Hitchhiker's Guide Trailer Online

Jeremy Rayner writes "The 2005 Hitchhiker's movie trailer is available in AVI or RealMedia formats. The movie trailer doesn't reveal anything, but looks cool. Personally I'm looking forward to the new Radio 4 series in September for which you can hear an mp3 preview."

      WHen talking about this trailer, I completely agree with you, no reason to use real format at all.

      When talking about streaming video, the AVI file format is serious not suited for it (for once because of having the index at the end of the file and needing that index to navigate through the file, somethign which is not needed for either mpg or real formats.

      I do not know about ogg, it might support this correctly and that'd allow using xvid for streaming.

      I believe Taco meant that the trailer is more like a teaser, in that no actual footage from the movie is being shown.

      It only took me about 3 minutes...it slowed down near the end to about 20kBps, but that's not too bad.

      I know... I was hoping people would be distracted by the new poll, so went straight for saving the movie file. Started at abour 120k/s, finished around 27k/s. :)

      As the article says, there's not much content beyond the exploding earth and "don't panic" message. Still, I'm a big hitch-hikers fan, and it gave me goosebumps. You can go stick your Star Wars prequel, I don't care anymore. I just hope they don't go and f%ck up this film!

      The AVI is downloading way faster than the real media. I clicked on both and it was 15 minutes vs. 15 hours.

      The trailer itself is definitely just a teaser, shows off some nice but not terribly groundbreaking CGI. It'll build some hype among those who weren't aware it was coming. The logo's pretty cool, incorporating elements of earlier logos while still being new and different.

      One of the things Ford Prefect had always found hardest to understand about humans was their habit of continuously stating and repeating the very very obvious, as in It's a nice day, or You're very tall, or Oh dear we seem to have slashdotted the server!

      I could not disagree more strongly. Please, if you are so inclined, feel free to execute your right to not vote. Especially if you are one of those people who got all their information for TV attack ads and Daily Show comedy skits, and think you are expected to choose between "the lesser of two evils" in this election. Stay home and relax. An uninformed vote does far more damage to the country than an apathetic citizen ever could.

      And what if you think they're ALL idiots? Why vote for somebody who doesn't deserve it? You're only giving them a mandate to do things you don't agree with, which is madness.       I suspect the reason the servers are dying is that they aren't "officially hosted." According to the movie blog, the trailer was released only on DVD to attendees of Comic-Con in San Diego.

      Then go an cast an empty ballot, which at least counts for something. You don't get to vote on just the Presidential race, there are other things on the ballot, including, in many states, counties and cities initiatives that can seriously impact your life, don't tell me you don't have opinions on those.

      Pssst. Here's a secret... There's no such thing as an informed vote.       Did anybody actually think about what either Bush or Gore would do in response to a terrorist attack, when we USians were arguing about hanging chads in 2000?

    That didn't give me a good feeling. Stylish, sure, but a bit lacking in substance. I hate the way they just stuck "42" in the corner without any reason. It's like they thought they'd just chuck it in for "geek cred", even though it makes no sense. I hope the whole film isn't like that; lots of style, no substance, and the occasional thing that doesn't really makes sense, but attempts to make fans feel clever for noticing it.

      I'll take some slight exception here. While putting things where they don't belond is half of what makes HHGG funny it takes the other half to make it actually funny. It wasn't the mere presence of the whale that was funny, "Oh, look, there's a whale out of place," it was the way the way the whale was handled after it appeared that made it funny. The spaceship in Wembley Stadium wasn't funny, it was the Somebody Else's Problem Field that was funny.

      That was one of the problems with Dirk Gently. The Chesterfield on the stairway was out of place, but it wasn't funny because it was just there, and that's only half the game.

    The Hitchhiker story is so bizarre that I always found my imagination made the books much funnier than the radio drama and the TV show. I'm not sure how excited I am about the movie, since live action just can't seem to match the absurdities that the imagination seems to be able to grasp so well.

      What I have done is listen to the Audio Books"> read by Douglas Adams himself.
      It gives you that much extra, because you hear what the author wants you to hear, instead of only the text.
      It still leaves enough to the imagination.

      What I did was ript it, so I had 5 CD's in my car, instead of the 25 and then listen to the mp3's. What else are you going to do when waiting in traffic?
      Note that the prices are in UK money.

