Whats the obsession with overloading old people with technology? How useful is a PDA/SmartPhone if you cannot read the screen? I'd wager that any 65 year old lady that truly needed a PDA or SmartPhone is probably innovative enough to be able to figure it out, regardless of which model or manufacturer you give her.

True enough. I should've said hand that Treo to any non-computer person and watch them fumble around. Hand them an iPhone and they'll be using 75% of it's functionality in about 10 minutes. And I'm not talking about "advanced functionality the iPhone will never have," I'm talking about basic call management, email, calendar, internet, etc.

The interface of the Treo is borderline terrible. Familiarity != intuitive. If you can hand your Treo to your 65 year old grandmother and she can figure it out without you walking her through each step, I'll eat my hat.

The fact that I never have to use a stylus or navigate an extremely poorly thought out menu bar at the top of the screen makes an iPhone so much less aggravating as a portable device.

I've used a Treo, and I'd rather keep my old Motorola V300 than use one of those daily.

And yes, we can happily use our phones to browse the web, send emails, listen to music, use 3G, and have done for years. We also send pictures, do video recording, run generic applications that are compatible across most phones, and don't have to retype manually if we want to copy some text. That's on cheapo phones, before you even get to smart phones. I've heard that phone technology isn't as good in the US - perhaps that's why I don't understand what all the Iphone hype is about.

We've had phones in the US that could do all that for years as well. Probably slightly different versions of the same models you have over there.

The difference is that using a previously available smart phones was an exercise in frustration. The iPhone is a pleasure to use, even if you are completely illiterate about technology.

That is a HUGE difference to Joe User. Feature lists do not make something pleasant or intuitive to use.

It has always seemed to me that what you get on day 1 is what you get for the life of the device, and if you want a new version of the OS software, you are required to buy a new device!

I had a Motorola phone with some ridiculous bugs in the OS, out of the box, and I had to deal with them the entire life of the device. I knew there were actually newer versions of the OS "in existance", but there sure as hell was no easy way to get them on my phone.

Easy, but not a good example. Halliburton, or more to the point, Kellogg, Brown & Root, is the only company in the US that can handle what needs to be done in Iraq. Ever wonder why no other company has sued the government over the Iraqi contracts? Because no one else can do the job. Sorry, try again.
Looks like the Republican talking heads got you on that one hook, line, and sinker! Have you ever researched this preposterous claim for yourself?

    And I quote:
"Despite claims in 2003 that Halliburton is the 'only company' that can handle the Pentagon's logistics work in Iraq, today's Post quotes a consultant for the company as saying, 'You're really asking too much of one firm to be able to manage all of this.' Other companies expected to bid for the contract later this year include Lockheed-Martin Corp. and Northrop-Grumman Corp."

Perhaps you haven't heard of Bunnatine Greenhouse?
"She testified before Congress that the contracts awarded to one of these subsidiaries, KBR, represented the "most blatant and improper contract abuse" that she had witnessed during her 20 year tenure working for the government."

The new LOGCAP 4 government contract is expected to have "robust competition" and be awarded to no less than three separate companies.

Seems pretty obvious after some simple research that KBR isn't the only company that can handle the job in Iraq.

They indeed are bastards with the late fees. However, on the few occasions that I was late paying, I've had luck calling the credit card company and asking if they could please refund the late fee. Of course, we're talking once or twice in three years... but if you aren't that organized, they will be happy to auto-deduct the minimum payment from your checking account so you don't get a late fee.
I accidentally missed a payment with a JP Morgan Chase credit card that I had for 7 years without a missed payment. When I noticed the problem, I paid it in full and asked them to refund the late fee (the total amount was up to $50, which includes the late fee and interest from the balance that was now considered past due), they said no.

I immediately canceled the account on that same call and began researching a new replacement card. So much for appreciating your customer base.

How about the fact you can't easily switch (and by "switch" I mean never visit mail.yahoo.com again) from your Yahoo account for free even if you wanted to?

With Gmail, you can forward your mail to an external address for life, for free. No lock-in! With Yahoo you get the annoyance of checking that original account "just in case" someone sent mail there instead of your new account, since you cannot forward from Yahoo without paying for it.

I'd recommend Gmail over anything else just for that reason, but throw in absolutely free POP3 and IMAP support and suddenly no other provider is even competing on the same level.
