  1. Editors distort story *sigh* again on NASA Parts Scroungers Resort To eBay For Parts · · Score: 4, Informative
Troves of old parts that NASA uncovers and buys, officials said, are used not in the shuttles themselves but in flotillas of servicing and support gear.

NASA is not so stupid as to not contract for replacement parts for the actual shuttle from subcontractors. This is just for support gear. Probably quite a bit of this gear is custom-built by NASA engineers, like programmers who build their own toolkits. As the article says, it's easier to just scrounge up a board than pay someone to redesign some piece of equipment to use updated components.

  2. The nerd fans always demand justice! on Many Eyes, Shallow Bugs, and Spider-Man · · Score: 5, Funny
Even the venerable Itchy and Scratchy had their critical fans. Observe:

Doug: In episode 2F09, when Itchy plays Scratchy's skeleton like a xylophone, he strikes the same rib twice in succession, yet he produces two clearly different tones. I mean, what are we to believe, that this is some sort of a [the three nerds chuckle] magic xylophone or something? Boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder.
    June: Uh, well, uh...
Homer: I'll field that one. Let me ask you a question. Why would a man whose shirt says "Genius at Work" spend all of his time watching a children's cartoon show?
Doug: [embarrassed pause] I withdraw my question. [starts eating a candy bar]

  3. Two things that strike me on Microsoft vs. Northwest Schools Part II · · Score: 5, Insightful
    1. Public awareness, bad publicity for MS. Microsoft can't afford any more PR hits, because the next rock could be the one that starts the avalanche. It's pretty clear that the most effective weapon against MS's tactics is public knowledge of their behavior. Sure, they can smooth it over, but as they say, a tiger can't change its stripes. Meow.

    2. Committed volunteers. As the article points out, the LUG was a big help. One of the cool things about the open source community is the freedom and diversity of work. But a pitfall is that it is not organized around a single goal like a corporation. If the Linux community said (i.e., leaders said), we are committed to getting all public schools onto free software and keeping them going, make that your priority, what amazing things could be accomplished? Instead many people would rather work on their own, probably less important projects. I love working on my own stuff just for the fun of it, but there comes a time to put down your own agenda and dig ditches for a greater goal.

  4. MS can't have it both ways on Microsoft's Goal, Security Through Obscurity? · · Score: 5, Interesting
Hasn't MS claimed for years that it doesn't have secret APIs that only MS developers get access to? Haven't they always claimed that there is a level playing field for developers to create, oh, say, office suites for Windows? Now they say they can't turn over their secret APIs which they denied existed for security reasons?

Bill Gates can't be a borg. Nothing that is part machine could tolerate such inconsistency. Only humans can say that 1=0 and believe it.

  5. I've seen slashdot do it! on Online News Stories that Change Behind Your Back · · Score: 1
A few weeks back, I saw a story on slashdot posted with about 10 comments. Most of the comments were people yelling that this was a repeat story from a few days earlier. I refreshed a few minutes later and the whole story was gone. I'm not sure why this story was selected to be deleted when so many other reposts happen. I wished I had took a screen shot of the page.

But then again, slashdot steadfastly refuses to correct blatant errors, bad grammar, horrid spelling, botched acronyms (DCMA anyone?) in their story postings. And I don't want to get into editor comments in stories. Some things you wouldn't mind being "revised"...

  6. Re:This could make an amusing lie detector on Video Games to Help You Relax · · Score: 1
The game uses galvanic skin response technology which works measuring the ability of the skin to conduct electricity. This changes as a person relaxes or tenses up and forms the basis for lie detector tests.

I suppose if you played the game while trying to tell lies, you might be able to learn to control your galvanic skin like a natural-born pathological liar. Pretty handy for beating that murder rap...

  7. Re:Sharman Networks wants a copyright tax on ISPs! on More on Kazaa and Brilliant Digital Spyware · · Score: 1
Yes, but the RIAA clearly stated in the article they were against this tax, becuase they realize that one you tax the ISPs for the p2p content, you've lost your claim that it is illegal to share content. They can't sue anyone for copyright infringement, and they will have effectively lost control.

They don't want the government setting their royalty rates, they want to keep their cartel-like stranglehold on the market. I don't think that this tax will happen unless the RIAA goes along with it, and they are not going to go along with it.
