  1. Some guy has some opinion about something Film @11 on Is Bill Gates the Cure For What Ails Microsoft? · · Score: 0

My favorite Slashdot articles take the form, some guy has some opinion about something. He wrote an article stating the opinion. This article contains no original research, or even any information that is not well known. This person does not have any special expertise on the subject at hand. Why do we care what he thinks? Because he is a marginally successful blogger with an opinion about something. That's why.

  4. My thought on Anti-Porn Facebook Page is Deleted, Then Restored · · Score: 1

My theory is that the page was taken down by mistake and the email claiming that is was was basically true. There is probably an algorthim that deletes based on complaints and the appearance of words like "porn." In any case, the page is back up. Nothing to see here, let's move on.

De-evolution doesn't have a meaning in the context of biology. But in common usage, it does mean change for the better. If I say he is a more evolved person, or this system has evolved since then, the context of more evolved being "better" than less evolved is clear. Besides, if de-evolution has no meaning, why did people understand what was meant?

  6. So an electron is not a sphere! on 10-Year Study Reveals Electron Shape · · Score: 1

This is incredible! Sure they might be almost spherical, but the shape is slightly off! This small difference could have profound theoretical implications. First it means that an electron has volume, second it means they might have an inner structure to create that shape. Very interesting indeed. Might lead to new physics.

  8. Re:Curious question on 10-Year Study Reveals Electron Shape · · Score: 1

Well they tested it's "shape" by seeing electrons have any wobble. They apparently found no wobble. Meaning that they are either little spheres, or IMHO more likely they have no wobble because they have no size. There are good reasons to think they fundamental indivisible particles already; because of the uncertainty principle the constituents of such a small particle would have to have a lot momentum.

Okay, Chrome 13 has a flag to hide the URL bar. They've clearly spent hours of work enabling this behavior. While this story is less interesting because the feature is trivial and not even active by default, it is still very interesting because it's about a Google product. So thank you for the info.

Like I said, the non-profit is just a tax status. People donate to the university mostly for the status of doing it. A university exists to make money for itself. (I know they are not-for-profit, but that's just a tax thing.) If it can charge more for one product than another, guess what? It doesn't exist to provide for the greater economic beniefit of society (or even to educate society, really). If you want for universities to exist for society, they should all be government run, and presumably free for every one. That would have the most positive impact on our society and economy.

It is almost incoherent. He is speaking very abstractly and wants to change the nature of communication in ways that are hard for humans to wrap their heads around.

He wants to change the structure of documents since they are limited by having a one dimensional flow with an occasional digression. He blames this limitation on paper and the lack of vision in players in the computer industry. But he is wrong, the limitation is in the nature of human thought. If you read some linguistic theory you come across ideas like universal grammar. That evolution has designed human with some sort of language acquisition engine and so people intuitively understand rules of language and grammar. So rules that are perhaps arbitrary, seem quite natural for people and easy to understand.

I think among these rules is that language is one dimensional. When you speak you may take advantage of one dimension - time. When you write you have two dimensions on a sheet of paper. This has been true for centuries. Did people start conveying information in two dimensions when it became possible? No. With some possible exceptions (like adding illustrations and footnotes), they just simulating one dimensional communication, because that was intuitively easy for them.
