Haven't you heard of progress through experimentation? Do you really think ANY musician in the world comes up with a perfect song off the top of their head?

Consider Jimi Hendrix trying to compose a song... He hits a few chords, and it sounds cool. He created something artistic out of random attempts, by using his artistic mind to discrimate between interesting sounds and uninteresting sounds.

If THAT doesn't fit in your definition of 'art', then your definition excludes half of Mankind's works of art.

Large developpers can't 'jump 6 levels of technology' either. That's why we saw the rise of the game engines like Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament.

If you want to make a kick-ass distro, do you need to recode your entire OS? What's the point? Take the source and tweak it. If you want to do a great game, take the engine and build on it.

I think the arrival of game engines as a standard in the industry is a reason why indy development has a lot more potential than before. But most 'indy developpers' are too proud of their 1337 skillaz and need to redo everything from scratch. And unfortunately, it usually sucks.

Myself, I can't wait for MMORPG engines or RTS engines. It sounds like the future of the industry.

I don't think he was creating an allegory. He was creating a fantasy world according to his own personal beliefs, and I think that makes perfect sense. So Gandalf was not an allegory for an archangel: he WAS an archangel, because in Tolkien's belief system, all world were created by God and would hold the same hierarchy of beings.

It's like creating a world with gravity... If it's at the core of your vision of reality, better make it consistent.

Actually, there are plenty of very Christian references in LotR. JRRT himself was very Christian. One example that comes to mind is the use of language for magic: every act of magic, whether from Gandalf or the Balrog, comes from the voice, since it was the belief of Tolkien that the Word was the founding principle of Creation. Additionally, Gandalf and the other wizards were more or less gardian angels. All this is detailed in the Silmarillion.

When you lose a bid, it's better to simply walk away. The last thing you want is to come across as a sore loser.

Rather, when a NEW bid is made, this is the time to show off strong by pointing out that your solution is secure, compared to ASP/NT. If they read that and still don't pick you, then *gasp* perhaps security is not that big of a concern for them.

Whining after you lost is just bad.
