Oh, wait, what's that? we're in a recession? Could it be because people didn't want to do the work they were paid for?

Actually, I think it's because we've got a moronic, illegitimate President who's too busy playing war games in Iraq to care about things at home, and too eager to dole out more tax breaks for his billionare buddies to note that he's sending the country straight down the crapper. But that's probably just me, since I actually follow the news.

  8. Why not DRM? on Review of iTunes Music Store · · Score: 1

Who said Apple was opposed to DRM? They've supported Quicktime streams that cannot be saved for a while now.

It seems that what Apple is opposed to is excessively restrictive DRM. E.g., DRM that makes it a hassle for you to get your "fair use" out of the stuff. The new iTunes Music Store is an example of this -- honest users won't have any big roadblocks in their way, while determined pirates will find various hassles they'll have to work around. It's a compromise, not a one-sided solution.

Yeah, it's a bitch when I use my Mac and go on the internet -- I can only access Mac-compatable sites, and can't visit the other 95% that are written for Windows or Linux. Email's also a bitch, because everyone knows that it's all incompatable, and a Mac user can't send mail to a Windows user, or vice-versa. And don't get me started on JPEGs, MP3s, PDFs, or text files.

At least Apple was good enough to let my version of Appleworks read and write MS Word and MS Excel documents. And that new Keynote program of theirs imports and exports Powerpoint. Now if only Steve Jobs can get off his lazy ass and start making a Mac-compatable version of the internet.

True, but you're overlooking the fact that, prior to MacOS X, the "learning delta" between different releases of the MacOS was practically nil -- e.g., the user interaction between OS releases was small enough to be nonexistent, for a period of over fifteen years. In contrast, the differences between different versions of Windows oveer the same period was comparably greater (think DOS to Windows 3.1, and Windows 3.1 to windows 95 in particular), and occurred more frequently than what happened on the Mac side.

Yes, there's a big jump to go from MacOS 9.2 to MacOS X, but that's only because Apple wasted the fifteen years before MacOS X sitting on their ass with the same architecture and UI. The gap between MS-DOS and Windows XP is just as great (or, arguably, even greater), but you don't notice it because Microsoft broke it up into smaller pieces, which you've adjusted to every few years.

Don't get too excited about this, folks -- after all, based on initial announcements, even the Atari Lynx and the Atari Jaguar got support from big-name companies like Konami, Taito, and Electronic Arts (as the author of the FAQs for those systems, I ought to know). "Support" at this stage is nothing more than a codeword meaning "we'll be there if it takes off, but with an option to ignore it if it sinks." Sega gets a partial pass on this prediction, since they've got announced games for it already, but don't count your Soul Reavers until they hatch (or whatever it is soul reavers do)

I've only been toying with iMovie 3.0.1 (no current video projects, sorry), and for the most part, it's fine for me. I'm running a stock G3 450MHz iMac DV+ with 386MB of RAM.

Some of the functions are a bit slower -- the Ken Burns effect, while neat, takes a while to render -- but nothing has caused any crashes or been a showstopper. Titles, effects, and transitions are all as expected. I had a problem getting iMovie to recognize my iPhoto library for a while, but that was due to me using multiple iPhoto libraries, and I can't blame Apple for that. Haven't noticed any sync problems, though maybe that won't appear until I work on a larger video project.

My only concern so far are the scattered reports that iMovie 3 won't export to digital/analog converter boxes -- I've got a Sony converter for the job, and if iMovie 3 borks with it, I'm hosed. But to be fair, Apple has been historically good at responding to major showstopper bugs in their software, and I wouldn't be surprised if iMovie 3.1 shows up in a week or three to address the avalanche of complaints.

As others have said, Mac users tend to take forever before they buy a new computer. That's why I always take those "computer marketshare" stats with a big grain of salt, since they only count the number of new boxes Apple/IBM/Dell/Compaq sell in each quarter. Since Mac owners don't update their stuff as frequently as Windows folks do, the Apple userbase looks smaller as a result.
