    I tried installing YDL on my iMac & had trouble with the screen brightness. It would default to full brightness every time I booted YDL. Being software controlled, I couldn't find any utility for adjusting it down and I suspect that you may find the same problem.

    Is there any way round this now ?

    New York based Open Source Risk Management will announce it has studied the Linux "kernel" and discovered it infringes on about 283 issued patents. Twenty-seven of those patents are owned by Microsoft.

    Anyone know anything about this ?

    The governments make it as hard as possible for people to do this - the cost of a commercial license for hemp production is immense, along with all sorts of other conditions and bureaucratic complications that just make it a pain in the arse to do anything. The fields have to be in utterly inacessible places etc.

    Many years ago now, we had a job to do in Belfast, and after work we got very drunk in a pub. We left the car parked directly outside the pub and when we returned for it in the morning, the army had blown it up after someone had phoned in some car bomb threat. It later turned out that our insurance did not cover this sort of thing.

    Fortunately, it wasn't me that had to explain what had happened to the shiny new company car.

    1. Say you have lost/damaged your disc.

    2. Get free/cheap replacement.

    3. Sell replacement at car boot sale.

    4. Profit !!!

    They would never approve of such a scheme, as it would result in lots of genuine discs floating about

    As a chemist you have alreadly brainwashed yourself to ignore a lot of the problems with chemicals, just as most people who work in the nuclear industry can't see the problems even though they stare everyone in the face. An increased probability of my demise due to other people's pollution is a bad thing. Saying that we are more likely to die of something else is a poor attempt to pass the buck.

    Sony have been pushing MiniDisc as ( I shit you not ) a studio mastering format for years. I dare say that this would be their 'approved' system. Needless to say, it is not even close to being acceptable for this purpose.

    Most of BBC radio 1 uses Minidisc at the moment ( lots of audible fsck-ups live on air ) for some unknown reason - if anyone can tell me why, I would like to know.

    Do not buy Sony products. To do so would be like a turkey voting for Christmas ( or Thanksgiving for USA'ians )
