Ok, the topic is milkable. No question. But the thing is that we're drifting into neo-theocracy. Which scares the pants of quite a few of us. Science is a process of putting peices of a puzzle together in a way that seems to make the most sense, assuming a total lack of divine intervention. Science doesnt make something true, it just shows how the picture seems to fit together. Once something fits well enough it gets moved from hypothesis to theory.. and from there becomes a well founded theory, assuming that it holds up to scrutiny.

Countering Evolution Theory is a total short circuit of scientific method. Even assuming that evolution is untrue, there needs to be a new scientific theory that can better explain the diversity of life on earth, and the extreme coincidences that point to common ancestry. The very tightly linked genome information is really hard to just explain away with some alternate scientific theory..

Evolution is a theory that is brutally hard to poke any real holes in.. Most people try to counter with statistical arguments that skip some of the in between steps.

Anyway, the point is that rational people are afraid of whats happening, and arent going to simply look away when they see neo-theocracy coming closer.

As fas as I can tell (My factbase is weak here) the DirectX10 will still need a driver, a WDDM driver but still a driver. The Nice Thing is that the DX10 cards will all be able to perform a whole suite of functions, but the driver code should let them do it in different ways. The hardware must be able to do certain things to be certified, but I think the drivers can be pretty different from card to card. I have a feeling that without a driver the machine will still boot to 640x480x256.

The logic that is being used is the same logic that spawned the winmodem. So that there is some silly peice of junk software that is coded by chimps that seems to have lockup problems on the OS that your using. In addition it makes the diagnostics of the device a total pain in the rear.

Leaving functionality up to "driver guys" really makes me cringe, its just really bad form. The hardware should be so simple to interface with that most people could just forgo the driver, leaving the drivers in the hands of the high performance nerds.

I completely understand that this would result in slightly more expensive graphics cards in the short term. I get that every 5-10 years the "basic" functionality needs to be bumped to something better. I even get that it seems like a pretty good way to have flexibility by not locking your hardware into a mold. There are some real issues that would need to be addressed, but I think the increased cost of hardware is really worth it.

I dont expect that the video card industry would even bother to move in a direction which may be less profitable, even if it did mean that systems would be more reliable. But I still feel the need to rant about solutions that save a nickle by causing a dollars worth of headache to the customer.

The regenerative braking couldnt recharge a fuel-cell, but would be great for the Li-battery.

My best guess is that the Li battery shouldnt need to be all that big (capacity wise), if your running a fuel cell then you already have a very efficient way of making electricity on demand, so there is less need to store the energy in the Li batteries. You want to make sure that the boxes that are talking to eachother are very secure from the rest of the world. Most of the concepts on a cluster are about trashing the security of the machines in question. There are ways to make a secureish cluster, but a good firewall is a better way to go. let the firewall talk to your "head node", and preferably locks the "body nodes" from seeing the outside world. There are a ton of ways to get this done. on the cheap have all the body nodes have a non-existant gateway ie 192.168.0.1, set the firewall as 192.168.0.129 (forget dhcp) and let the head node point to the 192.168.0.129,, and have the firewall route services (ssh, ftp, telnet (ok not ftp or telnet)) to the head node.

    getting started

    1. Load all the boxes with the same OS. (the same way) (DONT select SELINUX or you will cry) 2. build a hosts file (names for machines) /etc/hosts 3. build a hosts.allow , hosts.equiv (still in /etc) 4. add in some entries into securetty for your rlogin rcp rsh.. 5. youll probably have kerberos(weakly secured) rlogin rcp rsh... you want to rename those and replace them with the non secure versions, there are other ways, but this saves a bunch of hassle. 6. pop into /etc/pam.d and adjust the rlogin rcp rsh.. (this may not be needed in some cases). 7. add in a + + in the .rhosts file of each cluster user.

after you have pulled your hair out decyphering my glossed over instructions, you should be able to type: rsh node002 and be at the prompt for node002 with no password asked, and no silly kerberose failed: trying /usr/bin/rsh message given.

At this point then you can configure LAM (you may nee to download it and get it installed on your boxes)

basically it needs an arbitrary file Mynodes.txt that will contain the list of nodes you wish to launch. you type in lamboot Mynodes.txt and then it will kick back some silly error 99% of the time because something small was forgotten. you fight through those errors until it finally gives you a sucess.

Now your golden, then its just a matter of figuring out how to compile and run MPI programs with the mpiCC and mpirun. But if you got through the first gloss over then the rest is a snap.

Remember if these machines see the outside world they are naked, defenseless, and totally exploitable..

Be aware that these instructions can cause all sorts of havok and any reasonable person would just hire an expert.
