Usability differs for different tasks. For some tasks, I WANT a program that utilizes "cli switches" so that I can use a script to automate it. Likewise, storing configuration information in a "config file" allows me to easily back up that configuration as well as inspect it if something goes wrong. I make a backup copy of important config files before I edit them so I can get back to a working configuration by overwriting the config file with its backup if^H^H when I screw something up.
You can't say anything about usability without knowing use cases. For server software, I would always prefer a config file over a gui control panel.
Sugar is NOT C++; It's written in Python. The person in the video mentions that in order to develop for android, you need a different system that doesn't run android. In other words, you couldn't develop for the machine ON the machine. It's a very important point since one of the goals of OLPC is to encourage tinkering.
I haven't seen an iPhone transfer, so I have nothing to compare the android sync to, but whatever little settings that must be adjusted are a small price to pay to avoid iTunes (which doesn't run on my OS of choice anyway.)
Still, I've heard perfectly reasonable people say that they actually like iTunes, so YMMV:-)
I'm a bit of an android junkie who reads several android sites and forums and I've never heard of this problem. It seems that it's very rare and very difficult to reproduce.
I skimmed through a portion of the comments and many were of the form "ZOMG! I'm thinking of getting an Android phone but won't do it until this is fixed." Not bug reports at all.
It doesn't seem likely that this person has seen the way flash works in the Android browser. You can set it to "on demand" and only see flash content when you click on it. Otherwise, it's just an empty box with an icon in it. You only see the "intrusive ads" if you specifically ask for them.
My android phone does a similar same thing, but wirelessly (and automatically). When you sign in to your google account with your new phone, your contacts are synced and all of your applications are re-downloaded from the android market.
The best selling single android phone to date is the original Motorola droid (a high end smartphone). So, I don't think that you can say that the primary target demographic for android phones is "cheap".
I have an honest question, so please don't take offense. What is with using the word "anymore" as a synonym for "now". You've used it twice in this post and I'm seeing it more frequently on forums and in e-mails. I'm not trying to be a grammar nazi, I really want to know where that comes from.
The story headline was "Exclusive: Microsoft Altered Windows Sales Numbers". I take the slashdot headline as questioning whether the story is completely accurate. Your beef appears to be with the story headline.
...it's much easier to pull up a menu and see my options than try to remember the exact name and spelling of a command that I haven't used in a year.
Tab completion on Linux systems makes remembering "exact name and spelling" mostly unnecessary. I understand your point about discoverability of options in a GUI utility, but that also limits the number of options that you can present the user without overwhelming them with checkboxes and drop down menus.
+1 insightful, but I would characterize the loaf as greyish-pink.
Nvidia has VP8 encode and decode in hardware.
You can't patch in hardware acceleration. It's either there or it's not. In the case of WebM, it's not.
Nvidia's Tegra 2 SOC (the darling of CES 2011) has VP8/WebM hardware encode and decode built in.
I too love Astrid, Asterisk, Astro, Asteroid, Astringent, Asperin-- whatever her name is.
They have to kill off good shows by moving them around as opposed to trying to build an audience. Remember "Arrested Development?"
The canonical example of this would have to be "Firefly". Cancelled and then became the #1 best selling DVD set on Amazon.

Android just isn't a good fit for OLPC.
Kindle does text-to-speech (if the publisher allows it). It's pretty awful. All hail our robotic overlords...
Makes me wonder why they use HDMI anyway..
Three little letters: DRM
Much of the "skyrocketing" marketshare is on cheap, lower-class phones can can barely run things.
Not according to this.

Over half of android phones are high end phones. That doesn't include the "other" segment of the pie chart which will include some high-end phones.
That's a pretty interesting observation.

Bravo, AC, Bravo!

Can someone with nerd cred de-troll parent? Oblivious moderation strikes again!
Every battery powered vehicle requires DC to charge it. If it doesn't appear to require DC then the transformer is in the vehicle.
Parent is a troll? Really?
Mods: "Troll" does not mean "I don't like what he said."
Is it just me or has moderation really gotten out of control lately?