      I heard the radio series before the book was available. My whole schedule was twisted and warped so that I wouldn't miss a single minute. It was awesome. I also enjoyed the books. The TV show, on the other hand, was seriously lame.

      Radio leaves plenty of room for imagination.

      It isn't a given that any story will work better in any given medium. For instance Star Wars, the movie, totally blew me away when I first saw it. I'm not even remotely interested in reading the book.

      Although, while I don't know for myself, I have heard that the Star Wars radio drama was phenomenal. Haven't had a chance to check it out myself, unfortunately.

      Well, as for the TV show, it may have been unfunny because it just turned out really, really bad. Though I did actually enjoy the even-cheesy-at-the-time special effects for the guide, Trillian ruined that whole damn thing for me.

      Yeugh! The audio books read by DNA are insufferable (IMO). It's got to be the original (i,e. radio) actors for my money. Thank heavens they're doing the last three books at last. (Near as dammit, given substitutes for stiffs.)

      IMO, the best format is the radio scripts. They are filled with commentary on how things evolved. It really adds to the humour. A couple things that I remember (it has been many years since I read it): Adams was maddly working on the script 5 minutes before going on the air. He wrote in another character so he had to pull in the janitor from the hall to read the part! At the end of one week's episode, he decided to throw our heros out of the airlock in order to add some suspense to the story. The following week he had to come up with a way to rescue them. Everything he thought of was just a lame "...and with one leap, Jack was free". No, he needed something really improbable...

      Yea film can't hold a candle to the imagination but I think the hardest part of translating the HHGG books into a movie is that Douglas Addams was a master in the use of personification and being able to change that into a visual format is near imposable in the way Addams used it. Despite that I still feel the original series, despite technological and financial limitations was a really fun series, even though there is little hope of fully rendering the subtle nuances Addams used in the books on film. Despite all the problems involved in bringing the Hitchhikers Guide to the silver screen I'm still looking forward to the movie (having not heard much about it over the past few years I was worried it might have been canceled after Addams death)I'm just angry I didn't get the chance to audition for the part of Ford Prefect.

      LOTR
      Spiderman
      Xmen
      High Fidelity
      Fight Club

      were approved for funding.

      Yes, sometimes movie adaptations of books can fail miserably, but there are some stunning success stories, and I for one am glad that there are people with faith enough to see them through over the objections of people such as yourself.

      Actually, I probably would have green-lighted any of those movies (except, perhaps, High Fidelity) without a moment's hesitation.

      Spider-Man and X-men, as comic books, are so visually oriented that it's only natural for them to be turned into movies; and, as a friend of mine once put it, "they rocked my face off." The world of LOTR is pretty fantastic, and I think most people would agree that it's a good thing that the movies were put off until the age of CG. I haven't read Fight Club, so I can't say much about it.

      But, as much as those movies deal with difficult to depict stories and concepts, none of them match the absurdities of the HHGTTG. So, if it were up to me, the movie wouldn't be attempted. But I'm just one of six billion people, so my opinion does no one any harm.

      In 2006, a film adaptation of Ender's Game is supposed to be released. Ender's Game is one of my favorite books, and I've always believed it would be extremely difficult for anyone to translate onto film the subtleties that make the book so good. But, on the movie's opening day, if that day comes, you can be sure I'll be in line to see it.

    And for those of you who aren't in the UK, you may appreciate knowing that Radio 4 make their programs available on their website for a week after the broadcast.

    Unfortunately they're still in crappy real media format, but mplayer deals with them fine.

    About time too :) - i've been looking forward to these for a long time, they were originally due to begin airing in February of this year but some licensing issues with the movie delayed that.

      went to the Bulldog(british style pub?) just up the street from this place about two years ago on my short trip from UK - I thought Beeblebrox was a strip joint or something so I never bothered going in (I know that statement doesn't make much sense) ... dammit

      anyway - there was a lass serving in the bar who was very cute n nice and I thought I'd share this with you.

      Best £1000ish pounds I've spent ... Ottawa is a cool place ... I'd like to go back for a longer visit ...

      I live 15 min from Beeblebrox in Ottawa - it is kind of a dump and there is a music club that Drew Barymoore owns just down the street. Also there usually this cowboy kind of guy who is alyways dancing by himself at Beeblebrox.

