If you want an ARM netbook, get yourself a Touchbook. Its based on the BeagleBoard, runs Linux, and has a 10-hour battery life.

Alternatively, there are these devices: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skytone_Alpha-400. These are MIPS-based (still a nice ISA), can run Linux and are the cheapest netbooks you can get. The best bet for getting one is to try an online auction site such as eBay and try searching for "MIPS", or the names that these cheapo devices go under.

    Sure. The Telegraaf article:

    Groningen migrates to OpenOffice

The Groningen city council is the first large city council to start making use of OpenOffice. In this way, a savings of 330,000 Euro are expected that would otherwise be used to pay license costs. The councillers decided yesterday evening that the contract with Microsoft for the Microsoft Office software suite that has expired in the last month would not be extended.

The contract with Microsoft for the operating system Windows will however be extended. The city Groningen has around 181,000 citizens, and the city council runs around 3650 PCs. A few years ago, [the city council] began a study to determine the feasibility of using Open Standards and Open Source Software. The reason for this study was to break through the monopoly of the large software providers, and that [people wanted programs to become less dependant on that] (?).

    Still no migration to Linux

OpenOffice will be installed on Windows in Groningen. The results of the study showed that a complete migration to another open platform such as Linux is not yet possible. The council has recommended that work-places in Groningen should make as much use of software that will run on both Windows and Linux. This would make the migration to Linux easier at a later stage.

    Money bags

A large part of the money saved from using OpenOffice will be held in reserve for possible purchases of Microsoft licenses. This is to avoid the risk that the general accounts of the city council will be needed to be used for purchasing licenses for those to refuse to budge from Microsoft Office. The amount of money held in reserve is likely to be around the 170,000 mark.

Another 78,450 Euro will be used to finance a migration team that will prepare for the migration to an operating-system independant workplace.

How would we clean up the mess? Do they combust? Will they eventually oxidize to CO2? How do you destroy a carbon nanotube? Or will they just go through the food cycle causing damage for millenia?

Oh, and a couple of features of this screen that I should probably mention: Its called the "ICWall" (www.icwall.nl, which is broken), and it actually has 16 projectors.

It does proper 3D - the screen is polerized, and students can wear polerized glasses to get the full 3-D experience. Behind the scenes is a cluster of Linux boxen, one for each pair of projectors, and OpenGL stuff is done by sending the display lists over the network in real-time.

The screen is also hooked up to the 400-processor DAS-2 cluster upstairs through a very fast network connection.

And you can play Quake on it :-). I reckon it won't take them long to get Doom 3 rigged up on it :-P.

The AI's may have been originally programmed to not unnecessarily kill humans, as a clever programmer in the year 2010 might do. When the AI's took over the world, they couldn't kill us, so they locked us up.

  13. translation.. on University of Twente NOC Destroyed · · Score: 3, Informative

This is a translation from the telegraaf (which, btw, isn't the best newspaper in holland, but anyway..)

    "University network down from fire"

"ENSCHEDE - A fire in the computing center from the university of Twente (UT) in Enschede has caused a few 10's of millions of euros damage on Wednesday.

The fire, which broke out about 8:00am, has disabled the universities network. There were no injuries. The fire department has cleared out several buildings in the nearby facinity. The IT departments of the UT and a part of the business studies department were housed in the building where the fire broke out. The building was three stories high.

The fire department fought the fire with several dozen people and estimated that they would need the whole day to get the fire under control. There are, until now, no dangerous substances released. The cause of the outbreak is not yet known.

According to Van Vught, a backup of the network's data has been made. "All data have been safely stored". Because of exams, there were no classes at the time. There were also few students on the campus on wednesday. Exams on wednesday have been cancelled.

Staff at the UT want to set up a temporary network, which can take several days. Thousands of staff and students can not make use of the campus network until a temporary network has been installed.

One on-looking business studies student is shocked (?): "incredibly sad. It means that I can't do my assignments. Doubtless, a temporary building will need to be set-up to help the situation". The Saxion Polytechn in Enschede has made room available.

The web-site from the Enschede city council is not available because of the fire. The council used the servers from the UT. The Saxion Polytech is also without internet access for the same reason."

Okay, this translation is a wee-bit too literal, but it's understandable.
