  2. Access for Non-English on Will the U.S. Lose Control of the Internet? · · Score: 2, Informative

Access for non-English actually means something entirely different from what you think. Right now DNS names are restricted to ASCII characters. If you live in China, Japan, Russia, or any of a number of other places, you can't use your own alphabet to get to a website. Even if the entire site is in your native language, you still have to use English to get there.

There's something called IDN (Internationalized Domain Names) that is an effort to change that by allowing DNS to use Unicode characters. That way you could have native language DNS names.

How would you like it if you had to type in something in Chinese to get to /.???

  3. Discussion and History? on When Wikipedia Fails · · Score: 1

Wikipedia does have some features somewhat similiar to meta-moderation, etc. Every article on Wikipedia potentially has a linked discussion page where contributors can discuss what should be in the real article. You can also look at the change history to note where there are points of contention, even on relatively recent and controversial subjects so long as they are fairly regional in scope. If a topic has a lot of updates, then it starts to become impractical to analyze the history, but so long as there's only a few people editting back and forth, it tends to work.

The difference is that GMails 'delete forever' isn't really like deleting from deleted items, it just hides the message.

This is bad phraseology and bad lawyering. It will create bad law, but its not the end of society as we know it.

As for precedential value, IANAL, but as far as I understand it, a higher court would have to affirm the lower court's decision before it is truly binding on other courts.

Thats going to be difficult. All the energy that goes out needs to go in first. There are 1440 minutes in a day, so if you want the battery to charge in as many minutes as it lasts days, you're going to need to put power in at least 1440 times faster than it comes out. I read over two of your studies, and they both show that cell phones increase reaction times. I still don't see how this follows to banning cell phone use while driving.

Obviously, slower reaction times could lead to doing "bad" things while driving. You could run a red light, rear end another vehicle, etc. However, all these things are already banned. Prohibiting cell phones because they lead to traffic violations would be redundant.

I would further argue that cell phone use could in fact improve driving. Suppose for a moment that I am driving and know someone who is driving ahead of me. By calling them, I can get information about the road ahead. I could also call home and have someone look up the weather online and alert me to where a storm is so that I can choose an alternate route. Are these activities that should be banned?

You say you are thrilled to see scientific data, but then you say you want more studies that support your point of view. That kinda defeats the point, methinks.

I talk on the cell phone while driving all the time. I take care in my driving, and if something happens that needs my attention, I ignore the person on the other end of the line. It's just like tuning out music when driving needs your attention.

Just because you are incapable of multi-tasking doesn't mean that I am as well. If I have an accident while driving, give me a ticket for that, not for using my phone.

Make analogies to drunk driving all you want. Such arguments are falacies of false analogy. Alcohol physically impairs you. You can't just snap out of it. While talking on my cell, I can easily just drop my phone, and then the "impairment" is gone.

Stop trying to legislate what I do that might lead to something "wrong." Legislate against bad things, not things that could lead to bad things.
