Call me paranoid but does anyone else ever ponder that maybe the astroid IS going to hit and like the article says - they can't find a way of destroying something like that for 30 years so those in power thought 'well rather than have everyon getting all panic filled lets say we were wrong we wont be hit and in this time work out how we can be safe'? I mean it seems a bit weird we suddenly have a 'no sorry, wrong, actually nearly another 40 years ontop of our original prediction' article? Just my two cents.

You mention you are running XP. The default XP drivers for geforce cards are useless - make sure you download the ones from nvidia and you should notice a MASSIVE increase in speed. If you have done this then the problem lies elsewhere (duh :)

    Hope that helps

I shouldn't be posting this as a reply to a funny comment but still...

Technically it shouldn't run either windows or linux. This is mainly because, and some one correct me if I am wrong, operating systems were developed so that developers didn't need to code software for every single type of hardware configuration available. If you consider that (and I am making an assumption here) that the electronic insect is not like a computer in the conventional sense that Linux and Windows would have a hard time adapting code to suit the hardware that it would be quicker to develop it's own Operating System.

Just some thoughts and views as to why we won't see flies dropping to the ground because they haven't been activated after 45 days :)

I believe that PCI-Express is just around the corner now. Hopefully it will be starting to appear early next year. I won't be upgrading until I can get a MOBO that has PCI-Express, Serial ATA and AGP 8x.

Although, as a note, I recall from what I read about PCI-Express that nVidia would like to see it used instead of AGP (Sorry I don't recall many more details but I believe it goes as fast, or faster than AGP).

    Check google :)

    valid point.

I think it would be wise for parents to use this service, no matter how flawed parts may be in conjunction with other software that limits what kids can and can't do. However the problem with that (as I quite lamely attempted to joke at in my message) is that quite often the kids are more savvy than the parents. I am in my late teens and second year computer science student and I recall when I was much younger, around 13 and I knew there was no way my parents would be able to use such software because I knew more than they did about the topic. Hopefully, assuming we don't get sickos running it, it will add that layer of protection that parents who don't understand computers can rely a little on.

However... how would you restrict such access without software the kids could screw around with?

Ha! Isn't always that kids understand technology before adults can - surely they only want to find out how to advance even faster from all the stuff these kids know :D I can see it now... as if technology wasn't fast enough now... five year old kids get tapped discussing how to build nano-fibres - just don't tell the olds cos this will really freak them :) Seriously though, just in case that is a bit off topic I would prefer my kids (assuming I had some) being watched over than have some sicko getting them!

  11. Should be better than dialup on Death of Decent Australian Broadband · · Score: 1

All this talk about how much is enough for the amount downloaded on DSL is obviously of some debate however in my view, if you are paying more for DSL you should get at least the amount you could get on a dialup before getting charged more. As a lowly dialup user I can get around 20Mb an hour, which is 480Mb (megabytes, not bits :) which is, assuming a 30 day month, a possible 14,400Mb I can download (or share amoungst others). Surely that would be the number that ISPs should allow as the cap.
