  1. Hopfully less 3D stuff on Warcraft 3 Expansion Beta Signups Announced · · Score: 1

I had hoped for less fancy 3D stuff in it but it does not seem like it. I liked the old Warcraft and the others like them, but I didn't play WC2 a lot. Of course they needed the 3D angle to keep up with the games of today, but some of the gameplay from the old versions due to limitations in the graphic cards.
Some people preffered a few powerful units, but I liked the "tons of cheap cannonfodder" approach. The original Warcraft was more of a strategy game and the new ones are more like a action game. So will the manage to improve the gameplay in Warcraft 3? The game can have all the fancy graphics in the world but without gameplay, it won't last long.

  5. Many power companies are working on this on Broadband over Powerlines · · Score: 1

I know that many power companies are working on this, some tries to use the powergrid directly, others puts down fiber when they dig down cables. In ye olde days, the fibers were only along the big lines and for internal use, but later on they have shown to be a great resource to sell and some have created new transmission companies.
The same goes for railroad companies. There are many different type of engines, one of them is the diesel-electric model where a diesel motor drives a electric generator, which then powers the electic motor that drives the train. This solution makes a lot of "noise" that could knock out a transmission line that is placed along the railroad track. So even though fiber might have been a bit overkill in terms of transmission needs, it fits the bill as a method to avoid signalling problems along the track. These lines a, of course also, a great resource for the railroad company to sell transmissions from and it should be fairly easy to put down new lines.

I mean this IS their own code. You could even make a "link bar" with the links so they were easy to remove and re-insert by flipping a bit.
And since there seem to be little/no serving of static pages here, one could easy check for people posting links to the site in a comment also.
I like Slashdot, but I think they should put a little more effort into removing links from sites that clearly can't take the load. Maybe even a simple traceroute on the domains on the articles posted could prevent a lot of this as many ISP's domains often shows when the site are on a fx. DSL line.

Some could argue that if you can't handle the load, you shouldn't be on the internet. But isn't the great thing we all like about the internet, that it's not just for big companies? We see many sites on small private lines, and I think they might be one of the few places left where you can find really interesting stuff that's not just branding of a company name.
