Some clarification: I'm not saying I agree with the position. I was just adding some clarification. And the 5x per week was a bit of an exaggeration.
If you really want to see the assholes the cops have to deal with, call your local PD and schedule a ride-along. Cops allow citizens to go out with them on patrol so they can see first hand the crap they have to put up with. Then you'll better appreciate why some cops are assholes - it rubs off on them.
First, nobody is talking about live surveilance in homes. He's talking about all the times that cops get called out to domesic violence 5 times per week to the same house. Put a closed circuit camera in the house with a padlocked VHS recorder. That way its no longer he-said-she-said...
People have NO IDEA the type of assholes cops have to deal with.
Look, the totalitarian government of Soviet Russia could not withstand the spread of information brought about by faxes, the result? Gorbachev implemented Glastnost and the iron curtain fell shortly thereafter.
China is largely rural and many areas are getting cell phone coverage before they even had land lines. With the advent of the internet, the name of the game here is to get them ACCESS to information. Once the information flows start to happen, there will be NO STOPPING THEM, the horses will have gotten out of the barn. Let the internet reach ubiquity in China and once it does to the point of the government not being able to "Shut it off", then the restraints on access to information will fall away because the information will ALWAYS find a way into the hands of the people seeking it - and the result is that China will be forced to relax its internal rule sets to cope with the changing world.
These rule set changes are ones that CANNOT come from within China, they must come from the outside world. The most recent rule-set change that I can think of came from SARS. The closed society of China just about caused a complete disconnect from the world economy because they refused to share information with the World Health Organizaiton. The WHO banned all flights originating from or destined to certain regions of China. Last time I was there I was approached and had my temperature taken; if I had a fever, I didn't get on that plane - I had just won 3 day extended vacation, all expenses paid...by me. This is a rule set that NEVER would have come from China internally.
How the information is flowing right now is completely secondary to the fact that it IS beginning to flow, which is the most important factor in this equation. All this "evil censorship" won't last.
Management is powerless to stop Bureaucracy, they're part of the problem. Most CEO's are responsive to issues that have a direct impact on the bottom line. I would say that you take that exact posting that you have here on/. and submit it to your president anonymously if you desire.

This is what you get when you have the educational system indoctrinating students instead of teaching them.
I teach college, the students coming in; their brains are mush. They're not stupid, they've just never been taught anything. I have to teach them that assignment deadlines are DEADLINES and not recommendations for completion date.
They've never had to work before. They're intellectually lazy.
So, if this comment is modded down -2 Troll, or even worse, Flamebait, Not only do I lose Karma, but Slashdot will automatically execute a FileFederalLawsuit script?
And that underscores my point. I can see things, the NSA can see things. Neither of us acts on the information that we see. Therefore, what's the difference?
Now add the ONE missing variable which is the NSA will DO SOMETHING when they happen to come across terrorist activity wherein a known terrorist is communicating with someone outside the United States.
Its not even the UNITED STATES that the NSA is monitoring, thats the jurisdiction of the FBI. The NSA is monitoring traffic OVERSEAS wherein they get a conversation of Alice, US Resident phoning her brother Bob who currently lives in the EU. They also get Ahmed phoning back to Mohammed where Ahmed is in the USA and is a known terrorist.
Regardless, the volume of data is so immence that no human could process it, all these voice conversations are anaylzed by computers, and only specific ones are sent for human intel review.
All Bush did was say "Don't pretend like you didn't see that".
Why and how would I lose my job? I configure routers that pass traffic. In order to perform traffic shaping I need to capture traffic to see what types of traffic are traversing the network.
I see crap all the time, its part of my job. Because I do not work for law enforcement, I am not constrained by information gathering techniques that are put in place to govern law enforcement.
A cop has to have a legitamate reason to pull a background check on someone. As a citizen, I can pull records on anyone I want for any reason I want.
Have you ever done a packet capture? You get everything traveling across the wire, then you have to filter out what you don't want to look at in order to focus in on the traffic you WANT!
