    Many LCD monitors have tough screens that can take a cleaning.

    I suggest ditching your old monitors (and whatever laptops they may be attached to) and buying some newer technology.

    Don't forget to back up important files, though.

    When someone tells you that they hate you, you have two responses that can work.

    1) Say, "Oh, why do you hate me?" or
    2) say, "Fuck you".

    It's a gross generalization to say that the rest of the world hates Americans. I would wager that most of the world doesn't have a conscious opinion one way or the other. The vocal group of people who go on and on about how bad Americans are really don't deserve the first response.

    You can only use it if you aren't planning on using it in a business setting.

    The DeathRow OpenVMS Cluster operates under the hobbyist program. If you intend to use these reasources for commerical reasons (for example: porting commercial code, or running a company web page), you will be removed. This would violate our hobbyist agreement/license, and we can't afford to let that happen.

    So, it's useless as a replacement for anything.

    Not so. The system only has to be compromised on the rc side to have a network-wide effect.

    They are leaving a hole in the system that says to the world "Your wish is my command". *Any* rc client will be able to access *all* rcd servers on the network.

    You may believe the system's airtight, but people who hold that belief are often proved wrong.

    Like web services?

    No, because the devices won't necessarily need the web to communicate. What with all the DRM crap that's going on now, it's possible that a largescale segregation of devices will happen resulting in mini networks of devices that only interact with devices from the same manufacturer. The future doesn't lean towards openness.

    One place that no one in this thread has mentioned where Java is really useful is in web apps for stock market trading or online banking.

    Small, transient applications like those are very handy and ubiquitous.

    your statement assumed that software written in a particular language must be available in a retail store for the language to be alive. That simply isn't so

    Perhaps my statement was overly broad, but it did draw out some good criticism.

    The point that I was getting at is that Java the language is fine and in use all over the place, but as a technology it has failed on the desktop (it thrives elsewhere). The fact that you can buy JBuilder, which is written in Java, means something. It means that it was meant to be used across platforms, from Windows to Solaris. Internal Java programs don't have the requirement, generally, that they must run cross-platform. They run on the system they were designed for and that's it.

    Got any hard numbers to back up your big talk? So far there's been one product named that's useful across multiple platforms. Everything else that's been mentioned has been internal use only and those certainly don't need to be cross platform.

    I'll toss out another one for you. JBuilder is written in Java and useful across multiple platforms. Got any more?

    Isn't saving quarters one of those things that you do in college that you can tell stories about later? How you ran to the student center to get change in your wet clothes becuase you didn't plan on running out of quarters before you could start the dryer...

    With credit cards, it all seems too easy and boring.
