I think this is necessary, although I'm kind of surprised that the American authorities allow this kind of surveilance. I would have thought that they were too proud (for their own good). But I'm really really really glad this is happening, and hope this election will turn out better than the last one (in terms of counting votes). And of course, I hope every/. reader will go out and vote.
For the record: I am not an American, so my opinion are not completely unbiased.
While I'm waiting for the server to recover, I'd like to post on of my favorite quote from the book, something I cannot picture getting a cross in the movie.
"The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't"
Even though N-Gage QD has it's own SDK, I find it terribly sad that it only supports MIDP 1.1 and not MIDP 2.0 (improvements between the versions are mostly game related). I'm currently developing apps with the 2.0 lib, and the lack of support for it is reason enough for me not to buy an N-Gage.
If I take all the data from all my computers, it's not even close to a TB. And of course if I only count the space used for email, it's only a tiny tiny tiny fraction of a TB. So I wonder, why would you need this (except for file-sharing/warez of course)?
Information like this has been needed for a long time, there are plenty of HowTo's and Man pages around, but not much information to help with the actual transfer from Windows to Linux. Good job IBM.
The other day I had to look up a missed call from my cellphone. Now, there is a pretty good online phonebook for my country (Iceland), but the number was not found. So I googled it (yes, it has become a verb), and google found it. Turns out it was a direct line to an employee of a company (who's main number was registered in the phonebook).
I use google every single day, life just wouldn't be the same without it.
Is it even possible to carry two assault rifles simultaneously in real life? sounds a bit heavy...
Well, you can carry two, but if you're gonna shoot somebody you might wanna put one of them down first.
Courtney Love wrote a good article on how much money major label artists actually get. It's a lengthy piece with quite a few mathematical (read: money calulations) explanations on how major label artists are getting screwed, pardon my french, by the major labels.
I once read that in order to get one teaspoon of creatine from food, you'd have to eat 1+ kg of raw beef. So much for the "you can get all those substances by eating healthier food" theory.
Can we demand that regular Joe's take responsibility for their computer, and their computers security? That is to say, should we be responsible for ensuring that others cannot access our computers and do illegal deeds with it?
Now, that would require way more knowledge IT security than the regular Joe has, however it might cause the public to demand a more secure OS etc.
Actually I remember getting the same match when searching for "C++ pointers" I pointed this out to a lot of friends and they all had a good laugh, however amazon seemed to pick up on it because later that same day the matches were normal again.
"Eligibility. NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. To be eligible for the Slashdot T-Shirt Design Contest (the "Contest"), you must: (i) be eighteen (18) years of age or older; and (ii) be a legal resident of the United States."
Why the heck is this limited to US residents?

I'm surprised the noone has mentioned Alan Turing.
"...quadrilaterals that carve out the face so that when you crop, you are left with exactly the face.." Sounds like a nasty procedure

Please email resident applications to me.

I'm using dual boot Gentoo/WinXP on my laptop, without problems.

Are you implying that my hardware is really ok and not responsible for all these crashes? *gasp*

I'd like to believe that a good browser is a must in order to be able to take over the desktop.
