I don't know. But what I want is for this guy to come up with a device to edit all the advertisements out of my TV shows or edit them out of the movies I watch, my internet, my magazines, my bus stops.
It seems to me like parents choosing to monitor (filter) what their children are being exposed to isn't the worst possible thing.
As long as the edited versions are a choice, not a rule.
I don't see this as such a problem. The people who will seek out these videos will not be exposed to the artist's full vision, true. But this won't be the case for most people and this is a marginal group were talking about.
Besides, remember the Jar Jar issue. Sometimes maybe an artist needs to be edited.
I don't mind as long as I can clearly tell the difference between someone's butchered edit and the original. All I see is a bunch of Mormons getting a chance to see some good movies without having to give up their moral beliefs.
The only trouble spot I see is when someone decides that their theater will only show edited versions of a film, but that's a couple of years down the line for now..
I had the same problem: $17 avg. cd with maybe 1 or 2 really good songs 1 or 2 so-so and 10 songs I didn't care for (back in my electronica days). Then it hit me...I didn't really like the music I was listening to..
I dumped my music selection down to just what I knew I liked and started searching for new stuff/styles.
I rediscovered 4ad Records, but now mostly I listen to indie (mp3.comindieradio.org)..in case your curious.
Before you start getting worked up why don't you take a minute to reread the information on the CDex website:
"There is an application called NeoAudio, which is a straight CDex rip off. They changed some string (i.e. replace CDex with NeoAudio), changed the logo and added some nice SpyWare and Adware."
Now maybe if they had added some new code or created some bug fixes..but as a developer maybe you can see why this has disappointed the real developer and sparked a bit of outrage in the community.
Not that slashdot doesn't go a bit overboard. But if you feel like the "morons flaming" will stop this kind of parasitic "developer" then just maybe for once their doing the right thing?
As far as "they've retained the GPL", they don't have a choice.
If your considering going into business with someone else's software project it seems like it would be a very good idea to read the terms of the license, or if you can't understand it yourself hire an attorney to do so.
What I don't understand is how did your post get modded up?
The community of Wine developers recently voted to switch to the GNU LGPL license (similar to the one used by the Linux kernel). This a problem for TransGaming because WineX uses proprietary interfaces needed by most Windows games for copy-protection. In order to comply with the LGPL, TransGaming would need to release all the source code in WineX. According to their reading of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), this is against the law in the United States. Instead, they have decided to keep working from the current code base and not use any Wine code released under the new license. The "ReWind" project will be the development site for the forked version of the code. Unfortunately, this means that TransGaming will not be able to take advantage of future enhancements to Wine made by other developers, and the Wine project will not get any of the work done by TransGaming. Realistically, they had very little choice, since the majority of Windows games use copy-protection. The Wine project will continue as usual at winehq.
Can this step be automated? Say by Mozilla as an add-on or something?
I don't know anything about coding, but as a business manager I know the best way to get something done by the people you would like to do it is to make it so easy that its almost more work *not* to do it.
Generally people really appreciate well designed systems, I'd even say take pleasure in them..
Apparently it is more rewarding to *complain* then to do anything.
Until the discomforts of lost rights outweigh the existing middle class comforts this crowd will just make a few witty post before congratulating themselves and going back to sleep.
Why are there still no www.geekpack.org links with these stories?
Slashdot seems to have a short attention span..
From their site:
"GeekPAC is an organization created for the specific purpose of Lobbying Directly to Influence Elections and the passage of legislation that fits the goals of our organization. We are a "PRO" Information Technology, "PRO" Freedom of Information, "PRO" Equal Access, "PRO" Freedom of Innovation and "PRO" Free Enterprise organization. In essence we speak directly too issue that appeals to the people who live with, and work with technology. Our goal is to become a voice to better represent those people."
Would someone who actually gets listened to put them in there sig or something? Am I the only one who thinks this is a *GOOD* thing?
They were last mentioned Thursday April 11, but I don't think they were excepting membership then..
Wouldn't this be a good time to mention Geekpac? Seems like the last time they were mentioned they were just getting things set up. Now they are accepting members.
Just in case anybody wants to put their money where their mouth is.
Why doesn't apple support (export) mpeg-2? Its really $*&% inconvenient not to be able to export to a SVCD ready format, and I thought apple was the media monster...
First I'd like to apologise, although I read your post the music I am going to suggest is a bit darker then the selections you have mentioned. That said, this music is some of the best of its kind, it's electronic and tends to be "isolationist" or "paraniod". Who know's, maybe you'll like it?
A good place to look would be emusic.com if you've got the bandwidth (and $9.99;) you could download I lot of music and probably find a good deal of if suits you. They even have some Sasha And John Digweed.
I also like finding artists I like on mp3.com (suprise) and checking the links they provide to artist they like! Great way to accidentally pull an all nighter.
Now I know this is getting alittle long, so I'll make this my last comment: if you do like ambient (perfect, cerebral, moody ambient) and literature try Paul Bowles spoken word album Baptism Of Solitude , the only thing more amazing then his stories is his voice.
Hope this is helpful to someone.

Seems like it has to happen, but I really don't like the implications. IMHO a machine capable of harm but incapable of moral reasoning should not be autonomous. What about a police force? Under a repressive regime? Call me old fashioned, but I think maybe only people should kill people. (or better yet, not.)
I'ld just like to second that. I love Gnome, but I am definitely in love with Blackbox...
Well really, I left Windows to get away from the Exporer shell (but props to DarkStep and GeoShell), and the Gnome desktop always felt like using it again. (I'm really not trying to knock it)
One question for the Gnome (desktop) users: Whats up with that toolbar?
I would recomend being very carefull with any MS Office replacements. Make sure that they can really handle all the existing documents; specifically complicated Excel documents that may be fairly neccesary. I use both linux and SOT Office at home but I wouldn't dream of using it seriously at work...yet. It is a nice alternative, but it doesn't reliably import all the files yet. And I haven't seen anything that does. And I would kill someone if one day I came into work and found a niffty new desktop with brand new Linux and Star Office software and couldn't get the documents I'ld been using for years to work. All..that..data..
Before you knew it people would be hiding windows boxes, bringing in laptops. It would be anarchy.
