workers in Oregon is severly broken!! DONT MOVE HERE!!
Nice use of a definition.
I think on a larger scale, the problem lies with people who grey the lines of ethics and morality.
There seems to be a common hacker mentality that it's OK to trespass, steal, hack into, etc...
However, I would bet my paycheck that those same people who are morally/ethically bankrupt are more than willing to take advantage of legal protection if their home were to be broken into.
Get a clue: STEALING IS WHEN YOU TAKE SOMETHING FROM SOMEONE THAT DOES NOT BELONG TO YOU.
TRESPASSING IS WHEN YOU ENTER SOMEONE ELSES SPACE UNINVITED.
Just because wireless LAN traffic is on the air waves for all to intercept does not give anyone the right to eavesdrop.
Are we allowed to do this with cell phone traffic? NO.
"Similarly: The Internet is becoming the repository of all we have accomplished as a society.... But no mention on having to work through the garbage."
True, but is this any different than libraries. No one ever said that ALL the information contained within the walls of a library is good and useful. It is however a place to find info, if you're willing to do the legwork to find it.
Ultimately it is always up to us as individuals to filter out the good signal from the noise of input we receive from all directions.
I couldnt agree more.

"ProdiGene also will hire more of its own inspectors to ensure compliance with federal regulations, he said." NO KIDDING?

Sounds like Locke posting to the "NET" Now we just need Demosthenes and we'll be on our way.
