If Microsoft were so sue and win (highly unlikely), they would basically be making a few martyrs, Evolution would have to change the look and feel slightly to something better, and it would be a small win for Linux.
If Microsoft were to lose the case, tons of bad press for Microsoft, not to mention the corporate world would suddenly know about a great alternative to Outlook, major win for Linux.

Anyway, don't you people here think that the money made from proprietary (open or closed) software sold for raw cash is what funds this industry? I mean, do you all want to work as sysadmins on Linux and databaseadmins on MySQL instead of software engineers & technical managers on projects that aim to sell the software you have created?

This is, of course, not taking into account software companies which hire programmers to work on LGPL'd code, companies which (live or die by Linux, such as IBM) hiring programmers to fix key bugs in GPL'd code, and companies which desire to compete with a GPL'd product by making a professional alternative.

People don't like choices... Linux on the otherhand is just a mass of choices.

If you sincerely, believe this is true, why are you posting anonymously? It is true there are people that don't like lingering long over tough decisions, doing due diligence on software before buying it. However, if having choice meant that people would avoid participation, then the stock market idea would have died long ago. After all, you have to spend some serious time studying money, finance, a companies' performance, etc. before buying a stock. And there are thousands upon thousands of stocks to choose from. And people that like to buy stocks without looking into it will suffer unless they get lucky in the stock market. The best part of Linux being a mass of choices, is it doesn't hurt to try out those "choices", since most of them are free.

Meaning your first choice may very well be Windows XP, followed by Windows 2000, followed by Windows 98, followed by Mac OS X, followed by Windows 95, followed by Mac Classic, followed by Linux, right?

Whoah, not the order I would choose! Mac OS X and Linux tied for first, Windows 2000 and Mac OS tied for second, Windows XP for third, and the Commodore 64 and Windows 98 get honorable mention! Mac OS X simply just runs everything. It's sometimes difficult to get the Linux/UNIX apps to run, and you've got to have an emulator to run the Windows apps, but with a great GUI and CLI put together, you've got total freedom in Mac OS X. But despite all that, the reason that I like Linux just as much is because,

    1. Linux has vastly superior free software bundled with it,

    2. The Mac OS is generally slower than Linux,

3.Developer support for Linux is slightly better, i.e. enough source code examples to last a lifetime,

    4. Mac OS booting into classic just takes too long when you switch user accounts often,

    5. You know you're free when you're on an Open Source OS,

    6. Even though it's not thoroughly polished and debugged, there are way more developers improving Linux, and I can definitely see it catching up to Mac OS X.
