I own this book and have found it to be a valuable resource when designing a system. I've used it only for small backend applications though the concepts are even more appropriate for larger ones.
This issue has been going on for a long time. The cable companies do the same thing. I have to pay monthly rental charges on my cable converter and my cable modem. I think the only difference is that I went into the contract with the knowledge that I was being ripped off, whereas this legal case makes the clain that the customers were unaware of the practice.
I've actually picked up a refurb Sony PCV-MXS10 relatively cheaply and it does a pretty darn good job of integrating the PVR cababilties into the PC. It's got a cut little LCD display on the front of the case that I can't wait to hack...
I'd imagine it will be priced reasonably. I can't see this as something people would pay extra for, at least not in the US. This reminds me of all the competing Minidisc makers that put cute little designs on the plastic and charge for it. It seems to be a hit in Japan, but in the US, we'll buy the best combination of price and reliability.
You've now thanked him by pointing that out to all! ;)

This very similar to what happened with the gif format.
I posted about this a few weeks ago, but alas it was rejected. Guess it's more interesting now!
Perhaps we should stop heating water then? No more cooking or hot showers?

I think the album is very good, and I'm glad I bought it.
