Well... how many people would know what they are talking about if they said it was the size of an AS/400? It's just something the populace can grasp without resorting to less PC analogies such as the size of Oprah (not to mention that the latter tends to vary quite dramatically from time to time)...
Just bomb the fucking thing. No, not Qatar because that would not be kosher. Those guys, in the scheme of things, are quiet all right. Couldn't it be that an "unexpected solar flare" would just fry the frigging satellite? Instead of hacking their web site (how many Arabs do you think have access to the Internet), hack the damn satellite. It's the "Eurobird" at 28.5 degrees East (11.585GHz H).
If you think he sounds like a Nazi, you sound just as foolish. It's not about "forcing" the end of religions or "forcing" the adoption of a single religion. The point brought up has to do with the fact we as a civilization, kill each other in name of our respective religions and we would probably be better off without it as we know it.
The answer to most our problems will arrive the day we realize religion does not make us any different from each other. Ending all religions, the adoption of a single religion, or learning how to cope with the differences is irrelevant to the extent we differentiate people based on their religious believes.
Religion, as I see it has two unrelated purposes. The first is trying to explain the inexplicable. Giving people hope and meaning to their lives in a spiritual level. The second is the corruption of this belief system in order to obtain power and control. The latter however is what we see the most across the board. From radicals in the Middle East to the White House.
Alien life shakes the very foundation of this belief system. That's why it is a threat to so many. I have no doubts we will be a very different society after the discovery of new life elsewhere. We don't ever need to contact them. The knowledge of the existence will suffice. It makes every thing else look petty and irrelevant. Only than we would concentrate on living our lives as one unit as opposed to go on as warring idiots trying to prove to each other we're better.
Though that could theoretically be effective, it is somewhat simplistic. It would become a new 9/11, tons of money would get thrown at it and it would become the end of even more civil liberties. Negative attacks are almost always ineffective because it is too easy to play with people's fears and have an opposite outcome than the one intended. Especially when dealing with ignorance, which tends to be rather abundant.
I couldn't agree more with everything you say. The problem is most folks don't know squat and/or don't give a dam. The real question is: what can [seriously] be done about it? Boycotting and similar approaches are delusional. The "system" obviously doesn't work. Just look at the pathetic outcome of the trial. Is resistance indeed futile? How many people here have similar thoughts but go back to work cranking out code that only perpetuates this? Probably the only boycott that could work would be one where no developer would accept writing code that could not be ported. That is a much smaller group (and usually a bit savvy on the subject) than the populace in general.
If they are on "our" side and none of "us" want this [spam], who are "they"? It feels an awful small minority if you ask me. Why those who represent us don't take this into account?
That is, of course a rhetorical question. I just had to ask...
Well... it's not really a matter of "enough". I don't think a monetary punishment will make any difference. These things are invariably embroiled into such obscure terms that little is actually disbursed to anyone other than the lawyers involved. The issue here is that we have a company practicing illegal business and nothing is being done to actually stop it from doing it.
Suppose a wealthy rapist rapes a woman and as punishment, he has to pay some amount of money. He then goes and continue raping as he pleases. These penalties are not a problem as his bank account has enough to keep paying out whatever penalty comes his way. Would any amount be "enough"?
Banning guns is such a hot issue... Just ban IDIOTS. Get rid of idiots and the problems will go away. Incidentally, if you manage to rid America of Idiots, there won't be any guns.
Is this an architectural problem or is it the level of software engineering? When I first saw a Mac (the very first one, mind you), I got put off by its "programmer unfriendly environment". Given that, my resources got diverted to more interesting platforms. I wonder how common is that and what it means to the level of software engineering today.
Where are the/. lawyers when you need one. Given the attorneys FatWallet hired, the intent looks like something along those lines. How can this be turned into a way to kill DMCA or at least expose it for what it is?
There is a giant chasm between joe sixpack (98% of the populace), us (1%) and "them". The world is populated by idiots who can tell you who is who in "Survivors" but can't point their own state on a map. Hoping that this will bring the issue to joe sixpack's attention is an exercise in futility.
I don't get this. Why is the burden laid on the libraries? What if the blocking software fails? Will the library get nabbed? Will the software maker be prosecuted? Wouldn't that be royal... opening doors to bad software suits...
Why isn't the burden laid on the porn sites themselves? If a child gets access to a smut site, send the smut peddler to a Turkish prison. Put the burden of prevention on the scum bags themselves. What annoys the crap out of me is the abuse of misspelled URLs pointing straight to smut sites. Children (and folks around/.) are the most likely to misspell URLs.
This has to do with the utter ignorance of Americans with relation no anything outside our borders. This is why angry Arabs blow themselves into our buildings. Ignorance. There is even a book out titled "The Dummy Guide to Muslim".
The European culture will side to quality before quantity. The American culture is the other way around. Just look at the stuff available at WallMart, the absurdly large SUVs, the boat loads and boat loads of crap coming from China, etc.
Computers, like everything else in this country is a discardable commodity. That's simply not how things are done in Europe. The results of this ruling will have a quite different outcome (cultural and otherwise) within the European community.
That's so stupid I can't even believe it. I guess if you have to fly and there is no other fuel... The reason alcohol is so popular in Brazil is because the big producers of sugar cane "own" the freaking government and came up with this idea to power the national fleet with alcohol.
The energy you get from alcohol is a lot less than that you get from gasoline. You need a greater volume of alcohol to produce the same energy output. That is, alcohol engines consume a greater volume of alcohol than gasoline in order to generate the same power.
It takes more energy to produce alcohol then the energy obtained by it. They manage it in that third world shit hole because they run the mills on cane waste. That is, they burn the cane waste in order to fuel the mill. That creates a really bad pollution. The process is really messy and the byproducts are very toxic, which is promptly dumped on nearby rivers and streams. Compared to that an oil refinery looks like the green party general quarters.
Alcohol is not the answer. It's simple physics. The energy input is greater than the energy output. Stop wasting time and come up with a decent, non polluting alternative to fossil fuels, not something that only exists to make those corrupt politicos even richer while the other 99% of the population eat shit.
After receiving a zillion junk faxes, I decided to switch the number listed in my whois record. The fax number there now is the FCC fax number to complain about junk faxes. I wish I could see the face of the FCC guy when the deluge of junk faxes start.
>> This simply isn't funny or clever or fresh or even at all coherent. Moderator is an idiot.
What is truly funny, clever, and fresh is a Microsoft ass kisser posting as an AC⦠You take life too seriously. Chill out and let it be.
On the corridors towards the Mac, droves march on while signs along the walls say: Could the last one out please turn off that BSOD?
$30k for a flight simulator and all he has to snack on are moldy peanuts...
That explains... This eliminates everyone in Redmond. Given that they have no clue what happens outside their own planet, this is not a surprise.
Eliminate the user. That takes care of half of the problems...

You can invoke cmd.exe directly (try cmd /? at the command prompt) bypassing the batch file.

A clean drink and a whole new meaning to dealing with the dirty laundry.