      I think that they are trying to get people to think that it is a serious movie, major fight scenes, incredible CG, and then... Marvin and Beblebrox. that or Have Ford in the elevator or something like that. Tip off the viewers that this is going to be freakin' hilarious right at the end of a real trailer.

      Except without any action. It's just a logo. That's why you are reminded of Men In Black, I think the trailer did something similar.

      I think it was appropriate here though - the Guide would certainly have a logo. The graphic style reminds me of some of the StarShip Titanic stuff.

      You're leaving out funny details, notably... it's:

      It's a little picky, but it's just that I found how the song got cut off was pretty funny.

      Sigh--the *only* things that are similar to MiB are the music--the french horns and tubas, and the cellos--and some of the camera movements, which are similar to the movements in the stinger from MiB (you know, with the marbles).

      The rest has almost nothing to do with MiB or action films.

      Besides, you've gotta remember--this preview is running before I, Robot and The Bourne Supremacy and all of the other summer action films. I doubt that testosterone-fueled moviegoers would be likely to see a film based on thirty seconds of Marvin the Maniacally-depressed Robot whinging on about life, or Slartibartfast yammering on about fjords.

      Actually, I strongly disagree. I was really very glad to see the mock-serious nature of the trailer. Playing it straight is the best way to make it funny. Airplane!, Men In Black, whatever - the straighter it is played, the funnier it is in my opinion.

      So how many years will be until we see a big explosion in a movie that DOESN'T have that silly flat ring?

      Even Lucas stuck it into the hacked up version of Star Wars, to me this effect is far more trite than anything ripped off from The Matrix.

      Other than that, though, I hope the movie does the books service. Somehow I could never imagine the Hitchhiker books as anything other than books, a radio show or a low-budget British TV production. I hope the special effects don't upstage the story.

      I noticed the same thing. Freecache mentions on its homepage that that they can exclude certain sites and files, but I'm not sure why they'd exclude this one. Maybe free.fr as a whole is excluded for some reason?

      When I was a kid I loved The Hitchhikers Guide. One thing that made an impression on me was the bit about always having a clean towel when you travel. Funny how things stick in your head.

      About 10 years ago my wife and I spent a month back packing around Europe. Since we had we had to carry everything we went very light, but I still remembered to pack a towel for me and although she didn't want to I made her take one for her.

      They came in handy almost every day. She thought I was wise. There is nothing better after you have been walking for three days straight and took a "sink bath" in a little train station in the middle of Italy then to pull a clean folded towel out of your backpack.

      People look at you differently too. No matter how bad you look or smell, all of the sudden you are ok. You're not a "bum" anymore. You are civilized.

      On the last day, when we flew home, I bought several bottles of expensive wine. We wrapped them in our towels and they all made it home ok.

My download started around 80 k/s, but now it's around 5. I think the server is saying mercy, so I'm going to let go and wait till later.

      At least the movie blog and credentials are promising. The Hammer and Tongs guys who are doing it are spoken of very favourably by Spike Jonze, Jay Roach, etc. In a way I have more hope just because they are new to features, have everything to prove, and are likely less encumbered by the studio than bigger names.

      I agree. My personal favourite is near the start of LU&E (are there official acronyms for the other books?) when Zaphod is talking to Trillian about freedom. He downs one drink, then another to make sure it's all right, then a third to check on the both of them. Then a fourth one down the other throat to head them off at the pass, etc. Classic...

      Of course without at least a spoken dialogue you'd lose all of that. You'd just see him drink 6 glasses, three in each mouth. Bleh.

While my first impression was "that doesnt look like I imagined at all!", after thinking about it, it makes perfect sense. Why should a huge intergalactic corporation with a marketing department large than certain nebulas we won't mention design a personality prototype and not make it horribly cute?

      I recommend you pick up a cheap paperback copy of the first book - it's a pretty short read, and I swear that I laughed my ass off when I read it. When I got to the end, I flipped back to the first page and started reading again.

      I think that's the only book I've ever done that with.

    I really want to see how they pull this off. I've been rereading the books lately, I'm just partway into "So Long" now. Never read Mostly Harmless or "Young Zaphod plays it Safe" before, so that'll be fun.

