    All of you are forgetting something, very rarely these days are things done to help or save people. In todays world, if something is made, it's only because someone thinks they can make a lot of $ with it. Consequences are an afterthought.

    No, the people modifying food aren't saying "we don't care how many people our product kills, so long as we make a metric buttload of cash".

    What they're generally saying is "if we can find a way to produce more food, cheaper, we can make a metric buttload of cash"....

    However, that's not what he wrote. He correctly pointed out that the rounding error is much smaller than the error from the initial measurement. Logically it should be the dominant error that first leads to chaotic behavior.

    Alas, TFA is about a situation where they take the SAME inputs (initial measurements), run the program on ten different sets of hardware, and get ten different results.

    I fail to see how the same program + same inputs == "differences in inputs cause most of the error"....

    Everyone says that, but a basic fact of the universe says that it is vastly cheaper and easier to deliver unprocessed information than it is to deliver carefully filtered and processed information. In other words: by the time your well researched news is ready to be printed it is no longer news and it will have cost a lot of money to research and write.

    Which is why I don't pay for news anymore....

    Oddly enough, "men" (or the singular "man") is NEVER mentioned in the Bill of Rights.

    The phrase "the people" is mentioned quite a lot, of course.

    You (i guess U.S.A.) sent Japan U.S.A. marines - they want/need Japanese marines!

    If it's not obvious, GP is talking about the Marines that garrisoned Japan immediately post-WW2. The USA doesn't have six Marine Divisions anymore....

    If you remember, it was the Republicans in 2006 that passed a "reform" bill that forces the Post Office to put $5 billion a year into a pension fund to pay for pensions 75 years into the future.

    And it's Detroit that is about to start slashing pensions because they didn't bother to pay for them up front...

    One of my credit card companies is trying to force me to go paperless, so they're delaying the processing on the outgoing statement, putting a ridiculously short due date on it, and then applying late fees when my check doesn't show up in time.

    Have you considered just putting that credit card in a drawer and never using it? They might take the hint after a while.

    So, why do you think you need to actually empty your mailbox if it's three miles away?

    All I get are ads too. My bills are paid electronically (so I told them not to send me paper copies), anyone important to my life can get with my by email or cellphone.

    What comes in the mail generally doesn't make it past the garbage bin between the mailbox and the garage door....

    If my mailbox were to be moved that far (it wouldn't, probably just to the end of the street), I'd not even bother to check it unless I knew in advance there would be something I cared about in it....

    So, I take it your government does NO foreign intelligence whatsoever? If it does, it's applying *gasp* different rules to foreigners that to its own citizens.

    Replacing my government won't do much good as long as the USA remains an allied dysfunctional democracy.

    Consider seriously the idea of NOT staying a US ally if it bugs you.

    Trust me, if you want to get the US government's attention, wagging nicely whenever they pet you isn't the way to do it.

    Try dumping a few Treaties with the USA, and you'll suddenly get a lot more attention.

    Now you at least know how non-us-citizens feel when they talk to you guys, basically, "who cares if the NSA taps the whole world, as long as they don't tap us-citizens, suck it"...

    Since the NSA is in the spying business (signals analysis and such, not sneaking around spying), the fact that they spy is of no interest to me at all. It's their job.

    That said, we have this Constitution thing for a reason, and the NSA violating the Constitution IS if interest to me.

    In other words, the NSA spying on foreigners is their job. The NSA spying on ME needs a warrant and/or court order, which they don't have (don't get me started on Secret Courts..).

    If you're a foreigner being spied on by the NSA, take it up with your own government. If YOUR government won't protect you from OUR government, consider getting a new government.

    Let's see....

    According to Google, Antarctica is ~14 million square km, and has an average of about 1.6 km of ice on top of it.

    So, call it 22.4 million cubic km of ice. With a density of about 0.92 g/cm^3. So ~20.6 million cubic km of water tied up in that ice sheet.

    Surface area of the planet is ~510 milllion square km.

    Which gives us ~40 meters of sea level rise as a MINIMUM if the entire ice sheet melts.

    Of course, it's not all expected to melt, but hey....

    If the school system was doing a proper job and education was engaging and felt worthwhile then attendance would not be a problem.

    If there are enough 8-year olds in this country who could possibly find education more engaging than being outside on a Spring day (or being inside playing their favorite computer game), then your theory might work....
