Sure, overhead is great and a good idea, particularly if it's only a few hundred miles up. But for a satellite to stay in place it has to be parked 22,000 miles over the equator. That means it takes more power to talk to, but most importantly that space is in very high demand. Any lower and it doesn't stay put over the battlefield, it orbits at a different speed than the earth's rotation. So to be really useful for this type of use you need several in orbit so that you can always get to one.

Thanks for the lecture, but I know how HTML works. Obviously I'm not surprised by all of those fetches from Google as sites get ads from them or links to a video source when I load a page with embedded video. But I'm seeing this over and over again when I load pages that don't even have a visible reference to Facebook on them. Clearly they are getting sites to embed something that references Facebook, but the extra traffic it costs me seems to be for Facebook's benefit, not mine. Time to block it.

Heck, even if I was a Dish subscriber I wouldn't jump to this over NetFlix, and since I'm not a Dish subscriber I could care less about when they make it available to me.

OK, I might believe this if one is using a Plasma Display or an old CRT TV (and I stress the "might"). But with a modern LCD display the lighting pretty much stays on and the LCD liquid crystals are turned on and off. The power to make the screen update changes is minimal and certainly can't be detected at the meter, so the claim from the article "Light and dark passages in these films ...." is simply not going to be valid for a modern TV. And if you're watching on an old CRT TV we already know that you're watching old re-runs of "I Love Lucy", so what's the point?

  10. never give out your real e-mail address on When Does Signing Up Become 'Opting In?' · · Score: 1

Not associated with the site in any way except as a long time user, but I urge people to set up an account with spamgourmet.com. They will forward your e-mail to your real e-mail address. Not only can you create a unique address for everyone that you have to give an e-mail address to on the fly, but you can disable any of the addresses at any time and you can tell who is abusing your e-mail address. For example, I just checked with spamgourmet and I see that the last 3 pieces of junk mail they discarded were from suxjhb@wzju.com, suidvv@frkm.com and suundq@xcfk.com. More interestingly, the spam was all sent to an e-mail address that I created for and only gave to Equifax. So I know that they are responsible for it, they either sold my address outright or were sloppy about security and had it stolen by an employee or hacker.

I've even had close friends who's accounts were hacked and spammers tried to send out spam to all of their contacts. In such cases you will be glad to know that the person in Nigeria has the address of an account that you can easily disable without completely changing your e-mail account for all of your contacts.

And I should mention that I've never received junk mail from Spamgourmet and to my knowledge I've never had any problems with them revealing the address that they forward to. They even provide a nice mechanism that allows you to "reply" to email sent through them, and the response goes back to them and is sent from their domain, so you don't reveal your true address even if you reply.

My point isn't about "not offending trovingslosh", but rather about developers who set up feedback systems but can't be bothered to even give a courtesy response when sincere suggestions, even pleas, are made. If I had received even a simple "yea, we will add a choice to disable the "music" when we can get to it, I would have tried to wait it out, or at least checked occasionally to see if they got around to making the fix and I could go back to folding without the torture. I should mention that I did stick it out for over a month, maybe three, with less use and eventually just checking in to see if things were fixed, before I decided that what should have been a very simple UI change wasn't likely to happen. There were many other changes and updates in that time. So you see it as a waste of their time to bother to respond to the feedback system that they created. I see it as a waste of volunteer manpower to ignore the feedback that they solicited, and arrogance on the part of the developers to think that everyone should have to listen to the developer's own choice of "music" when freely giving their time to a scientific application that really had no good reason to insist on playing music in the first place. I doubt very much if I'm the only one that was offended and driven away, both by the sound and by the apathy of the developers for the input of the volunteer users contributing their time.

Thanks, you've helped me make up my mind. I wasn't thrilled about restarting and trying to work up in rank past a quarter million users, but I realize now that it isn't just that, it's having volunteered my time and work for a group that didn't have the common courtesy to respond to very valid feedback. I feel good now about deciding not to go back.

I tried anyway but it was right, so the computer is still on XP. And I'll be damned if I'm going to buy the fix for Vista for the same hardware that I already own a copy of Vista for So no 7 (or in the future 8) for this computer. It is on XP and will stay on XP.

Besides, I did mention that the folding program uses sound effects that are important feedback. I did try to run it muted, even though that would mean no IM alerts or other audio from other programs, but it impacted my folding too much. So I stopped folding..

  14. Have they fixed the awful music yet? on Gamers Piece Together Retrovirus Enzyme Structure · · Score: 3, Interesting

I "played" this for several months after it first came out. Was reasonably good, not one of the top players but often in the top 30 to 100. Stopped after they added an awful and intolerable music score to it, and gave no way to disable the music. Muting the entire computer wasn't a real option, both because other sound effects made by the "game" were important feedback and because muting would impact other things running on the same computer. Multiple requests to give an option to disable the music (or other alternatives like just removing it) were completely ignored without response. Knowing that if I listened to the "music" any longer I was likely to start killing people, I decided it was prudent to stop running the program. So my question is have they fixed the "music" yet and who decided it was important to force their music choice on all folders rather than just let us run our choice of music players and music on our computers if we wanted music.

The book by Albert E. is a good choice. Another approach is books by Martin Gardner, starting with Relativity Simply Explained and The Relativity Explosion (which I read years ago in high school as " Relativity for the Million ", the older title before it was revised). Your local library should be able to get them for you by inter-library exchange if they don't have copies. Or you might even be able to find good info right on the web. Start with Special Relativity, which is easy enough to understand even without a college education. From there General Relativity is almost trivial (it is just a matter of understanding that there is no point of reference that is "Special").

Of course, there is plenty of other math that goes well beyond simple relativity. Quantum mechanics will make General Relativity look like Sesame Street. But that's a different issue.

Doesn't matter. I have two laptops in front of me right now, both have touchpads, but I have wireless mice attached by USB to both. And I'm not even gaming on them, mice are just easier to use for many people. And when I play on-line games I always use a mouse.

Having a touchpad on the laptop is fine. But for $2800 I would demand that they should consider how the user will use it. At far less than $2800 I would have expected not only the touchpad but also built in Bluetooth to work with an (included) wireless mouse without wasting a USB port or having something that had to stick out of the side of the laptop. And so I would still have a configurable keyboard and touchpad system so that the user could position the touchpad on whichever side he felt suited him best.

Some gamers might try to use a right side touchpad. (Heck, a few even try to play FSP shooters with a joystick.). But most will want to use a mouse, and could benefit from a extra gaming pad on the left side (even if they don't actually look at the screen), much like the Logitech G-15 gaming keyboard or and of several other gaming input devices targeted for the left hand.
