Great, there's a big base of Linux servers running the Half-Life engine. However, these days a CS server does not use much CPU power. I'd know it's not from the same dudes, but I'd rather see a Battlefield 1942 server, you need killer hardware if you want +40 players on one server. The finally managed to make a Linux version of the server so the number of server will hopefully raise. But it still uses CPU power.

Not that it is a good thing. I have even seen newer Ford cars with push-rod engines(An engine configuration where the camshafts are located lower in the engine). Ok it was cheap, but really amazing since other mainstream cars have left that concept before 1986.
But maybe one day when Americans have to pay real money for gas, they will start looking at producing and buying cars with higher fuel efficiency. But until then, you'll excuse me if I keep my old Pontiac.

Yes, it does look like that, loadbalancing on layer 4 would do that. But one could enable server health check on the application layer and would cause the server to be marked offline if a specified page returned an error.
But we all know that how things should work in theory, does not always match the real world. It always gets more complicated. :)

  14. Build a exchange point on Australia Investigates Peering Practices · · Score: 4, Interesting

Kids, when I got on the internet here in Denmark, there was no world wide web. You paid for an expensive account on a unix box you could dial into. You could then access Gopher, Veronica, etc. Not that it made it less interesting, because the noise-floor on the "sigal" was very low

Anyway, there were only one place to get connected in the beginning, then came providers and the problem that our local(inside the country) traffic, got routed half across Europe only to end up on the other side of the street. Then in 1994 came the DIX, Danish Internet eXchange point. Horray. So all a provider has to do, is to get a connection to the DIX and they can make peering agreements with other providers to route to each other networks via the DIX.
Now if you visit their site, you can see the prices clearly stated on the page(divide by 7 to get $(damn is going down)).

I(of course) can't see how the entire network in Australia is built, but I'd say a Exchange point would be good. I can't imagine forcing someone to pay for traffic the way the article mentions here, can be good.
But if you set up a exchange point in a major city where everybody is represented, and the cost to get connected to it, is the cable and a small fee to keep it running. Even smaller ISP's can join.
But then again I can't get the complete picture by just reading one article.

  19. Less TV on Whether (And When) To Buy HDTV? · · Score: 1

I must admit that I watch less TV these days.
Once I could spend the whole evening watching TV, but today there is just so many other things I'd rather would be doing, so I don't watch much tv anymore.
Now I have the local version of cable, which brings me about 40 channels and about 3 times as many if I would rent a decoder and subscribe to the digital channels. But I just don't care. I haven't even gotten a DVD player yet. I was into laserdiscs a lot and surround sound before it became "hot".
It looks like more and more channels are going digital and I guess that in a few years, most of the channels I can see today will be digital too. Maybe they will use the step to go digital to squeeze more money out of the viewers. I like the cool features on the digital channels, fx formula 1 where you can choose between different cameras but again I don't feel like paying more so I guess I will end up looking at public service channels only.

A units that fits with my other stereo components, a big display in front making easy to navigate and a remote control. I have had my computer hooked up to my stereo since I got my Commodore 64, and I am tired of it. It is hard for me to describe it, but the Audiotron is so easy to use that I wouldn't exchange it with it a PC, even if I got it for free. And there is no annoying and ugly machine with a noisy fan, nothing you need to boot first and maintainance time is zero.
I like that I just grab the remote control, press "Albums","Artists","Genre","Title" or "Net" and flip through them.

The Philips unit, looks like something I would have in my kitchen(which is fine), but I'd really prefer the Audiotron in my stereo stack.