Remember Carnivore? It was nothing more than a packet capture program that would ONLY capture traffic that you had a warrant for, essentially a reverse packet capture. There was such an outcry about the FBI using Carnivore that they scrapped it and used {gasp} ethereal!
When the NSA monitors traffic traversing transoceanic cables, they capture all the data; emails, voice traffic, internet traffic, everything! THEN they drill in on the conversation they're trying to monitor.
I've worked at ISP's, I've arbitrarily monitored traffic passing through internet backbone links, I've seen unencrypted data flying through the pipe, tons of it, and I don't need a search warrant to monitor your data. Its your fault you didn't encrypt it.
So, I guess you could say that I am worse than ANY of the NSA agents! In fact, every single damned ISP is 100,000x worse than any NSA agent because we have NO constraints on what we do with the information. I can send in anonymous tips about a drug deal being planned via email or IM, they can't. I can notify a wife about a cheating spouse.
You have NO privacy anyway, get over it. Anyone that thinks they have any privacy just doesn't know where to look for their information.
DES stands for Data Encryption STANDARD, and the standard has changed, or rather the standard has been evolving. There used to only be 56 bit DES, then 168 bit called 3DES, now there are more types of encryption that have been accepted into the Data Encryption Standard.
Your comment is akin to saying that Ethernet is only 10 meg or 100 meg. If your going to refer to 1000 MB/Sec transfer rates, then it is GIGABIT. Uh, it's all Ethernet...
For clarity, they refered to AES, the Advanced Encryption Standard as the forthcoming replacement for DES. Now that AES has been adopted, it is now part of the DES standard and we now have 256 DES on up.
At first I thought it said Elbonia successfully had internet voting. I was actually amazed that the pointy-haired boss didn't manage to screw it all up and I eagerly awaited the cartoon panels that detailed Dilbert's success in deploying the systems...

So, let me get this straight about Nagin and his expletive filled rant today. This moron of a mayor can't get his city evacuated or prepared in 3 days BEFORE the storm hits and the levees break but everyone is supposed to come from around the country and do it in 20 minutes after the place is broken by the storm and floods?
This is what passes for 'leadership' in that city (which by all reports was barely under control in the best of times)?
Disgusting. I think Nagin's performance leading up to this is boarder line criminal. I bet in the aftermath we are going to find a lot of money that was supposed to be used for disaster preparedness went 'missing'.
It is very important that the country be able to distinguish Democratic blather from reality after this calms down. As far as I can see, Bush and the feds did everything by the book, as soon as danger was coming. The mayor of N.O. did absolutely NOTHING to prepare for this.
Drudge is currently showing a parking lot full of flooded school buses. Why weren't they sent through neighborhoods to pick people up? Why was the Superdome not stocked with at least minimal supplies? I have no answer, but I think when this is analyzed that the local government will be the culprit. But for now, the Dems are going to make every effort to make Bush look bad. Political posturing during a tradgedy is something I find simply disgusting.
All I have heard on the news is blaming the Feds for slow response to New Orleans.
But the preparation and execution of an evacuation of New Orleans in the event of such a disaster (which has ALWAYS been a possibility... a known issue) lies squarely on the municipal and state government... not the Feds.
It's so easy for the N.O. mayor and the LA governor to blame the Feds. It takes the spotlight off them and their incompetence. Just compare their preparation and response to other cities like NYC, SanFran and LA to their disasters.
But... eventually, a post mortem on all this will occur... and I think the N.O. mayor and the LA governor's incompetence will come into full view.
In the meantime, the Feds have basically taken over Louisiana and New Orleans... as they have no effective, competent government.
When Northridge earthquake took place; did everyone sit around waiting for the feds to come rescue them? Hell no, people pulled together and helped each other. In NOLA, people pulled together and... helped themselves to some new shoes and whatever else they could get their hands on. Now we're going to see endless news reels of these "poor helpless criminals" who "couldn't help themselves".
The RED CROSS has said that they were holding back on delivering food until they had adequate armed escorts to protect them going into this war zone.
