His article was shockingly poorly researched when you consider the following factual blunders:

    4) all the unix parts of the system REQUIRE linefeeds not carriage returns, so he got it completely backwards. Moreover, since OS9 a majority of mac apps are agnostic about carriage return versus linefeed (or both), so as to be Microsoft compatible.

    3) Whether the file system is case-sensitive or not is a setting the user can choose. So if developers care then it does not matter.

    2) moreover if you are developing for linux in a VM as he says then it will be case preserving on the linux partition or VDI anyhow so this issue never even arises.

    1) Apple's File system is called HFS+ , not AFS (which stands for Carnegie Mellon's Andrew File system). The remote access protocol is called AFP but it's hardly a "default" since one can substitute SAMBA or NFS just as easily.

Of course here is some inconvenience i reselling. On the other hand I can also buy a lot more books at one time for the same price and keep them till I'm ready to read. Conveience to me is being able to toss a book in my airplane bag or beach bag. I'm not taking my kindle to the pool or the beach. I'm not going to leave it outside on the patio table while I go take a pee or refill my drink. And I'm certainly not parking it beside the piss pot, or taking it in the bathtub with me. Besides, being old school, I find there's a great deal of visceral nature to books that somehow is part of the reading. Even being able to dog ear a page or write in the margins of certain kinds of books is a very good way to use them effectively. Not to mention...convenient.

If you need to program or present calculations wou want a big screen and big KB anyhow, plus a fast CPU and battery to match. So it's gonna be bigger. Net books only need slow cpus right?

If this is true I do not expect to see larger penises as the result. In fact, given the brain-penis balance displayed by your post the proteins should be working to reduce your penis size.

While your post is humorous, the funny thing is the original poster had a point. If the only thing keeping my penis small is a feedback loop, then it should not be too hard to create a drug that interrupts that feedback loop. The downside of course is that still does not create the desired mutation in me. Nor even in my children since eggs are all created at a young age.

For things like compilations, there's a bunch of file opens, caching the compiler and loader, gobs of Mallocs, and so forth that probably intersect the OS. Then there's the driver and video layer tests that look at frames per second. Leopard had 2 to 4 times faster frames per second. then there's the supporting distro services. Tests of My SQL were 4 times faster on the mac. And then there's things like the optimzation of VMs like JAVA where again Leopard excels. THese are clearly optimization problem and can be improved. the purpose of comparing it against a mac is not simply to say "oh yeah mac is faster than unbuntu", but rather to give a bench that shows how much room for optimization ubuntu has. Conclusion is that in almost every aspect Ubuntu is severely unotimized. Since older Linux seemed to be more optimized it suggests that feature bloat is probably either screwing up the design of linux or no one is paying attention to optimizing those features.

Matt Black paint, applied to a mirror, does not result in a surface that reflects visible light. precisely my point. the black matte is many wavelengths thick in the visible. Radar has enormous wavelengths compared to the paint thickness. If black mat were 100th of a wavelenght thick then either 1) it would impedance match badly and therefore reflect 2) it would not be thick enough to absorb light.

Paint can certainly absorb photons, and translate the energy to a wavelength no longer recognizable as related to the source. duh. this is known in physics as "absorption".

When companies put "intel inside" on their advertisments and play the intel jingle that GET money from intel rather than giving it. But the truth is if they have an intel-inside they already paid for the kickback. It's called co-advertising and it helps bind the companies to Intel. If you are naughty you might not get the nice intel rebate. On the other hand they get the Intel logo on their products and that carries some weight for no-name brands.

In this case companies are not putting ipod's inside so there is no natural conduit for the company to pay dues to apple. But these companies would love to put an apple on threir products. So apple licences the Made for ipod slogan and everyone is happy.

Companies are not obligated to use it but many will see it's value and buy it. What's not to love.

the only thing vaguely evil is that it if it becomes important it could become a way to bind these companies to apple more tightly. Play favorites etc...

But no one ever said apple was a saint. The reason they get more respect than MS is that their products succeed because they are good and merit it. MS succeeds inspite of frequent shoddy products because they are better bussniess men. But being in bussiness itself is not evil.

Somehow the prosepect of dropping, washing or losing my computer scares me. Why should I want to have my computer so close. For the time being phone computer's are going to be slow. If I can tolerate slow then I can also tolerate mounting my desktop and data over the internet. Eventurally phone's will pick up in processor speed and may even sport video adapters, but by then network desktop mounting will also be fast. So i'm not sanguin about the phone as computer. I'd rather have a nice slim phone with long battery life in my trousers. All that phone needs to do for me is authenticate me back to my network server and render the local computer in to a kisok.

My vision of the future is that "trusted platform" computing will allow things like phones to carry just enough intelligence to run small java (or other platform independent) programs that can authenticate back to the host computer that they have vetted the local hardware and trust it. Establish a secure channel, and then let me mount my desktop.

Computers can become sealed kiosks. Ideally sealed in clear epoxy with a laser etched holographic seal visible inside, for a modicum of mildly hard to defeat physical security (Yeah nothing's perfect--security is an onion).

Let IBM or whomever I want to be my Host service provider take care of keeping my applications up-to-date and conflict free, remotebacking up my data, and upgrading my hard drive space as I need it. I can even add in processors dynamically if I'm doing some real computing

When I need something faster locally, well it aint going to be my phone. Maybe it will be an Xbox or mac-mini with my movie editor and photoshop.

ideally my phone will just authenticate me to the server and validate any local hardware, then get out of the way. the local hard ware can negotiate with the server for how much data it get's trusted with and the ratio to local to remote processing.

So no my phone wont be my computer. and if I leave it in my jean's and wash it I wont care.
