And then there was a lunar eclipse during the second full moon of the month and it reverted to being a VESA local bus card?
First thread to break 500 comment barrier?

Is this the first thread to go over 500 comments? If so , can we get Katz to write something about the signifigance and symbolism of it, especially if the Dow goes over 10,000 anytime soon, could he maybe tie it in with that?
Is it just me or does that look like the Kenobi figure with a different head, in which case I can just swap parts on my nephew's ridiculously large collection.
The reason someone else allows him to be here may be to elicit flames but I suspect his own reason may have something to do with his next book (as mentioned on C-SPAN)which is going to be about the rise of geekdom. In that same interview he mentioned that many of the fans of "Running to the Mountain" thanked him for making it short. My sides ached for the next two days.
All I wanted was info on if and when there would be anything on TV that I could tape for my nephew but we'll probably get into the movie itself before I get through to this site
When, on the overnight repeat of Friday's Washington Journal, Brian Lamb mentioned Katz's then upcoming appearance I submitted the story that he (Katz) was going to be on. It occured to me that, since he was going on to plug his book, he and/or Rob might be reluctant to appear to be further promoting his book here, but one Slashdot reader alerting others to an item of interest should seem sufficiently non-opportunistic. At that time C-SPAN's on-line schedule wasn't up to (a future) date enough for more detail. When they finally put the details on line Sunday I submitted a cut and paste straight from the on-line schedule page. Unfortunately it never made it past the trained mammals, possibly because they were too busy trying to deal with being (your favorite body part here) deep in alligators to pay any attention to my suggestions about swamp-draining. I watched and taped this morning, and sent in an e-mail to journal@c-span.org 30 minutes before the start of the Katz segment wishing him a good show (and trying to get in a subtle plug for slashdot)but no mention of it was made on the air. As for his appearance, I enjoyed it, but it's difficult to reconcile the peson I saw on the air with the Katz we know and love (to flame)here.
No doubt the site is groaning under the burden of grateful slashdotters everywhere constantly flooding Slashdot.org with messages of appreciation for such a fine and free service to us all and of admiration for all those who make it possible. Yeah, that's gotta be it!
As someone with only a POTS connection at home I am taking advantage of the T1 line at the college to speedily tell you how little sympathy I have for people who "only" have ISDN.
Crow's first line was going to be mine but I got beat to it, however, as I mentioned (if my post made it in spite of the recent troubles) in the MS thread the specs for their latest outrage include a way around the lack of a NIC card that requires a random number generator and it seems (Intel) like I've recently seen (Intel) something about a CPU (Intel) that does that very thing (Intel).
BTW In his appearance this morning on C-SPAN Katz mentioned that his next book is going to be about the rise of the geeks. I'm sure you're all as shocked and surprised as I am.
Seems like half the people flaming Judith Lewis for daring to suggest that there are reasons for using MS software didn't notice that she wasn't a male. Most of their flames indicated that they read her article about as carefully as they did her byline.
Jon Katz will be on C-SPAN 1 Monday morning (3/8/99) from 7:30 am EST to 8:45 am EST. It's a call-in, fax-in, e-mail in type show but let's support him there and save the flames for here.
I don't think even Katz thinks that.
I thought the metaphor was about being carried around in the birdcage, i.e, about being the prisoner, not being the warden.

It's not too terribly long

He's obviously a hardwood native to North America!

Funny, I've got that plug in already and when I went to the site the bottom half of the page was foobared.
With no disk drive, where exactly were you going to install that software?
So that's it. I've been wondering what ActiveX was good for.

until you get it fixed.
In your dictionary words beginning with the letter "i" come *after* those beginning with "n"? How curious.
I sure don't remember the last time any of my hardware won any battles against Microsoft. Usually it just curls up in the corner and whimpers.

Are you sure that those 200 people would have gotten through if he had been running NT?
You forgot to mis-spell "request"

Interesting article, but I gotta question that first sentence.
"Unlike a year ago, most people these days have heard of the Linux operating system."
Even if you restrict the definition of "people" to computer users, I don't think that the majority are aware of Linux.