    I just read the part where Ford sits waiting for the Guide to be updated, and it says something about him waiting for 15 years of his work-life to dissappear into the ether. I couldn't help thinking of todays .com cyber-employees, and the parallel. Perhaps it was somewhat prophetic, perhaps it's just exactly improbable enough.

    Offtopic, I went to Borders and bought the "leather" bound "Complete Hitchhikers Guide". It's got all the books in one, seemed like a deal to me. I noticed on the spine of this tome, it lists this "Young Zaphoid Plays it Safe".

    Zaphoid! How does a typo like that pass the publisher? The story is spelled wrong on the spine of the book.

    Anyhow, movie or not, encourage people to read the books. There's so much wit and puns and wordplay that just couldn't translate onto the screen.

      From personal experience at least, reading the book just before seeing the movie makes the movie seem much worse about 85% of the time.

      Keep that book though, typographical errors in published works can mean a collectible value in the future.

      Maybe I'm remembering "Young Zaphod plays it Safe" wrong, but it seems like it was pretty funny. Wasn't that the one where he sat on the dead body, so he switched to the spare suit (mechanical suits that walked around on their own), and then proceeded to puke inside of it when he saw the mess on the back of the first suit?

      Not up to the caliber of the books (certainly nothing can compare to the first HHGTTG book), but it was a decent little short story, in my opinion.

      But yeah, this should be amusing, since people like to bash movies based on the books that came before them. In this case it's a bit different, as the radio plays were actually first, and the books came after. Many are likely to forget that in this massively cross-media story, very little can be taken as canon.

      As long as the dialogue style fits properly, I'll be happy. I'm more keen on the continued radio series than the movie anyhow.. Nice to see they've got a lot of the original cast in it.

      I first tried the avi with Windows Media Player; it went off looking for a codec and finally decided it couldn't download one, which sounds like what's happened to you. I found it worked fine with the free divx player, so maybe this will help you, too?

    The second radio series was quite different than the books, and was better in my opinion (perhaps because I heard it before I read the books).

    The end of the second radio series had Arthur taking off in the Heart of Gold after discovering Zaphod's part in the destruction of Earth, leaving Ford and Zaphod stranded with the ruler of the universe, and Trillian had disappeared near the end of the first series (forcibly married to the Algolian Chapter of the Galactic Rotary Club, from memory).

    The end of the second book had Arthur and Ford still stranded on prehistoric Earth (where they had been at the end of the first radio series).

    I'm hoping that the third radio series will continue from where the second radio series left off, and not just follow the books.

    I don't hold much hope for the movie ... the TV series was pretty awful.

      According to the small making of documentary . The radio series will be an adaptation of the remaining 3 books in the 5 part Trilogy. As opposed to an extension of the original radio series.

      It sounds like this radio series includes Arthur and Ford appearing in the Cricket match on the Chesterfield, which would seem to imply that it goes by the books rather than the old radio series. (Otherwise Ford and Arthur wouldn't be together.)

      I hope they manage to link it with the old radio series somehow though. On the other hand, I've always loved the Chesterfield scene on prehistoric Earth.

      As for the movie and TV series, the main things I thought were awful about the TV series were Trillian's voice and the special effects. Anyway, the movie production has nothing to do with the TV series production, so the comparison doesn't make much sense.

    I heard it on the radio,
    read it in the book,
    saw it on stage at the Rainbow,
    cringed at the TV series,
    played the records,
    read the book of radio scripts.
    I've eaten the soup and worn the T-shirt.

    The original material, particularly the books was funny. It still is funny. I think I've read the first book 20 times and laughed every time, but in slightly different places. Listening to the radio series with those amazing radiophonic-workshop effects makes any visual representation redundant so I can't understand what us old-timers will get from the film. Either it will be the original, but watered down to fit the film length, or it will be new, not DNA, but with a few in-jokes.

    I think the film must be targeted at a new audience. They've heard this theory about 42 being the answer but never been exposed to the original joke. 42 is there to whet their appetites, not mine.

    So I can't say I have been waiting 24 years to see it on the big screen. I'll wait until it arrives on a small one in my living-room. Can it be worse than "Mostly Harmless"?

