    I don't know anything about GPT, but every linux distro I've used will happily install to a single partition. IMHO there's no very strong reason to have separate swap and boot partitions and so on.

    More tightly than what? The article says the US is as bad or worse. There are no large, well-secured networks. It has never been demonstrated that it is even remotely feasible to do such a thing. Day after day we see these articles about security issues, and eveybody saying, "how could this happen?" as if vulnerabilities were avoidable and abnormal, in the absence of any evidence that this is the case.

    Are you only counting people who passed comps/quals to get in initially? Because people certainly do fail those.

    Also, what you call "abandoning" the degree is often the same as a politician "stepping down to spend more time with their family" - it's because somebody took them aside and said, I think you need to move on. (Of course, some quit for other reasons).

    So, not to be a jerk, but where are you now? Tenure-track faculty member at a prestigious university? Running a successful startup company? Senator?

    IQ is supposed to predict future measurable accomplishments, not self-esteem.

    Wow, so IQ measures motivation and intelligence? It's an even more useful test than we thought!

    Granted this distinction may be useful, since the remedies (if any) for lack of motivation vs. lack "native intelligence" may be different - or maybe not. I suppose the assumption is that native intelligence is more genetically determined, whereas motivation is more determined by environment, but I find that questionable. Some people have exceptional drive and energy throughout life, even despite circumstances, and most of us don't.

    I also take issue with the article:

    Duckworth suggests that admissions to programs for "gifted and talented" children should not be based on IQ scores alone, but also on "who wants to do the work."

    Why? If IQ scores measure motivation as well as intelligence, then admissions based on IQ already do favor those who want to do the work.

    Yep, just last week all the news outlets were reporting that Sony and Microsoft aren't releasing next-gen consoles anytime soon. They seem to have an informal(?) truce between them, but they're creating a big opening for Nintendo.

    Marginally sharper pictures do not improve games.

    I'm getting tired of the meme that graphics are good enough and don't matter any more. My favorite game is Forza 3, and it would DEFINITELY be better at 1080p with a solid 60 fps (rather than the current un-aliased 720 with noticeable stuttering, and cardboard cutout pit crews). I cannot see how that could not be considered an improvement.

    For me it would be a bonus because it would mean the land is likely to remain relatively undeveloped instead of filling in with more suburbs.

    Economic warfare is far more effective. China won both the war in Iraq and Afganistan by buying up resources and snagging reconstruction contracts, and without spending any money or political capital on military force.

    Is your definition of "economic warfare" not just plain old capitalism?

    Again, the Bloggie *is* a moving camera (in addition to being stereoscopic). But, do you have a reference on solving for the scale of an scanned scanned via moving camera? It seems to me you have to start with some known distance measurement, somewhere.

    They Sony "3d Bloggie" does shoot video, not just two still images, so the iPhone has nothing over it. But since the Bloggie has a fixed focal length (no zoom) and a known distance between the stereo images, you could solve for the scale of the scanned object - something you cannot do with a single camera moving around.

    As for the parent (intentionally) having a point, I never said that.

    Although, with the right software, geometry reconstruction from stereo imagery would work a lot better than this iPhone app does.

    I think what you said is true, but simply amplifies the need for new approachews such as Berners-Lee is calling for.

    I don't like it when people say, "How dare you call me racist! Besides, racism is natural and normal!" Yes, it is natural and normal. That's why it's such a persistent problem throughout history, and why it takes energy to overcome. The same goes for every type of ignorance. All of us tend to be more comfortable with information that reinforces our opinions and self-image, but that's often opposed to being factually correct.

    I have seen no evidence that dd if=/dev/zero is not enough. Only apocryphal claims to the contrary.

    However, you can't verify just by looking that a disk has been entirely wiped, and drives are often discarded precisely because they don't work any more so they can't be wiped. Also, I think drives can re-map bad sectors so they are not visible to the OS and thus could not be wiped.

    A drill press works faster and is a lot cheaper.

    I would feel safer simply wiping the drive; punching a hole in it leaves most of the platter surface area intact.

    But I suppose there's always option C, "both."

    These giant boosters are for launching weapons. Including nukes with a global reach.

    What? Explain why a 130 ton payload would be useful for an ICBM. The most powerful US weapon ever weighed 10,500 lbs, and those were phased out because more numerous smaller warheads are more effective.

    These days we rely on nuclear subs. Every Trident missile can carry multiple warheads, and every sub can carry 24 missiles. 130 ton lifters they are not!

    The moon colony explanation makes more sense.

    If you want to advocate for higher taxes, start by going to that page, following the instructions, and sending the government a check. Then come back and talk to us about paying higher taxes.

    That's a completely illogical argument because individual actions cannot solve collective problems. Installing a catalytic converter on your own car won't improve the air you breathe in the slightest, whereas requiring everybody to do so (including yourself) causes a huge improvement. The two are not the same, so equating them doesn't work.
