    Yeah AIM was what everyone at school used, and ICQ was what all the online gamers used back in the day since it had a file transfer function first. The fog horn and "uh oh" sound effects of ICQ will be burned in my memory, much more distinctive (although probably more annoying to many) than the modern chimes and bings.

    The way it is done now almost works... you watch a bit of the viral video and then a little ad interruption occurs. If the video starts as an ad, I would guess most people will just keep on scrolling.

    So a guy appointed by Trump did not experience pressure from Trump to act as he wanted, whereas Obama did apparently exert pressure on the FCC to act as he wanted? That's a roundabout way of not associating Trump with actions performed by the people he put in place to do things...

    Oh I'm not judging them, I've grabbed tossed solid wood furniture to repurpose. It is just amusing how quickly things you can't get anyone to take off your hands unless you pay them go away when you post it on Craigslist. Back in college I helped a friend pick up a broken down fridge that he was going to convert to a kegorator. The little old lady would've had to pay to have it hauled away otherwise.

    +1, "free" on Craigslist for anything will mean it is gone by the end of the day. Old broken mattress with a stain and springs poking out the side? Trash doesn't want it, charity can't take it, but some guy will be tying it to the roof of his subcompact with twine in an hour.

    At first I was thinking the first few to get this done to them before it became commonplace would be hosed, but I suppose it makes sense that first it'll be celebrities with lawyers and PR staff to handle it. So I guess the only impact on "regular folks" is that this is AI/Automating away the porn jobs!

    It's still a big point of failure... its a muscle that needs to work constantly or you die. So bereft of anything else killing you like a lion or falling anvil, a critical organ under constant strain is a good bet. Next up, cellular regeneration failure with cancer.

    An academic lab doesn't really have manpower to spare, even if it is compensated. Probably can't charge them enough to keep an FTE around.

    My understanding is that it is being used increasingly to harass researchers at public universities since it takes resources from them to respond. Pesky scientists researching the dangers of your new crabgrass spray? FOIA! Hardcore fundy looking to stick one to those evilutionists? FOIA! Of course the poor climatologists get a bunch, sometimes even from GOPs in congress.

    Oh I do agree with you that he should be prosecuted, and that we do need to reach a phase where people trust said prosecutions enough not to overreact and demand resignations from anyone accused. But when discussing a theocrat that was kicked off the supreme court twice who locals kept an eye on at the mall, etc... its like finding a guy in a hoodie with a brace n bit and a wrecking bar in your back yard. Whether or not you have him dead to rights and the law catches up to him or he skates, he's still a skeevy ne'er do well.

    I don't really bother weighing myself, but... it wouldn't be any effort to weigh yourself after your alarm clock goes off in the morning and after you relieve yourself to get a pretty decent measure. Don't most people keep the scale in the bathroom anyhow?

  24. Maybe it is just from growing up with grunge and other music that tried to eschew being commercial, but whenever I hear pop/country music I am shocked at the amount of product placement in it. Also shows where they used to use fake brands or turn the products away from the camera miraculously always have the logos pointed straight at the active camera. I had thought they filmed those simultaneously and cut it together from different angles in post but some poor bastard was making sure that beer bottle logo was visible every angle...

    Sure, but it ought not have any more ripple effect than if they'd spent it on Battlefront II loot boxes. They basically spent the money on the bitcoins already and you can't leverage those for anything like an equity loan so the money is already gone and they're playing pretend looking at numbers on the computer. Instead of getting to unlock Darth Vader they just get nothing.
