    Those people would be me.

    If the headline says "Jacko is dead" that's enough information for me to start a real conversation with colleagues, friends and the wife. Being a gobby know-it-all is not good when you want a proper discussion.

    If it's a subject with a bit more meaning, I'll try the BBC first, Sky News second, ITN, C4 - all news providers I've already paid for. Maybe The Telegraph, The Sun, The Daily Fail, if the subject interests me. The chances are it's on Twitter, G+ and the ilk too.

    Local news is the only news where it's worth reading all the text. RSS feeds cover those nicely. Funnily enough, the local sites often have adverts to local events, which I have more chance of using.

    Big news - you are dead. Get over it.

    She also employed her husband to give some advice, to the tune of 600 pound notes. Nice work if you can get it, yeah? I might start charging my partner for advice.

    I ate Italian here in the UK a few months back, and very nice it was too. There was a large group of us and the owner brought us a large bottle of grappa after our meal.

    How can you drink that crap?

    The downside? The crap stuff was free, the good stuff cost us plenty :)

    Gaboon ply was always seen as the "daddy" of composites. It's extremely stable. Why not use that?

    I wouldn't ignore it either.

    A simple letter back, yes I'm British, stating that I'd recieved their letter, don't agree with it, and will fight any legal action with great vigour, would be enough.

    Big corporations have processes. Big expensive processes. Use them.

    Internaly, someone delivers that letter, someone opens it, someone scans it, someone enters the data, someone has to follow the process through until the end. All that costs an expensive man-hour.

    Or they bin it, which is also a result.

    Sub story... I got fed up with Tesco checking my 20 pound notes in front of everyone in their shop. Not once have I passed off fake money. Never, ever. I get offended by their acusations.

    So I filled out one of their online forms, acusing them of passing off fake one-pound coins.

    They phoned me twice and inbetween held an internal review and staff training exercise.

    Cost to me - 3 minutes
    Cost to them - over a man-hour

    Do it.

    All the unmarked police cars in my town are actually marked. They're marked by the same colour and the licence plates all start with the same two letters.

    All the car-modding forums have a thread detailing these observations but this is a Facepalm story, I mean Facebook story, so it must be a special story.

    So many websites have come and gone over the years. Bookmarks have been entered and deleted. Forums have come and gone. Websites, including my own, came and went. And in all that time, Slashdot has remained online. It's the oldest website I know.

    I haven't been here since the beginning, almost if you count a year or so, but Slashdot has remained a daily visit since the day I found it.

    I use the spelling gaol. I've been trolled(?) for using it on here. It's not a common spelling these days, but when I was reading books written from 1945 onwards, gaol was the only spelling used.

    I'm English. No fucker outside of this country can question my use of the Queen's English, even though she's a miserable witch.

    The users around here, even if they managed to enter a password in Truecrypt, would just as happly click "password-hint.exe". And for that reason alone, I'm out.

    We still burn CDs here ffs. It's the default answer to moving files around. We have 10,000 users on the network. A netwrok designed to move files around.

    So much bullshit on one thread. I get lambasted when talking about sorting multi-dimensional arrays, so I no longer do it... *sigh*

    At 70mph, driving a car with and without power *assisted* steering is exactly the same.

    At 5mph, when you're parking, power *assisted* steering is a great help.

    My current car has no power *assisted* steering. I can brake fine (although one damper is failing, causing a judder). I can steer fine. Reverse parking is easy.

    I've blocked Obama on G+. I know enough about him. I've read about him over the past four years. A likable chap in my eyes. And yes, I would have a beer with him.

    Romney. I've circled him and have a saved search. I knew little about him until a few months back. Now I know the man's an idiot and I wouldn't waste a walk to the polling station for him. He'll fuck the world up even more if he gets in.

    So, liking, or +1'ing, doesn't mean a single thing.

    Google Drive for the win though. Nothing beats Google for pure speed.

This bastard had duplicated a single of my articles I typed about the events of a symposium, with images and the whole lot, and used it in a general idea piece of writing. The most unpleasant part of it is that my university lecturer didn't worry about it. I am still round the bend, and it occurred 15 durations previously.

    The real problem is the rural community thinking the British population owes them a broadband connection.

    I have a big fat pipe. 30mbit, soon to be 60mbit.

    I grew up in a lovely rural farmland village.

    After leaving school, there was no work in the area, and the house prices were inflated by high-earning commuters, so I moved to the concrete jungle with its vast infrastructure. I sacrificed the green fields, smell of cow shit and huge gardens for the chance to work and live in a house. I also gained a big fat pipe.

    Cake and eat it.

    If people in the villages want broadband, they should move. Or they should buy me a field full of cows and cow shit.

    Fuck 'em. Fuck 'em all.

    Thanks for sharing that. I was aware of this story before Slashdot posted it but I didn't feel the need to hunt for the joke. It's an old, old joke.

    Speaking of old jokes, that maths teacher who ran off to France with that 15-year-old a few weeks back. He was practicing long division; seeing how many times 30 went into 15.

    Old, old jokes. Lock me up and throw away the key.

    I heard a phrase once: "All Americans see themselves as future millionaires and their current situation is temporary." or something like that. It's that can-do attitude people see in Americans.

    I feel us British are the same with comedy. We all think we're just one joke away from our chance at the Hammersmith Apollo (large venue in London where comedians reach their peak). I've even said something similar about myself: For every 10 jokes I tell, one is a gem, the rest are forgetable.

    Bad comedy is just that. Bad. Bad in the bad way.

    I've seen that all over the place.

    There's a worker here and she does the exact same job as me, only she's a contractor.

    At the end of every week, my timesheet says 37 hours, hers says 50. Not only does she cost the company double what I do, she takes 35% more time to do her work, and I read too much Slashdot.

    She's seen as the better worker, as she's always here when the lights are turned off in the evening.

    Yabadaba-fucking-do.

    It shouldn't wind me up but it does.

    I had an out-of-the-blue phone call the other day. The guy knew my name and spoke clearly in a friendly manner.

    I'd signed up to a website and he was phoning me to see if I'd found my way around properly. He was offering to stay on the line and talk me through the online videos, he was telling me Google search terms to help me out and offered to email me links to YouTube videos. Twenty minutes I chatted to him. It was all very pleasant.

    I've never had a phone call like that. I've never had Google, Amazon, PayPal or Ebay phone me to ask if everything's OK. It was kind of shocking; here was a faceless company, that I may or may not continue to use after the initial transaction, phoning me up offering decent help.

    Some of these call centre workers are nice people who do a good job and should be treated with respect.

    The company was BetFair. I continue to use them.

    "what's a pound in English?" I ask, knowning full well they don't know the answer. It's 0.45kg, by the way.

    "c'mon, I'm nearly 40 years old and we were never taught feet and inches". Which is not quite true, as we spent a whole hour doing imperial when I was 7.

    "how many fluid ouces in a pint?" I'll ask, when people younger than me are using old school measurements. Most don't know.

    "Don't alienate my daughter with your silly units" rams it home.

    And finally,

    "So how many hogheads per fornight does your horse and carriage get?" seems to get me that look I always enjoy getting.

    I can forgive my mother using imperial. She knows no better. Everyone else is just lazy and they don't even know their own measurements, which winds me up.