    So several years ago when I was several feet shorter I spent all my money on the box set of the tapes of the original series and both tapes were there and they had a little cardboard box with the primary cover on the front and secondary on the back. Now what am I supposed to do with it? Make a little pyramid out of it? If it wasn't for the fact Im getting something great from the BBC I would be pissed that my cardboard carton is now totally useless.

      I installed the xvid codec and it worked great.

      Started to install the divx 5.2 codec and only got as far as the license terms. No F*g way I'm agreeing to banners!

      Yeah, I should have done xvid myself. I believe the divx banner thing is only for the player that comes in the bundle which you don't even have to install. I installed just the codec. 13 media players are enough for me already.

      I have no idea about IV41. I'm not too into video, just enough to want to play some trailers/teasers.

      Well, as you can see from the link Adams sold H2G2 to the BBC, who now use it as an all singing all dancing community. Along the lines of what Douglas originally wanted for the site, it has become an encyclopedia for everyone to have an entry. In fact, the engine that drives H2G2 is called DNA (after Douglas). And in 2005 DNA will drive all of the BBC message boards. Which is quite a cool development to come out of Adams' work. I never heard about this PDA idea, but its a pretty fun one. And these days could be achieved with almost any PDA and a mobile/wifi device. In short, if you want a program to look at h2g2 go right ahead and write one ;)

    Amazingly, the realmedia file is willing to be downloaded!
    That either speaks to:

    RealMedia's status as the unwanted step child in the video codec world.

    ...about movies based on imaginative books like this is that the movies always ruin the characters which have only ever been in my imagination. While I'm rereading the book the "new" versions of those characters are always those of the actors who played them in the movie. It's never quite the same again.

    I always pictured Marvin to be a taller, leaner, and darker robot that sort of looked like Bender from Futurama, and I liked him like that. After I watch the movie, my version of Marvin will be a short, fat, white robot with a hugh head. That version doesn't appeal to me but it will be the version I'll be thinking of when I reread the books.

      I think many people are imagining Marvin based on his radio-series voice, which is melancholy and deep-pitched. It's natural to associate a deep-pitched voice with a large person -- hence people's surprise at seeing Marvin visualized a dwarf-sized robot (which they would expect to have a high, squeaky voice)

      I think, as others have mentioned, that he _should_ look like a new fangled Honda robot because he is, in the beginning of the books, a new fangled Sirius Cybernetics robot. I'm sure that as the story progresses he will become battered and decrepit.

      Remember that he's supposed to have been designed by marketing dweebs.

      I wasn't so sure that I liked the design at first, but I think that it's a pretty good go at what Marvin should look like. He'll look really, really pathetic when he needs to.

      I can't remember exactly, but didn't Marvin get his peg leg in a later book? I think it was after Ford, Arthur, et al. left him in the ship that was flying into the sun (after they left the restaurant at the end of the universe). Hard to say what order things happened in in those books, though, what with all of the skipping about in spacetime.

      Regardless of the continuity issues, though, this Marvin doesn't look like what I've always pictured - I saw him as taller and metallic, with a more squarish head.

      Maybe the cute plastic Marvin will work. I'll wait till I see the movie and then form an opinion. I serously doubt that I'll get the kind of enjoyment out of the movie that I got from the books!

    I just watched the teaser and I can honestly say that I expect the movie to be absolute crap. The style of the teaser is devoid of hint of humour (british or otherwise). The hollywood grassfuckers couldn't leave well enough alone, just like when they had to make an american version of 'Priscilla, Queen of the desert', just to americanize the humour forthe masses.

    In addition to a new title for Episode III, San Diego Comic-Con attendees were treated to a Comic-Con-only debut of THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY teaser trailer this weekend. Don't Panic!     The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy starring Mos Def as Ford Perfect is expected to be released in the US in early June 2005.

    It is going to be crap because for some reason hollywood thinks it needs an overwhelming soundtrack for a comedy like this! Fuck, it's a BRITISH COMEDY, not some Will Smith turd.

    The knack is in the subtlety if the adventure, not a seat of your pants thrillride!!

    Man, this is gonna suck if that's what they think is needed for a trailer.

    Not to put to fine a point on it, but the radio series were there first, and my own respect for the original will therefore always prefer them over the books. Much like Kirk will always be the true captain.

    Or am I now stating the obvious like most humans do.
