I will agree with the parent post on this... Intel may not have the price/performance ratio that everyone likes... but the chipset selection for AMD servers (w/ respect to stability) just sucks... I've managed a pair of Athlon based servers... they weren't as stable as the Intel system adjacent to them (A P3)... and all 3 were using the same peripherials... only motherboard/cpu/ram type were different about the systems... VIA - nice features, good performance, crap stability.. I hate the Via chips on this MSI board with my Duron.. stinks real bad. I also had an extreme disklike for my first P3 that I had paired with a via chipset. Sis.. I can't comment on them as much.. I haven't used a mobo based on one of their athlon chipsets. AMD makes a nice stable chipset (or should I say DID in limited quantities make the only good chipset for a server IMHO). All my Intel setups that have used an Intel chipset have been rock solid.. EVEN under WINDBLOWS. I use a dualboot on this machine (win2k / redhat 7.3) both are solid... I use windows on it mostly... i do everything from bryce renderings to playing Tribes 2 online, to just websurfing and email... I maybe reboot this machine once a week at most.. usually to hop over to linux for a bit. ok i've rambled long enough....
That is the most well thought out post I've seen so far. And it asks all the questions I've always wanted to know the answers to... now if only we had those answers.
P.S. Sony... Bite me!
"I'm not quite sure yet what poking around there gets them other than network topology info, but I kinda get the feeling that if there is something destructive that can be done, we're gonna get blindsided with it."
Ditto... You're not the only one worried about it!

Building off of it? I would take that as a "derivative work", and so yes, the resultant work will have to be GPL (i.e. you used GPL'ed library of some sort).
Maybe so, but not all of those other companies are monopolies. (MS was found a monopoly in court remember). The rules for what you are allowed to do as a business change when you become a monopoly. MS has just ignored that all along. Think about it. They are essentially using this as a way to kill off another ISP, which is cheaper than MSN's internet service. Gee, I smell a monopoly squashing its ISP competitor through the licensing of software from a technically different market... monopolies aren't allowed to do leveraging, remember!
Well currently I am bidding on a PowerBook G3 (Wallstreet). Current high bidder is myself at $480. Here is the seller's summary:
266Mhz G3 processor full 1024K Backside Cache at 2:1Upgradable
320MB RAM (expandable to 512Mb)
8Gb Hard Drive
20X CD-ROM
ATI RageLTPro Video
2 CardBus Slots
Excellent 14.1 TFT Active Matrix Screen (doesn't
even have the very common keyboard blemishes on
the screen)
New Zip Drive
Ethernet, ADB, SCSI, S-Video, VGA, audio in & out, and Modem/Printer serial Port,
56K Modem
Two firewire ports via Cardbus (brand new)
Brand new Battery
Brand new Yo-Yo type Powersupply/AC adapter
2 Firewire Cables
OSX 10.2 (Jaguar) & OS 9.2.2
Looks and Runs Great (there are a couple of minor scratches from normal use, visable in the picture).
Actually, I am a Linux on x86 user currently, but I am actively seeking out either an iBook or a PowerBook with the specs necessary to run OS X on eBay at this very moment. Funny that this news blurb happened to show up.;) My primary use for the laptop will be to travel with me to college daily. Anyone else doing the same (switching that is...)
That's funny, around here, I can't seem to even GIVE AWAY my Power Macintosh 7600/120
I'm also stuck with a Sony Trinitron tubed Sun Microsystems 17" CRT that I cannot get rid of.
(No I've never put them up on eBay -- no credit card)
I am definitely getting *MY* linux copy. And I *WILL* be registering it with a nice big checkmark next to "Linux" as my choice of OS.
(After all, if you are going to buy the Linux version, make sure they know it by registering it as such!)
I've had to send back about a handfull of Athlon XP chips this year so far, due to erratic behavior/non-working chips (when placed in several different mainboards just to make sure they are infact defective).
That was the Voodoo 5 6000, which came with the "voodoo volts" external power suppy (i.e. plugs into wall outlet). It was also equipped with 4 voodoo chips (SLI) and 128MB of ram on board. However, I thought that board never saw the light of day, as just before production was to begin, they went under. (Maybe I am wrong on that?).
because, although MS would have eliminated/assimilated a competitor with the deal, with MS's name on the console the public reactions would have been the same.
I love my Beige G3 :) (especially after upgrading it).
I do use it everyday... I still think it a toy... and I have a Linux server that does the real work around here :)

LOL!! You have the coolest *nix related sig I have seen!
That's alot of ethernet cabling for a small rack... (wondering where it goes to)
Thanks for the link, I live in Fairborn, OH ;) I have a couple of (working) comps to get rid of
Um what game is this? sounds interesting (really!) .... Does it run on Linux? ;)
PC game?
Right now, LFS needs a place for its servers...

That's funny, in almost all of the offices I've done tech work for, they all have their speakers OFF most of the time. LOL

Umm a keyboard and mouse so I can play my FPS games is what I expect. If they can give me that on a console I'll play.

Oh that's easy to answer. Less money paid to Micro$haft because you didn't have to buy their OS to play your games ;)

PostgreSQL is under BSD license... so Novell doesn't have to contribute back... but it would be nice if they would.
