Yes, if you're going to distribute MP3s, do it among friends, don't post them publicly. However, if the sites that were taken down were anything more than "My First Home Page(tm)" the students can contest it very easily. I know I've done it to a lesser degree in the past, but the point is, it's wrong and shouldn't happen. I know I won't do it again. I've thought about just what to do about the annoying Too Much Bass guy. I think that in cases where he's using a radio (for example, in a car) a focused, directed transmitter would suffice to deliver the LOUDEST possible audio pulse to his equipment. It's what I'D do, at least.:-)

Amen. Let's review my PCChips (or as they're known to me, "Houston Tech") motherboard history.
Computer 1: VX (Broken SIMM slots) VX Pro (BIOS died) VX Pro w/ onboard SoundPro chipset (Tweezer/modem transformer/chassis-related electrical accident... whoops) TX Pro w/ sound (sold it) TX Pro 2 w/ sound and video (sold it)
Computer 2: VX Pro w/ sound (doesn't seem to be broken yet...)
Computer 3: TX Pro 2 w/sound (seems all right)
Luckily, my workstation is currently a P2 350 on an Asus P2B-F, with a K6-2 400 & FIC VA-503+ as my Windows box.
As soon as I can, I'm tossing the two remaining PCChips boards. They are the absolute WORST motherboard company in the world. If you wanted to build the most horrible computer, you'd use a PCChips motherboard, a Cyrix CPU and a Connor hard drive. Oh, and an Atlas modem.:-) -- Chris Dunham http://www.tetrion.com/~chameleo/index.html
I disagree. There is no way for the "hacking community" to regain any sort of status in the eyes of the media. Playing the cypherpunk/technogeek thing up is the only way to make any use of the situation. Personally, I'd love the chance to go on MTV yelling "hack the planet!" and fingering accounts with image files renamed as.plan.:-) -- Chris Dunham http://www.tetrion.com/~chameleo/index.html

It's actually the patent on the file FORMAT, so yeah, it does stand. At least it would if they'd done something 5-10 years ago. Now, I don't see how they'd possibly be able to get anything for it.
I agree completely, but you're not entirely clear at the beginning of your post. Once again, for the residents of Kansas among us: Humans did not evolve from gorillas or chimpanzees. At one point, we have a common ancestor, but we are NOT directly decended from them.
Can I just interject here and ask that this not turn into yet another US vs. everyone else thread?
Besides, taxation of the internet is not something that is feasible in any way. That's already been proposed endless times by countless agencies. To assume that the UN would attempt to pull it off is silly.
...and to clarify: having the root servers under the control of a single country or company is a poor idea. Look what's happened so far. Placing it under the juristiction of an international, non-profit regulatory body (such as a UN-affiliated program) is the solution, but I can't see how anyone would voluntarily give up control.
