The language may be more simple, but that doesn't mean writing code in it is. I say that because you must write a lot libraries from scratch that would be readily available in a "more complex language".
Fedora Core isn't for newbies. Things break in it constantly. Which is what it's whole purpose is for. It's meant to testing out bleeding edge technology, not to use as a stable OS. I've never used Ubuntu, but it should have been close to what you were looking for. If you havn't given up on Linux yet, try out the Xandros' Open Circulation version. I have never had linux install so fast (~20 minutes) and be setup so perfectly before.
I like watching the trailors for other movies when I'm at the theater. In addition, the 20 minute trailor time (more like 10 minutes in the theater I go to), allows you to show up a bit late to the theater and still not miss your show.
I agree with your argument that Java hosts are limited. However, thought i'd mention that the cheapest java hosting package I found is $7.95 per month through ObjectNova.com
At the same time in Java you don't have such a wide selection of free tools ready to use in a web site, but you do have tons and tons of libraries ready to be integrated in your java web app, which PHP has but in much smaller quantity.
I found this line interesting. Maybe the usage of PHP on many sites isn't because its better. Maybe its because there is just more publicly available scripts that people can install. For instance, a guy I know who runs his gaming clans website wanted to show off the website he built to me. I was very impressed with it. Had a username/password message board type stuff and a streaming radio and an overall cool design. But upon further investigion, he didn't WRITE the website. He downloaded a CMS package, a skin for it, and added some content through the CMS interface of course. He didn't need to know how to write PHP. He didn't need to even know how to do HTML. As a developer, I just shake my head.
Don't get me wrong: It is possible to write good, secure, scalable code in PHP. It just isn't very common.
Many who work with PHP don't even know what good, secure, scalable code is. When you make a dumbed down product that any idiot can use, you get idiots who use it.
The Sun JVM is free (as in beer). So, I don't see what the big deal is about using it. It's a superior product that doesn't cost a dime. There are free (as in speech) JVM's out there, but why would OO/SUN want to promote those?
I installed new version last week, I'm sure the default install was easy, but I did the custom install so it wouldn't "take over" all the file formats, install system tray crap, and whatever else it does. I had to uncheck what felt like about 30 checkboxes to get minimal setup to play only real formats. It was more complex than it needed to be.
And for those who worship Real on Linux, it runs very choppy on my PC. Don't know why, its a decent PC. 2.6 ghz, 512 MB Ram. Other media players on there have no problems playing radio streams, but Real players is choppy. And Real players video on Linux is too choppy to watch. Runs fine on windows, but blows on Linux.
It IS only a game. It doesn't matter how many times I shoot/stab/rape/rob/screw/hang/punch/kick/smash/ea t somebody in a game, it doesn't make me more likely to do it in real life. Teenage boys were turning into criminals long before video games were around. Parents, neighbors, and friends all have a part in the moral values of these kids and can influence decisions, but when it comes down to it, the kid himself decides what kind of person he/she wants to be.
Java is under the Sun Community Source Licensing (SCSL)
Executive Summary
Community Source creates a community of widely available software source code just as does the Open Source model, but with two significant differences requested by our licensees, as follows:
* compatibility among deployed versions of the software is required and enforced through testing
* proprietary modifications and extensions including performance improvements are allowed
These important differences and other details make Community Source a powerful combination of the best of the proprietary licensing and the more contemporary open source technology licensing models.
Java source code is available. Ok, so you can't take the source code for java.. re-work it.. and release it again as a brand new programming language. (Although a certain company tried that once.. *cough*MICROSOFT*cough*) But you are welcome to tweak up the code and submit it for possible integration.
Java is riddled with platform- and VM-specific issues that pretty well kill the "write once, run anywhere" mantra. Qt generally ports pretty well.
Tell me.. How exactly is Java platform specific? I can take a java source file. Compile it on a Windows machine. Take that compiled class file, and run it on a Linux machine. it already is capable of handling different widgets, different file systems, etc. The reason being, of course, because it is not running on linux or windows...its running on a VM. Sure, you may have to deal with 1.5. code not running on a 1.2 VM..But thats like trying to compile source code with new QT calls using an old QT library.
QT(C++), on the other hand, runs natively. This means, of course, that it must be compiled seperately for each platform it is to run and not only that, the source might need to be updated to handle platform specific issues. (AKA "Porting") I am well aware QT applications are available on both KDE and Windows. So it is definately do-able. But saying its just as easy or even easier just makes me laugh. You have 1) different source and 2) a different executable.
For philosophical reasons, I only drink Free beer.
You're free to drink all the Free beer you want. In my world, beer costs $$$'s, so I'll have to write code in what ever language my employeer wants me to. In addition, until Madden 2006 will run on Linux, I'll have to keep my home machine a dual boot.
(Also, Sun is clinging to a failed business model and would be dead already if it didn't have so much cash in the bank. If it's board had any sense, they'd dissolve the company, sell off the assets, and return the money to investors. Their kool-aid sucks.)
I'd put my money on SUN staying around longer than Trolltech.
Only a small percentage of Java/C# libraries have Free implementations.
What are you talking about? You're free to use all of the standard java libraries without paying a dime. There are 3rd parties that sell libraries, but thats not limited to Java by any means.
Qt does multi-platform at least as well as Java. I think its the other way around
ROFLMAO! Good one!
Maybe it's just the masochistic desire to rewrite millions of lines of perfectly functional code?
re-writing code is #1 reason not to convert it over. But I wasn't answering that question.
What tangible benefits? No, really, I can't think of any tangible benefit that switching to either C# or Java would net.
Vast array of common libraries, multi-platform compilation, better API documentation, automatic garbage collection, more developers,... I'm sure theres more but I got to get back to work.
*cough*JAVA*cough*
And this is related to offering the news on the internet how?
Grandpa is protected at the bottom of the stairs. Grandpa is protected from the terrible secret of space.
A goatse link, Frist Post!, a microsoft reference and a google reference.

That movie is more than famous.. its infamous!
Tired of all the Java FUD.
Time travel by surfing the web? Yes! Read slashdot comments for just 60 minutes and you'll find yourself 1 hour in the future!

Which is why java hosts will often give you a discounted price for a "Shared Tomcat" package.

BOOBS!
If you pay for a Taurus, you won't get a Cadillac.
it installs fairly easily,

It's free for folks involved in open source projects. Wonder if they'd give you a key if you just said you're with Slashdot ;)
