Python is implemented in QuArK (Quake Army Knife, a quake engine mapping tool) and is supposed to be quite useful in automating tedious procedures. Definately have to give it a look-see next time I'm at B&N

businesses are now in the business of staying in business with no end goal. The corporation is effectively immortal and if you remove all regulation then they are also invulnerable. How do you deal with a bully who lives forever and can't be fought? You die.
That is the point of a business, to stay in business. There shouldn't be an end goal becuase when (or if) you reach it, then what? Fire all your employees and start all over?? You seem to think that the whole purpose of having a business is to get a huge pile of cash and then sit on it. If you run a business like most people, you aren't a bully, you're a valued contributer to the community. You'll be a corporate sponsor of local theatre or a parter-in-education at community schools, you show kids how to make slime at your town's Science Day.
Ethics and morals should not be centered around what helps business, but laws shouldn't be written just to make things more difficult for them. What you need to do is remove the notion of the faceless corporation when you go on a rant. Want corporations to have ultra-thin margins? What about workers that have profit sharing? See, you don't think of stuff like that when blindly attack business.
If we remove the subsidies we'll raise the barrier of entry into the markets beyond all reason and leave the big fish as lord and master of their realm with *no* competitors.
Maybe you can fill me in on this one. Did AMD get gov. subsidies? Nope. Is goverment the reason we have 2+ ghz procs for around $200? Lack of gov. regulation does not always equal screwed consumers.
I'll cut the flaming (which I find impressive as flames go) and simply tell you what my point was. If software is free, you won't get any money for writing it. If you don't make money from your trade, you can't really build a career out of it.
"Althought I had to reboot because there was no way to start any new apps at that point."
Actually you can (I think). Try using Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the task manager again then goto File -> New Task then just type explorer and it should run. I find this pretty useful when benchmarking; kill explorer (which uses the most memory of any of the OS threads) and then just run the benchmark from the new task menu. It only helps a little, but every little bit helps in the road to 10000 3DMarks.
"Why aren't programmers in the US going after careers doing Free Software?"
I am sitting here in stunned silence as I contemplate your sub-50 IQ, the immense stupidity of your comment utterly destroying my faith in humanity's ability to rise very far above the astuteness of the primordial ooze from which man emerged. You have single-handedly extinguished the candle of hope that all is not lost by crushing it under the heel of idiocy. You have taken a giant leap backwards for mankind, harking back to the age of the Neanderthal, lowering the intelligence of all that surround you. I also have suffered irrevocable damage because of your post (you will be hearing from my lawyer involving restitution for my suffering). In order to both enlighten you and protect further generations of man that may stumble across your logical landmine, I will now tell you a little secret. Ready? Here it comes. If software is free, you won't get any money for writing it. If you don't make money from your trade, you can't really build a career out of it. When you finally understand what I have just said (I'm guessing 6-8 weeks for full comprehension), you can then send me a thank-you note for pointing this all out to you (don't rush yourself trying to understand it all, I am very patient and don't mind waiting).
Cheers, Dave
"M$, open up some of your source code. That might help."
I believe you meant,
M$, give away your main source of revenue. Your programmers don't really want paid for hard work, and everyone knows that giving out your IP is a great foundation for a profitable business.
"That's why I found it very interesting that Dell (and I assume other retailers) have been forbidden from offering 2k on home systems since March. XP is now the only OS they'll sell you. Hmmmm...I wonder why?
"
I would say because XP is an even better choice for home users. I upgraded from 2000 to XP Pro and I can say it's definately a better choice. XP took all the things I liked in 2000 and either improved it or replaced it with something better. Things like sub 30-second boots, the ability to kill explorer.exe (I think 2000 would shut down if explorer was stopped), and better support of digital cameras and scanners were worth the cost of the switch.
Nah, it'll never happen. Apple doesn't have, nor will they ever have support for DirectX, the most commonly used API for games. Sucks for Apple users, but thats the cost of the crusade against MS.
I'll be right there on the front lines decapitating execs and their government puppets
You didn't by chance ever read the book "A Tale of Two Cities" did you? I think you need to change your user name from MrResistor to M.Defarge. It'd fit your attitude so much better.
"And virtual objects should never be able to recieve a patent"
What about engineers? Does the fact that you haven't built the machine but have all the drawings? What about architects?
In a lot of cases, the virtual object is the hardest part to make yet the easiest to copy. If anything, the virtual object should have more protection than the full product. It's pretty damn easy to make a Lego model when you look at the instructions (the virtual object) but nigh impossible if you can only look at a finished model.

- Can you name a single "technology" MS has announced recently that *nix hasn't had for years (if not decades)?
:-P
DirectX
Optical Mice
Scroll Wheel on Mouse (I think this was theirs)
Back and Forwards Net buttons on Mice
The Windows key
