Someone should come up with a design where a wind powered generator would convert to a solar powered generator during the hottest part of the day. From what i understand this is the problem with the windmills... the wind doesn't blow in the middle of the day and they don't have a means to store the power, so it just stops being available at that time.
The option being proposed is to improve the transmission capability so that more energy can be stored at locations close to the end user or in some central location... which is not a bad idea.
My additional option is that someone design a wind powered generator (turbine or other) which would convert into a solar powered generator during these "dry spells" ie when the wind dies down due to the heat.... seems like a perfect fit.
My draft idea is that there could just be an additional mirror assembly attached to the windmill structure for use in a solar collector array or a sterling engine type generator. If the mirror assembly somehow would block the windmill from working efficiently, then it could be rotated so as to provide less wind resistance during non-solar generating periods.
Uh i tire of people who think that we humans are somehow not a part of the environment... and that everything we do somehow is "destroying it".
We are a part of the environment and what we do certainly changes it but that doesn't mean we are destroying anything.... in fact the law of conservation of energy states very explicitly that we are quite incapable of destroying anything at all. We can only change things.
Now given that we can and do change things, some changes we make impact ecosystems which otherwise would not be impacted by other natural phenomenon. The degree to which this can be construed as "destroying the environment" is debatable. As is the nature of this so-called "environment" which you speak of .
So really what you want to say is:"Save MY environment... the one that i have come to know and love - as change scares me and i'm worried that whatever environment may result if we don't save this one could make my life difficult"
you've got it exactly right. I trained in martial arts for 10 years... 1st degree black belt (didn't have time or dedication to go another 10 years to get 2nd degree;-)
If you find yourself in a fight like described you have to aim to put your opponents down... immobilize them. Break knees, break necks, knock them out and down... as fast as possible, then when their buddies are reeling from your viciousness you run like hell. (assuming they didn't all just dog-pile you)
If the fight is not going to happen (all talk no action) you talk your way out of it and/or run away... if there's no other option you do the above.

I had the same idea but on second thought it would be a hard strategy to enforce.... they'd have to set up an extra call center just to handle the flood of complaints: "Hey you guys say my email is spam, WTF... it's an email newsletter I send out to my men's club about the benefits of Viagra!"
Not to mention the instant killing of any type of email meme jokes...
I seem to recall the big selling point on the Macbook Air was instant on.... as in it didn't need to spin up to access the drive. Is this still a big feature for SSDs?
I still like the idea of not waiting for my drive to spin up when starting, waking from sleep, etc. Especially as I tend to max out my drives no matter how big they are.... so swapping happens and everything is just a little slower in general.
i think TED should do a talk on how communities can organize local production of energy and food.
Vertical farming, waste to energy conversion, local grids, etc.
If every small home owners association were to set aside some land in their community for a vertical farm which doubled as waste treatment / energy conversion and of course solar collection... a lot of standard utility expenses could be offset by large margins.
imagine if your AC bill was subsidized by the solar array / generator down the street and you could walk over to the vertical farm and pick up organic produce every night for dinner and it was all powered by your waste + solar power?
Communities could be a lot smarter and as it is for only the local residents it can be tailored to their needs / wants much more easily than some large national utility / supplier.
Get software like Sailing Clicker, then install a plugin (or write a script) that will call you when you've lost connectivity with your laptop.
I used to use such a thing to make my laptop screen lock when I left the room... I'm certain it could be updated to make a call or send a text message at least.
How much longer before the masses will finally see through the bad customer experiences with Apple (they go on and on - unreplaceable iPod batteries, rip-off price of the original iPhone (reduced shortly after release to really tick off the loyal early adopters), and now another botched product release. When will the loyal fans finally say "ENOUGH!"
When someone else does it better. As another poster mentioned, the only thing missing from iPhone is tethering... in all other areas, the iPhone beats any phone on the market (unless you're a big keyboard fan, personal preference IMHO).
So until some other company does it better (phone, music, photos, movies, PDA, etc. etc. integrated with PC and the web) iPhone is top dog.
