  1. Re:The value of your data on Do-it-yourself UPS · · Score: 1

I'm sorry you live in a third world neighborhood where the power lines are still above ground. Do the cows stampede when there's thunder?

  2. The value of your data on Do-it-yourself UPS · · Score: 2

Aside from corporate networks where constant uptime is absolutely necessary, why in the world would someone want to shell out for a power supply? I can understand the hack value in piecing together your own UPS, but it's all pretty much worthless in the end. Any catastrophe that could knock out power to your outlet is going to be big enough to ruin the UPS in the process.

Unless you live in Myanmar with its unpredictable power producing capabilities, this kind of expensive toy is useless. Even in Myanmar, though, you'd expect that you'd be accustomed to backing up every once in a while.

From what I understand (IANAB), even your grandfather was somewhat allergic. The bump seems to be a reaction to the bite, though he is certainly lucky that it doesn't itch.

I am basing my information on a Discovery Channel show on insect repellents. The researchers in the labs have been bitten enough times that they can be bitten multiple times (by inserting their arm into a box filled with mosquitoes) and still come away with no reaction whatsoever.

    It's not a job I'd want...

I use the term electronica because techno has itself been pigeonholed into the larger classification of electronica. In conversation, though, techno is the term I use. Funny that.

Of course I'm way over here in the house camp licking Danny Tenaglia's boots. But that's a different conversation.

I just went back and listened to them. One problem I had was that the computer was louder than any sound being played. The noise of the cheap speakers drowned out anything but the loudest clicks and taps.

I've always thought that electronica was one of the closest relatives to traditional classical music where the meter and timing and beat were very similar in both styles of music. But this new electronica doesn't seem to have any of that. It's more like... random recordings of random sounds, no better than the background noise of your room.

This fad will hopefully pass quickly.

It one is really interested in some interesting electronica, there's a really great sound coming out of India or at least is based on Indian music. Very cool. I wish I could remember the term off the top of my head.

If only we could get rid of that goth/death/I hate everyone electronica, or at least replace most of the noise with lowercase music, that would be awesome.

You usually have to pay for the kind of power that you need.

If you want to serve some OSS projects, then all you need is a handful of Athlons and Linux. But if you want to serve a large enterprise system, you're going to need some big iron and big iron software.

These fees are not as expensive as having your network crash because some zealot thought he could set up an equivalent network in Linux instead of Solaris.
