It certainly has educational relevance, among other things. Anyone who thinks long and hard about an interesting (to them) mathematics problem is not wasting anyone's time. A proof, or even and attempted proof, might have relevance in fields outside of abstract mathematics.
(4) Dump the teacher's union. Give teachers the authority to make the changes needed in education.
Credit Ronald Reagan with the popularity of such schizophrenic reasoning. This one suggests we dump the teachers union and give teachers the authority to make changes. I suppose the teachers will decertify the union and then get together and form an "organization"? Or maybe you're just naive in thinking individual teachers have the power to do anything at all outside of the union agreement. Public school administrators are typically adversarial towards teachers.
I don't know if this is comparable, but I use Metapost for drawing graphs and diagrams. Actually, I draw diagrams long-hand on graph paper, with coordinates labeled, and code it up in Metapost. Even my 3D diagrams look really nice. The EPS output is scalable and can be included directly in TeX (or LaTeX) documents.
People tell me drawing diagrams long-hand first is too much trouble, but it really is the "secret sauce" for me. Also, Metapost is incredibly powerful once you dig in. I think it is ideal for technical drawings. The language is simple and powerful.
The best advice you will ever get: Starting today, spend every single day studying for your PhD exams. Next summer, after you finish the exams, you can hike the Appalachians. Your professors will consider you a genius, or at worst hard-working, and they will write you great recommendations. Don't waste time while you're in graduate school.
The subsidized handset business model is popular with typical US customers because customers do not realize that they are actually paying full price for their handset through what is essentially an installment plan.
TODAY 32 bit UNIX systems are legacy. both in hardware and software.
What about instances in "the cloud"? Many people use 32bit OS on their VPS because it's easier to get their SQL databases (or whatever) inside 512MB of RAM or less.
I used to regularly visit an ophthamologist for a chronic eye condition. Every visit the doctor would sketch by hand an image of the irregularities on my retina. Imagine the licensing costs of software and hardware required to do this, vs a plain paper template. Not everyone at RAND is a genius...
If you get a math degree it should be in APPLIED MATH if you want a programming job. And your resume should say "applied math". Take this from a pure math major who started programming on a Commodore 128 in the 1980's--employers are HIGHLY skeptical of math majors, even though it really is a great major for doing just about anything technical. Many have anecdotes about the "foolish" math major who applied for positions w/o programming experience.
Ten years ago I blocked Slashdot at the firewall. Ten years later I'm still reading, and it sucks even more. And I even have a good job. Damn, just realized I need therapy.
Actually, the support terms for Ubuntu LTS and Debian stable are very similar if you know the process. Debian testing is frozen for the better part of a year before being released as stable, while Ubuntu takes Debian testing and pretends that it is stable. So Ubuntu releases a year earlier than they should while Debian testing is frozen and perfectly useable (in the Ubuntu sense of useable). Lenny got 3 years support as stable, and Squeeze will probably get 3 to 3.5 years. Add the freeze and you get nearly 4 years for Lenny and maybe 4.5 years for Squeeze. AND you get better software. AND Debian stable is (GNU) free software.
I think Debian is the finest operating system in the world. This explains why everybody steals from Debian, not Ubuntu.
Ha! And you thought they were crazy when they bllamed the "White Man" for droughts in Africa.

This one gets my vote for the Most Insightful Post of the Year Award.
Teachers. I can glance at my watch during lectures. It's kinda disruptive and inappropriate to pull out a cell phone while lecturing to students.

Depends on your quality requirements. In a high-quality environment, pictures will be
Amen!

I think you mean ousted.
Oh, c'mon, you messed up the joke. Debian is the best operating system in the world. It is thick-skinned--it can take a joke.
What are these problems with Debian?

+1 Insightful. Debian.
Actually, in my experience, the latest Gnash ALWAYS works on Youtube.
If I understand what you're saying, people should stop procreating altogether. The human race should end because existing isn't "economical"?
Your point is basically good...
The Anonymous Coward pwns the grandparent poster, gets a "Score: 5, Insightful" mod, and all you can say is "your point is basically good..."??? WTF?

The high retail prices of cell phones are fiction. An iPhone for $999???: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16875100060 Granted, this is Apple. But there have always been shitty phones with "retail prices" of $500-$800.

If researchers refuse to publish their data and methodology, their "results" should be summarily dismissed by everyone.

Just want to say thank you to RMS for fighting for our freedoms!

Let's make one OS that runs on the phone AND on your supercomputer.
Good to know -- I'll be sure to stay away from that experiment.
Actually, that OS already exists. It's called "Linux".