Personally I prefer to tie knots the old fashioned way... the only problem comes when I'm translating from Mayan knots to Aztec knots... oh and the Y2K bug hit me really hard...
iPhone does email, web, photos, music, videos, youtube, maps, calendar, notes, calculator, chat, weather, stocks... and soon games and a remote control for iTunes... oh yeah and it's a phone with voicemail inbox... and it's super cool to boot.
She uses it constantly. Best purchase I ever made. Beats a laptop hands down for her needs and it fits in her tiny little handbag, doesn't have moving parts to break and I don't have to do ANY tech support.
uh... you're supposed to get a Mac if you want to feel like an elitist-asshole... duh. Preferably a Macbook Air with solid state drive... $5000 or so... then install Linux on it.
We could use these devices to replace or augment breakwaters around artificial harbors... since they will have a negative on tidal effects on the shorelines, why not minimize the additional impact by putting them where we are already doing so.
The only problem I see with it is whether they will break storms effectively enough... so possibly there would need to be a combination of earthworks and generators. Maybe some configuration that makes the generators more efficient by directing additional wave energy to them... so a series of Vs (with the tips pointing out to sea) constructed of earthworks and the generators in between at the apex of each created channel.
Anything that analyzes anything in a way that is useful for people is a step in the right direction for AI.
So much of human reaction is related to story telling and shared references where a behavior, event, activity or other interaction can be connected to something we've read or heard or done. It isn't only memory of such things, it is the internal summary we've made as well. If this software can create just such a summary which can be easily cross-referenced with other summaries... then it can help AIs create internal dialogue so that NEW experiences can immediately be summarized in relation to past learned information and categorized accordingly.
An example.... say your AI knows about Auto Mechanics, it then is exposed to a scenario where it needs to diagnose a boat engine problem... it can look at the components, compare it to the knowledge it already has and see that the boat engine is similar in design to an Auto engine. This will narrow down the set of knowledge it needs to utilize to move forward with a diagnosis.
What will be really cool is when they find similarities in patterns that we Humans just don't see.... due to our own close mindedness and need to compartmentalize. As in they will find biological equivalents to mechanical processes and vice versa....
you're welcome... good point on the convenience thing though... I'm certain it will save to PDF if not Word compatible format. Is PDF acceptable in Academia these days? If it was me, I'd want to save it in a read/print only format.... DRM does have it's uses during preliminary stages.
Hmmm no. The answer to your question is that young adults like children are poor listeners and additionally are typically selective listeners. Like yourself, they only hear what they want to hear or at least the part that best suits whatever conclusions they had already jumped to.
Sooo if you want to communicate clearly with young adults you have to keep things very focused and without room for misinterpretation. Using the positive form also forces you to be even more precise, so its really a good method in general for any audience.
Just FYI... the new data plan with AT&T is $30/month while the old plan (Edge) was only $20/month
SO with the new phone you're already paying $120/year more than previous... which means people are actually paying more money over the 2 year period... $199 + $240 (2 year contract) = $459
This is why using the word NOT is counter-productive. When communicating anything you should use the positive form of what ever declaration you are trying to say. Especially with children and young adults. It's also important when thinking to yourself.
Instead of saying "Don't run" you need to say "Stop. Please walk slowly" Since what they hear in the first case may be "Blah't RUN!"
or
instead of "Don't play around with knives"
say: "Playing with knives is dangerous and you will get in trouble"
cause all they'll hear is a suggestion to "Play around with knives"
You should try using a real Writing package... there is software out there that is much better for writing academic papers, much like there is better software for writing screen plays, novels, etc.
Office (and Word) is a general purpose package that tries to do everything and ends up not being great at anything.
Something simple like WriterPad or a more advanced options like Idea Rover which has specific features for Thesis writing.
Look around.... it's likely that there is a better tool for whatever you are doing. Which means that you can use something less powerful but more convenient for generic word processing.. such as Google Docs or Open Office, then switch to your Trade tool (Idea Rover or other) to do the real work.
Can we really afford to mine our last true archives of human history? Think of the generations from now who may not have historical landfills to excavate!
